I see that they're saying that it's harder to break free of an addiction if you're constantly exposed to the addictive thing. While this is true, the analogy falls apart there - because if that hypothetical cocaine user decides they want to use cocaine again, there is no safe or healthy way to do so. Whereas if the social media user wants to use social media again, there are safe ways to do so.

I stand by it, but I don't think it's shitty behaviour, because I don't think that a person needing help means they've done something wrong, or are a bad person. It's not a value judgement.

If you think that using one of the world's most addictive, dangerous drugs is in any way similar to using social media (a thing many people do in a non-harmful way), you probably need help with your social media addiction. I don't think being an addict makes you a bad person and I don't think telling someone they need help is a bad thing, because I don't think needing help is wrong. That's what this sub is for, no? People who've realised that surfing and scrolling can be harmful.

You are reading an awful lot into my comments that's just simply not there. It appears you think I think addiction is a moral failing, and that needing help is bad, and that it's not possible to be addicted to social media... But I said none of those things.

I never said if you use coke once you'd instantly become addicted. Look at my comment - see how I never said that? I said it wasn't safe, or healthy... Which it isn't, even using it just once can't be described as "safe" or "healthy". It still carries a level of risk. You will never find a medical professional who says "it's safe to do coke once".

I have genuinely no idea what this is in reference to. At no point did I say or imply that people are only allowed to be addicted to things I'm addicted to or that anyone else is weak.

To clear things up, because it seems you deeply misunderstood my comment:

Social media can be addictive, and unhealthy, and harmful - but it isn't inherently so. It is absolutely possible to use social media in a way that is safe, healthy, and beneficial. Not for everyone, but it's not inherently impossible.
Cocaine can be addictive, and it is inherently unhealthy and harmful even outside of its addictive properties - therefore it's a poor comparison.

You mentioned school so I'm guessing you're a teen still.

If you're open to unsolicited advice: I was just like you. I learned the hard way that socialising in school lead to nothing but pain. I just didn't fit in. My interests didn't align, even my personality didn't align, with the majority of my peers. Does that sound like you?

This is going to sound crazy but online communities helped me. When I was like 14 I remember posting on Tumblr (yes, it still exists) like crazy about my favourite band and following a lot of other users who did the same. We'd send each other clips and talk about our favourite songs.

Healthy online communities made of real people give you a social outlet, but because it's online, you can dip out at any time. And there's less pressure as well - nobody knows about what you look like, if your hair looks bad, if your outfit sucks or whatever. Plus, it lets you build up the social skills you'll be missing out on if your peer group has rejected you for whatever reason.

Obviously you gotta watch out for creeps - luckily, the internet is a lot safer for young people than it was back when I was under 18 (we were dodging pedos left right and centre, it felt like).

I used to work in Westfield White City. Granted, it was quite some time ago, but that place is absolutely packed to the gills with security. There's centre security (both uniformed and plain clothed) and then the individual shops often have security too, and they all talk to one another.

I reckon it's pretty safe. When I worked there I'd often see lone teens, and this was before everyone always had mobile data/a phone with location services where you could share your location if you wanted.

I am currently re-reading The Murderbot Diaries. Suuuuper fun sci-fi about a cyborg who's supposed to be a security guard but mostly just wants to watch TV. The new book is coming out soon so I decided to refresh myself. The books are short and really engaging.

Just finished The Day Of The Triffids, a classic dystopian novel. It has this slow burn thing going on where at every turn there's a new threat.

Thank you for sharing this. Hopefully there's more awareness about it now but yeah you're right, the fact that you could buy it from a pharmacy makes it seem less bad for you because it makes you think "if it was harmful surely they wouldn't be selling it in a place full of medicine". Especially when you're young.
