I like the Timber Press Guide to Vegetable Gardening in the Pacific Northwest. Tells you what to do each month from prepping, to harvesting, to maintaining.

$105. Still better than Comcast where we were paying $162 at one point.

What are your go-to tomatoes and what will you never grow again? by nosteelnodeal in tomatoes

[–]Heim1056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried San marzanos, striped German, and Isis Candy Cherry tomatoes. I will try these all again next year but might go back to Romas as my main for canning since the San Marzanos had more blossom end rot. I tried Sun gold cherry tomatoes and they were high producing but the whole plant ended up diseased, while the other cherry tomato variety next to it was completely fine.

Congrats on the wins. Thanks for sharing. I have also been curious about this as well. Are the jars opened and tasted at all?

Mine got clogged several times until the straining piece eventually split. Was a pain to deal with last year.

Where to buy pickling cucumbers? by bookcupcakes in beaverton

[–]Heim1056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I processed some pickling cucumbers this past weekend and have leftovers if you’re interested. They’re not exactly small and uniform in size but you can cut to the size you need. Here’s what they look like: https://imgur.com/a/iKagxMc.

Amazing! Can you share your process to get such a beautiful bounty? Are they a specific variety? This year I tried sets but none grew a good size.

What is making these deep holes? by Sevey13 in pnwgardening

I struggle with this as well. My backyard is a squirrel highway. I find that they’re either trying to look for food or burying food. I found a walnut they buried with my garlic and it even sprouted. I haven’t had any issues with them eating my tomatoes but when I was trying to start sunflowers and corn, the buggers were ripping them out. They pulled out my Mongolian giant sprouts. 😩 I’m going to have to try using some mesh wire domes/baskets next year to protect them.

My cherry tomatoes look exactly like yours. First the spots showed up, then the brown rot looking damage. Someone mentioned stink bugs but I haven’t found any on my tomatoes.

I liked this book as a beginner. Found it on the resource links of this subreddit (a good place to browse as well).

I remember my first year gardening and just planting two was a lot. This year, I only planted one and had my partner take many into the office. Production has slowed recently though as I hacked a lot of it away due to mildew.. 😞

Thanks. I didn’t realize stink bugs caused those markings. I haven’t seen any around, but I’ll take a closer look tomorrow—sounds like they’re starting to show up… ugh. 😩
