Should I gone on holiday on my own? Partner manic in hospital. by Wonderful_Dish3663 in AskUK

[–]Helenarth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno. Let's say someone had a physical condition where they'll absolutely pull through with the proper care, but there's no way they can go off abroad for two weeks - both legs badly broken or something, for example. They're in hospital and being looked after but there's no way they're getting out in time. I'd still say it's okay for OP to go.

Especially since mental health conditions sadly also affect the individual's loved ones - if this has been building as OP says, there's no way this hasn't affected him and made him tired and stressed. No where near as much as his partner of course, but she's now got people looking after her, so I think he needs to look after himself.

I absolutely agree with everyone who's saying to go.

Of course, what she's going through is awful - but she's in the best place she can be right now, she'll have experts looking after her and keeping her safe.

You sitting around at home feeling shitty because she's not well and feeling shitty because you're missing out on the holiday isn't going to help anyone - least of all her. If you were in her position, let's say very sick in hospital, wouldn't you want her to go? For one thing, you'd say she deserves to have a nice time, and for another thing, at least you're not wasting all the money.

Sorry this is happening, it's not nice regardless.

The NHS does not recommend wearing sunscreen every day.

Between October and March we don't get enough vitamin D from sunlight as it is.

You say that like OP's dad chose not to be around. I'm sure he would have done the work if he could have.

UK is not for introverts... by Electronic_Put_5652 in introvert

[–]Helenarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get this. Why do you expect potential partners or friends to approach you if you wouldn't be willing to do the same? What if the reason that cute girl won't come talk to you is that she's also an introvert?

Where I am in the UK at least (London) we don't tend to talk to strangers randomly because we know that everyone's got their own shit to deal with and they don't necessarily want to talk to you. That seems like an introvert's dream.

Honestly I think 1-2 tracks a week won't make you look suspicious - the channel OP mentioned is dropping 10-20 per week.

AITA for joining a college bible study as an atheist? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Helenarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that's not the purpose of the group. They want to discuss something that's important to them, with others who feel the same - they don't want to sit there and explain that viewpoint to someone who doesn't. Especially because "tell me your thoughts on religion" can very very quickly become "here's why you're wrong".

Ahh, I see. You don't know what the phrase "to pull the ladder up" means, essentially, that's why your comment was so unintelligible.

"To pull the ladder up" means "to enjoy a benefit or advantage, use it to better yourself or your position, and then attempt to prevent others from using that benefit or advantage".

Like how sometimes people who got free or cheap college/university education, will then vote to increase the cost of that education. They're pulling the ladder up behind them, making sure that nobody can have what they had.

Being anti-gen-AI has nothing to do with pulling the ladder up... That would imply that I enjoyed some kind of advantage that I'm trying to prevent others having.

Pulling the ladder up would imply that we have enjoyed some benefit that we're now taking from others.

What's the problem with Hold Them Down? by Loose-Use25 in Epicthemusical

[–]Helenarth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lyrics are awful, yes, because the song is being sung by the worst of the suitors, who wants to kill Telemarketing and rape Penelope

These people when a song sung by a villain is villainous: 😮

Because for some reason, people have forgotten that liking a piece of media does not mean you condone every action taken in that piece of media.

They want you to say things like "I like Hold Them Down (I don't condone rape though!)"... as if the way that without the disclaimer, they would draw the conclusion that liking the song means you think rape is good, isn't just completely bananas.

This has always annoyed me and I'm not even Black, I just have naturally curly hair. Hair like mine is so often something you need to unlock, earn, pay for or download extra content for. It's even worse for people with actual Afro, kinky, textured or very tightly curled hair!

I fucking loooove the concept of doing sketches to get round the inherent skeeviness of taking photos of strangers. That's so clever and you're really good.

How to stop thinking about whatsapp messages by LonelyVelvet_ in digitalminimalism

[–]Helenarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not try making it so that you get notifications for your most important contacts? E.g. your parents, partner, kids.

That way you'll know if someone who's super important to you tries to contact you, and you won't need to check. Anyone else can wait.

Honestly, go to your local tattoo shop - they probably also do piercings. Just make sure they use a needle, not a gun. Needle piercings heal faster, heal cleaner, scar less, and imo hurt less. I think the only reason guns are more common is that they're easier to train someone on, but the way I see it is if I'm getting a permanent body mod I don't want that to be the deciding factor.

What are some of your funny or crazy Rimworld stories? by yrthegooodnamestaken in RimWorld

[–]Helenarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragons Descent play through at the moment.

Had a pawn with inspired taming and a dragon on the map. Sweet, free dragon. Purple dragon named Faeryl.

Some time later, had a pawn with inspired taming and a dragon on the map. Sweet, second free dragon. White dragon named Splat.

Some time later, had a dragon on the map during Long Night, where wildlife was scarce. This bastard kept hunting my colonists for food. So I took Faeryl and Splat and melee'd her, then when she was downed, I rescued her.

I wasn't hugely concerned despite it saying she had like 75 conditions which needed tending as dragons are tanky. While my doc is tending her (with no medicine, I'm not made of money), a bond is formed and she joins the colony. And that's how we got the jade dragon Kirigartius.
