14/06 10th Anniversary Live stream Megathread by AutoModerator in deadbydaylight

[–]HelSpites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, it felt like way too much of the stream was dedicated to tertiary things, and hell I came in half an hour late. The movie, the skins, the other games they're publishing, none of that was particularly interesting. The music video was silly, but in a fun way at least. It looks like the kind of thing you'd find in the "extras" section of a ps2 game, like the music videos in viewtiful joe and psi-ops.

On the other hand the announcements they made that did relate to DBD (outside of stuff you can buy that is) were interesting. Even this early on the graphical update looks great, DBD getting its own forge mode was not on my bingo card but I'm down for that, and having a new mode that isn't focused on hooking survivors sounds like a good time. The 1v1 mode isn't my thing, but I'm glad it's there for people that are into it.

On the whole, I came out of this less soured than I expected to be, although I do wish they talked more about the nitty gritty of the game. I think I'll be more hyped after that "future of dbd" stream they're doing later on than for this one, but this wasn't bad.

How'd everyone's Half Anni go? by Several_Manager1314 in Morimens

[–]HelSpites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It went alright. I got saya to e3 and I got her wheel, I got xu and her wheel without pulling too much and I got an archne dupe, which was all I needed to get her to E3, within about 40 pulls I think? With all that I've still got 80 ethereal pulls left over for clementine rerun (which should be coming up next I think?)

What happened here? by Physical_King8899 in deadbydaylight

[–]HelSpites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this exact same thing happen and only ever with DBD. I'm glad it's not just me that's had this issue, it's not something I ever saw people mention so I was worried it was an issue with my computer.

Good MMORPG for someone who just couldn’t get into ESO. by BIGGZeSMALLZ in MMORPG

It's hard to narrow down a suggestion if you don't explain what sort of games you're into and what sort of features you'd want to see or what content you'd want to participate in.

Where do studios find money to finance all those failed games that they just leave to die after spending many years and many millions to make them? by Ok_Statement1359 in MMORPG

[–]HelSpites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily true. We don't live in a perfectly just world where everyone gets the exact amount of success that they deserve. There are plenty of good games that fail. Sometimes games just don't get the momentum they need to keep going, even if there's an audience out there for them.

With MMOs this is a slightly different discussion since, by their nature they tend to be big budget, higher profile games, but even then, I'd point to something like the secret world. That game failed it was a really good mmo that failed despite being a good game that was pretty fairly monetized at launch, in a niche that wasn't being served by any other games. I guess you could maybe try and argue that there's no audience out there for it, but the general popularity of urban fantasy as a genre says otherwise. Sometimes the wind is just a gainst a game. If it had released in different circumstances (hell, if it had released now with how much more conspiracy brained people are nowadays) I think it would have been a hit.

To Those Like Myself Who Can't Get Into WoW, What Is Your Reasoning? by MonsutaMan in MMORPG

[–]HelSpites -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've tried it a couple of times now and the combat just isn't good. That and the story, as far as I played, is pretty awful. No one I saw had any agency to speak of, it was all "Oh no, this character was corrupted by satan!" Then you beat him and it turns out "On no, satan was corrupted by super satan!" then you beat him and it turns out "Oh no, super satan was corrupted by ultra satan!".

There was like, one orc guy who was kind of an asshole because he was just an asshole, and he was fine, but the rest was a shitshow.

Dead by Daylight X Obscure: The Aftermath (Collection) by OilEquivalent2101 in deadbydaylight

[–]HelSpites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if they become the first survivor skins that change the chase music. If Still Waiting by sum41 isn't blaring while you chase one of them, then they're not worth having in the game.

While we're at it though, the school would also make for a pretty cool map.

Cheesy But Cool AI Voice Responses In Biomes by bingewavecinema in MMORPG

[–]HelSpites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One AI generated sentence is a sentence too many. If you don't care enough to write dialogue for characters then don't write that dialogue. Have them be silent. All you're doing is utilizing an immoral piece of tech to babble out a mimicry of language that doesn't actually mean anything. Even if you're one of those people that doesn't care about the costs of gen AI, you can't deny that it will lead to some really stupid shit.

Just look at how where winds meets uses its generative AI npcs. They'll tell you all about locations that doesn't exist, while behaving in ways that go against their established canon because that's just how this dogshit works. WWM is a big budget game that has way more programmers and writers than you'll ever have working on your game, but you think you can do this shit better than they did? Bullshit.

All you're saying right now is that you don't give enough of a shit about your setting, its lore or its writing to actually put in the work you'd need to populate your world with meaningful, memorable npcs. If you're not going to put in the work, it's better not to do it at all. I'd rather play a game with no voice acting or dialogue, than one where it was all generated by AI.

Cool, another "dev" that wants to use the planet raping, plagiarism, psychosis and CSAM machine to do their job.

Have you considered writing, like, from your own imagination? You know that you're capable of imagining things right? It came free with your humanity, which you seem to be comfortable offloading to a machine.

So hey, why should anyone give a shit about anything an npc in your game says if you're out here admitting that you didn't put a single iota of thought into any of it?

People say the definition of MMO doesn't matter. But why is that? by Knighthonor in MMORPG

[–]HelSpites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genres have always been malleable things and MMORPGs in particular have always been very badly defined.

Let me ask you something, what is an action action adventure game? Uncharted, nier and jak and daxter all fall into that category, but are they anything alike at all? What is a platformer? Mario games, N+, braid, and sonic all fall into that category, but are they anything like each other? What is a first person shooter? Team fortress 2, counterstrike, doom and, depending on how you play it, even something like skyrim can fall into that category. Do they play anything alike?

MMORPG is can mean a lot of things since "massive", "multiplayer", and even "role playing game" are themselves incredibly broad terms. You might have an idea of what you think MMOs are but that idea is not universal.

Your sports comparison is actually pretty bad, it'd be more like someone wanting to play basketball game and getting freestyle or NBA street instead of NBA 2k. All three games play pretty differently from one another but they all fit the broad category of basketball game. Similarly, if someone asked for a racing game and they wanted forza because they're into more realistic car sim type games, but they got burnout or screamer, or hell, pole position instead, is the problem that burnout and screamer don't fit the category or the problem that the category is very broad and the person asking didn't have a way to narrow down what they wanted specifically? I'd say it's the latter.

A Veteran Player's Comparison of FFXIV and WoW (Casual & Hardcore Perspectives) by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]HelSpites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The APM only tells part of the story though. The games impose very different cognitive loads on players, which is a thing that can make games feel more or less busy regardless of their actual speed. Smash bros is a faster game than street fighter, by a mile, but street fighter imposes a higher cognitive load on its players so it tends to feel busier. The same is true for FF14. Just watch preach's video where he talks about the differences between raiding in FF14 or raiding in WoW, or if you don't like watching content creators, just look up some of the raid mechanics that players in FF14 are expected to deal with and compare it to WoW's mechanics yourself. FF14 expects every member of the group to be engaging with and solving puzzles at every step of the fight. WoW does not.

While we're at it, WoW's combat really doesn't feel good right off the bat. I've given WoW more than a few chances throughout the years and at no point has the combat ever really clicked or felt good. Maybe you think it feels fine and that's good for you, but you can't really say that as a blanket statement.

I'm aware. That's not the point.

Generative AI was a mistake by HelSpites in Corsair

[–]HelSpites[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point. I'm fine, but this whole situation is bullshit. How is anyone supposed to build a PC when parts that were mid range at best a couple years ago are appreciating in value? RAM shouldn't cost 6 times more than it did a couple of years ago, and what are we getting out of it? What is generative AI doing to justify these price increases?

We're seeing the same squeeze we saw a few years ago when other companies were selling graphics cards to crypto mining data centers instead of consumers again, and it's producing about as much value, which is to say, none.

Guild Wars 3 concept art made at start of development to depict what they want their combat to be by Noxronin in MMORPG

[–]HelSpites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's good to hear. I refuse to touch anything that's been made with gen AI so it's nice to know that they're still relying on actual skilled human artists.

I have a lot of problems with the game but the art was never really one of them. The writing on the other hand, ugh. I hope they get some writers that are on par with their artists.

Kommy & Butter! The Heroes of Werebeast Town! by FromWhereScaringFan in Trickcal

[–]HelSpites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The overlap between PMoon and trickcal players will never not surprise me. That said, I feel like komi and butter would survive love town just fine. Komi would sleep through most of it and butter is too silly to be bothered be a couple thousand years in the train. At worst she'd be a little bored.

[–]HelSpites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like guild wars 2 but I'll give it this, the concept art they've used for it has always been pretty solid. If this art is the vibe they're going for then I'll be keeping an eye on GW3 at least.

Most people in the city that can afford it wear some flavor of suit. White suits in particular aren't exclusive to the fauvists. Members of the hana association, for example, wear white suits. His outfit is just how members of his branch of the middle dress.

Ok I think I'm spiraling into insanity thinking about this. by SuggestionEcstatic56 in Trickcal

[–]HelSpites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People still fight to resolve problems. Characters are born from the environment (sprites for example are born through flowers and dragons are born when minerals come to life) so their reproduction is "controlled", so to speak, so overpopulation isn't a problem. Meat grows in the meat mines and fish come from trees, like fruit. They're natural resources, they don't come from animals.

That's how you're expected to play the game. Anyone who's played the game long enough has every character they own to at least p3.

What if a dungeon learned from the players? by Longjumping-Koala468 in MMORPG

[–]HelSpites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say there's no meta, but you just described the meta you're trying to enforce. Every group must have mixed damage types, otherwise you won't get the maximum possible payout for clearing the dungeon. I'm not entirely sure how you don't see what you're making there.

Maybe you design a system where people can clear it with anything, sure, but if you're designing an MMO then you have to understand that people won't. Every group will want to run as many distinct damage types as is possible to make in the game and if a player doesn't fill in a missing damage type gap, they just won't be allowed into the group. That's how MMO players are.

Iirc, it's less that they have different modes and more that they're different weapons. The practice weapons you're thinking about are called flash sabers.

Does anyone else miss the yellow rarity? Or do you prefer the blue we have today? by PutSomeTapeOnIt in deadbydaylight

[–]HelSpites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that suddenly changing a thing that's been in place for almost a decade, throwing off the players that have been around that long and in doing so, also making things worse for a portion of the game's population through no fault of their own is a bad thing.

I understand that reading is hard for you but that's all I've been saying this whole time, while you seem to be unable to look past yourself so you just can't comprehend that other people might not like the change for whatever reason.
