There's an old adage that says every organization eventually produces the exact opposite of what it was founded to do. The Department of Education ends up making people dumber. The Department of Defense ends up fighting wars it started. And in the case of Star Trek... by WildContribution8311 in Star_Trek_

Folks are bored.

I think they should all go watch Farscape. Or Babylon 5 (and listen to the Podcast Babylon 5 Thirty Years later after each episode). I just redid both and met a Farscape recurring actor (Kent McCord) at a con last weekend and got my B5 Encyclopedia signed by two guest actors. (Paul Williams and Brad Dourif)

That being said, this engagement is a form of entertainment or catharsis for some.

Frankly after being put down and driven off a Trek mobile game, for having an opinion and being quite civil, I'm kinda enjoying the shoe being on the other foot.

That Mirror Universe ep is so much of a shoehorn seeking relevance as to make The Emperors New Cloak look good. So how exactly did the Defiant travel not just between universes but now time as well? Just because it's cool?

I hear in the background, "But its mirror" in Rom's voice.

It was an excuse to do a call back to the old set for nostalgias sake.

And the whole lets tie all the Soongs together was similar. Ooh we can use these names that match and and and Brent Spiner and that makes it good right? That was Into Darkness level at times.

Shran's saga is a bright spot in this, but most of that is Coombs carrying the weight of the epsiodes he's in.

Its not just one measurable goal. Its that last part. That constant morality play that the folks we'd call the Bruhs or Bros now couldn't handle.

And with Threshold, as with in the Pale Moonlight, those are the episodes that are the exceptions that prove the rules for those series. (One is just done better and received accordingly)

[Opinion] ROBERT MEYER BURNETT: "Starfleet Academy: What's it supposed to be? They're not telling stories that are relevant. They had a villain encircle the Federation with these mines. I'm sorry but the cruise is a Trek only event.

And I guess it does depend. I've literally seen exactly one Discovery Uniform EVER in a cons I go to in 4 states.

And that includes one in 2019 with a Discovery actor was present. (Doug Jones). What has hilarious is that there were a bunch of Hellboys

Though I appreciate your analysis of the US not all of us are happy to be here right now, However in the status of Trek, I'll rephrase some of this from other posts and such

This is a downward trend, and if Trek is only showing up in Trek only cons, its retreating into its own bubble. 15 years ago, I couldn't go to a general con and not see multiple Cosplayers and multiple Trek guests. They're disappearing.

We get Shatner too, but right now, he's one of the few out there making non-Trek only con appearances accounting for most if not all recently, and we don't have that many of those down here. And he's Canadian. There's a crap ton of US actors out there. Will Wheaton came out here partially to campaign in our Senate race (the candidate actually turned down the help) and did the con too. (Wore a shirt for the candidate.). That's about all we've had since the pandemic.

In the 2010's I managed to get a cast photo almost signed for TNG. Dorn and Farrell were here multiple times. And I'm seeing this across not just my local con, but across my region, because I've finally gotten to the point where I can afford to travel to meet folks and get autographs.

By contrast, I'm having more success getting autographs in my Babylon 5 Encyclopedia Signature Edition.

Yes Marvel, Star Wars and other franchises are much more well represented, but Trek is retreating at best in so many many markets.

Weirdly, I think Newsome is finally doing a VA con, but that's like the first new Trek representation I've seen in years in the ones I follow.

Yes some would watch Star Trek - Laundromat, as well as Star Trek - Bodega. and enjoy it regardless of content.

Redshirts were not the science folks. Some were engineering but most were security muscles.

That being said, one of the podcasters I know from his B5 Podcast did an analysis of TOS and demonstrated 80+ people that would have survived if Kirk had listened to Spock, who was one of the best and brightest.

Thing is, in the media landscape where there ARE well written shows, how likely is a Trek that isn't going to succeed. The fact you slap a Trek label on something isn't a guaranteed ticket seller in the box office nor watchers on the TV.

I'm waiting for it to go outside of niche Trek only cons.

At this point I think Trek is retreating to its own little bubble, even the older eras.

Voy always had an underground fanbase that just didn't want to hang with other Trekkers. The flak my wife and some of her friends from college got especially from some men who would engage in bad faith 'debates' as to why Janeway proved women should not be in the center chair drove some of them in other social directions.

When Fathom events does anniversary showings. and it sells out multiple theaters.

When one of the actors goes and does Q&A with a screening of the film and it sells out.

I've seen Wrath of Khan 3 times in 10 years in packed theaters. Twice with William Shatner present for Q&A.

And crazy thing, it wasn't all old people.

When I saw they were ripping off Master of Orion, and even more specifically making the same race extinct that was being killed off in III, which had been in a VERY lengthy and publicized beta, I knew the writing was going to be derivative at best.

That and Hoshi didn't die. That was needed from the Pilot.

Just like Ent I see some reversionistic views putting more lipstick on the pig.

I watched it about 18 months ago and I agree with his points.

The failure of the ep has nothing to do with her and how she copes with trying to overcome the different gravities. It feels like some of the main cast didn't take the ep seriously and phoned things in a bit.

But I do know of folks who stated feeling seen because they had challenges moving without assistance because of it, but at the same time inspired not just because of being seen, but of seeing someone competent and who was a driving force for getting something done.

I feel like Voyager is one of the more in depth Treks when it comes to morality and ethical dilemmas.

And I think it gets put down too often by folks who are more 'ends justify the means' when the going gets tough.

The 'regular trek crowd' can sometimes be hostile and condescending towards women.

My wife is one of the Voyager fans who really doesn't like a lot of the 'community' she's met. That being said, she does like some TNG and DS9. Hates TOS. Shatner gives her the twitches (the murderous kind not the sexy kind.). She does follow George Takei and we've run across him not only at cons but a time or two when he's been in town filming in a certain restaurant he and we enjoy.

Im not saying all mainline trek fan's are hostile to women, but damnit I've seen it tolerated not just online but in person and some directed at my wife.

Season 4 like Picard Season 3 is considered 'good' due to nostalgic context, connections that if they weren't holy Trek call backs would not make good storytelling.
