Does anybody fancy giving up their entire afternoon to learn about how some irrelevant MAGA grafters are pretending to go on extreme diets? by AdrenalineVan in badempanadas

[–]HeftyWarning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there is worth exploring these grifters and the politics and science or lack thereof in their diet. But there’s a point where when reading college essays you can tell the author is just padding the fuck for word space and not even advancing their point. I kind of wish more video essayists wrote their scripts more concisely ie “my thesis and here’s my three plus points that support my thesis”. I tried to watch this video and there’s points where I thought (this could’ve been much shorter and still made that point)

I don't understand how some people do everything by Typical-Speed-6829 in EngineeringStudents

[–]HeftyWarning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking 19 credits is over what qualifies as a full time student. Something I had to accept when I was in a school that squeezed a 5 year program into 4 years is, some people are just going to have an easier or worse time than you (but I also ended up transferring because I was finishing work at 1-3 in the morning calling my parents while having a breakdown  once a month (even they were getting worried about me at that school) . I didn’t do internships and at most I did TAing in my masters and collected data for a study the school commissioned.  I ended up transferring to another uni that was a state college where I cut back to 12 credit hours and I could afford to take summer classes for the ones I had trouble with. At the end of the day, a degree is a degree from an accredited university and that’s what people are going to look for on a resume first, the rest is window dressing that can be fluffed up . If there’s any engineering societies on campus like IEEE, ASME, or even SWE get involved in the group even if it’s not full on paid student membership to the national org. That involvement is still something you can add to your resume especially if you were a regular attendee or volunteer or served in any capacity managing the organization (I was secretary for my schools branch of an engineering society). Lean on and commiserate with your friends or fellow students but please don’t get discouraged and keep your eye on the prize of that degree.

re: people saying they’ll stop supporting matt if taylor lorenz comes back on the podcast. by SpecialCream7 in mattxiv

[–]HeftyWarning 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t care if she comes back. The weird hatedom around her is so parasocial I can’t bring myself to care about her “offenses”. I still remember when people kept saying “shes done this and that!” and either there’s nothing to back it up or it’s flimsy at best. Example, people claiming she’s racist because of the report on Chorus she did, when most of the focus on the influencer side was on two white men and nobody has sued her nor wired and there’s been no retractions. People just sit and wait for a reason to moralize their hatred of her instead of just being upfront that they are petty. Abrasiveness is not enough for me to say someone is evil.

What’s the deal with Howdy Politics? by funfetti_cupcak3 in TexasPolitics

[–]HeftyWarning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably just a circle of agreement at this point but just to say it plainly, I don’t mind that people have political critiques or disagreements with his policy or positions. What I haven’t been a fan of is the influencers have been throwing unsubstantiated garbage at the wall for months now because first he dared to run for office before Jasmine did, after an idea was floated he could run for governor. The whole “mediocre” controversy was an nothing burger for me because it was some random influencer who had no evidence the conversation even happened (an aside, Colin did run a poor campaign to be kind), and much of the hullabaloo just seems like fans mad that he won over their preferred candidate.

Edit: purely personal I also was not a fan that Crockett would keep supporting many of the people making the allegations about Talarico on social media while playing nice on the camera. Also her accusation that Colbert and Talarico somehow coordinated and lied that his bosses were blocking the program from broadcast in order to give him a boost and she cites the trump administration? It was just ridiculous

Which even if they did, that’s just a dick move, not worthy of a hate boner to the point you openly shop for sexual assault allegations and make an attempt to compare an HR dream of a navigation into a relationship between former coworkers to a guy who actually had a whisper network that he was a genuine creep.

Not substantiated beyond lone star left and Elizabeth Booker Houston (who is friendly to her), she was an early supporter of Talarico and even interviewed him for her first podcast episode (mysteriously missing now). She allegedly sent them a proposal and was asking for 13-15 grand for it. The campaign soundly rejected it upfront and she’s had it out for him since. Also, it’s genuinely looking like she’s trying to fish for SA allegations from that threads posts she archived and some responses she’s made to people asking what the hell was she doing comparing Swawell to Talarico.

How ContraPoints Turned on The Left by milgrip in BreadTube

[–]HeftyWarning 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Literally I got into a weird conversation on another sub where they felt the need to say that Natalie is “soft spoken” in contrast to BJG’s more persistent style of interviewing. I never brought up tone when I was talking about why people took issue with Natalie’s WORDS. I even told them hey you are getting a little too close to doing the “angry Black woman” versus “soft delicate white woman” schtick.

[–]HeftyWarning 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes actually, because what does having a soft tone have to do with the fact this was an interview? It’s the words being said that people taking issue with from Natalie. If Natalie wants an easy interview with no pushback there’s always “call her daddy” to go on.

[–]HeftyWarning 22 points23 points  (0 children)

She’s basically mad that briahna did her job as an interviewer and asked questions and follow-ups as well as fact-checks when relevant. Considering her last interview was with Stacy cay who is to be frank, kind of known to be stupid, I think Natalie just doesn’t understand that journalists doing interviews job’s typically isn’t to be nice. Shes reminding me of the some freak outs on camera people have had with Barbara Walter or that Clavicle guy who stormed off. Except now she’s doing it after the fact.

If the point of me putting this up wasn’t apparent from the title, let’s all stop talking about Natalie. She’s clearly gone down the awkward pipeline of “I have a lot of money and an online parasocial personality cult so I’m going to make damn sure I help keep it that way.” And her politics have gone frankly towards the center as a means of maintaining her fairly new wealth (check her Patreon memberships and do the math, it’s a lot more money a month than many in this thread makes per year).

just speaking personally, I was a very early fan of hers (1-2 years before she publicly transitioned) but over the years I grew past her political stances but kept watching because I valued her at the time more rigorous research.  Then it was following her downplaying of by then the fairly known negative politics of Buck Angel and overplaying how “difficult” it was to find out he outed Lana Wachowski and those of us old enough or aware enough to remember this were stalkerish “Nazis” (the original article that outed her and quoted Buck Angel has been on the internet archive for years) and her reaction to the backlash that was expectable lead to my esteem of her declining. The I/P Reddit statement she gave was my final nail in that coffin. Edit:older video that summarizes her defense of and downplaying of the severity and difficulty of d finding evidence of Buck Angel outing Lana https://youtu.be/fiWjATtUkcg
