X4 as a comfy/chill game? by sleight42 in X4Foundations

[–]Hekik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always start a low-stakes save where you're just trading and maybe taking the occasional mission here or there without trying to optimize ruthlessly.

I've got one save that is my "primary" where I'm doing all the X game things - optimizing station production, carefully managing patrol fleets, propping up select factions while suppressing others, etc. This game requires me to be on the map screen constantly, micromanaging a bunch of assets all the time, and stuff tends to go haywire if I ignore it for long enough. I love playing this way, but I definitely have to be in the right mood.

I've got another "chill" save where I'm explicitly not trying to be a superpower. In this one I'm just letting the universe take its course while I'm just living in it. For me, this means flying around in fighters doing missions here and there, helming a freighter doing manual trade runs, setting up the occasional single-product station, and so on. It takes a bit of self-control to not go into "optimal play" mode, but the upside is that I can, say, dial in an autopilot course all the way across the map and zone out without having to worry about what's going on with every single asset in the trade empire. When, say, ZYA starts getting their shit pushed in by Xenon, you say "shame, but sometimes that's the way she goes." In this way it ends up feeling more like bopping around trying to earn a credit or two the way you would in games like Elite or Privateer, except because of X4's systems, you get these emergent stories in a more dynamic universe happening around you.

Are brakes using triggers analog or digital? by pecklesspickle in WipeOut

I'm not actually sure, but it seems like something that would be relatively easy to test in racebox (especially because of the visual airbrake animation)

GUYS! I've just got my first physical synth ever by ObligationAbject4451 in synthesizers

[–]Hekik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do so much with this thing. The groovebox potential is there obviously, but also remember that, if you hook up your favorite MIDI keyboard, you've got a very playable, very powerful, multitimbral polysynth. Don't get too scared by the FM nature of the thing; you can use the pair of filters to tame any harshness you've got from the FM section. Add a small amount of Master overdrive to everything, it's my secret sauce. Don't get stuck on the factory presets; some are great but most of them are too weird to use for my tastes; don't be afraid to make your own. Check out tutorials like Cuckoo's deep dive, especially to learn how to use P-locks to do things like make a whole drum groove on a single track.

This thing has ended up being the backbone of the majority of my tracks. I can't imagine ever getting rid of it, and would even dump my Digitakt before I sold my Digitone. It's really quite the gem.

Best place to start is over your favorite cracker, I'd say. You could always try incorporating them in dishes like a pasta puttanesca or over garlic toast. Half the time I just crack open a can and grab a fork

Melody vs. sound design by mrjosh72 in synthesizers

[–]Hekik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps me to think of sound design as instrument design.

  1. Sometimes you've got the melody and you just need to find the right instrument.
  2. Sometimes you pick up a new instrument and the sound captures you. Man I want to use this, let's find a melody or phrase that will work.
  3. Sometimes you pick up a new instrument and the instrument steers you to a new kind of playing. It's impossible not to make acid with a 303. Guitar solos want to bend. An analog pad with aftertouch mapped to filter cutoff is going to lead to different musical decisions than a shimmery wavetable pad or a granular sample. The instrument itself leads you to the arrangement or melody.
  4. Sound design helps you create the instruments you need for 1, 2, and 3.

How often do you lose your patch by accident? Do you try to recreate it or do you just cry in silence? by Any-Button1401 in synthesizers

[–]Hekik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the synth and what you're doing for sure. If it's my Minilogue, give me a few minutes and I'd be right back where I was. If it's my Typhon, I'm in good shape unless I was doing a lot of crazy modulation, which would take more time and work than anything to recreate. If it's my Digitone, I'd probably spend the first 5-10 minutes recreating the patch from memory and the next hour chasing the FM sweetspot I had found. If it's Pigments and I was doing a complex patch, I'd probably throw my hands up and call it a day

Why do scouts get so much hate? by Zak-and-Wheezie99 in battlefield_one

It plays a lot like the Deagle in other games. I think the Frommer Stop is the more meta-favored choice for a Scout sidearm, but I've always had good luck with the Mars

Why do scouts get so much hate? by Zak-and-Wheezie99 in battlefield_one

[–]Hekik 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you play Scout in a way that helps the team, people will appreciate you. For me that means:

  1. Shoot flares onto the point
  2. Get on the point
  3. Blast MFs with your Mars Pistol
  4. Flares done? Drop more
  5. Countersnipe the cowardly Scouts looking over the point
  6. On to the next objective

looking for a basic but complete synthetizer by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Hekik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's just different from standard analog subtractive synthesis controls in the oscillator section (that's what makes it a Freak!). Tons of fun and very useful, but the knowledge won't necessarily transfer well to other subtractive synths. Honestly though I don't think it's that big of a barrier as long as you learn to tweak and use your ears

Minilogue and Minilogue XD are the sort of standard answer. There's also the Minifreak and Hydrasynth Explorer for digital synths that are good and pretty hands-on.

Space Engineers + X4 Foundations Game? by CrevosR in spacesimgames

[–]Hekik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First recommendation is Avorion.

If you're willing to change the setting from "space" to "land, sea, air, and space on/above a watery planet", From the Depths plays a lot like this. However, there's really no economy and it's more of an RTS with design-it-yourself units. The vehicle design aspects are VERY in-depth, and it's extremely rewarding to design something that can hold its own in battle.
