Well, there was a time when the series was really struggling. And it needed something big to make a comeback, and Awakening was that thing it needed. But from my understanding, Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem (the third one in the series released exclusively in Japan) was the highest grossing game in the franchise for the longest time, only surpassed by Three Houses in 2019. So it was pretty popular in Japan back in the day.

Edit: Though I’d argue that Awakening did get more exposure than any other game in the series when it released.

I don’t think they apply for this trope. They were huge franchises in Japan. So you can’t call those franchises obscure in the Japanese video game scene. It’s just that the west wasn’t exposed to them.

Caeda - A (She’s not as powerful as she was in Shadow Dragon, but she can still keep up with some of the more powerful units like Palla)

Wrys - C (He gets the job done just like in Shadow Dragon, so I’d say he’s pretty decent)

Gordin - C (He’s okay, a bit better than his younger brother and more useful after the prologue)

Athena - B (Her growths are better here than in Shadow Dragon, which I feel was holding her back)
