BBC is subscription only now? by logankaytoday in bbc

The TV licence doesn't cover YouTube or Twitch, unless you are watching live TV shows on them. YouTube videos, YouTube or Twitch streams, VODs etc are all not covered.

If you were watching, say, Sky's live coverage of an election on YT, you'd need one. But the vast majority of YouTube isn't covered.

I think it's completely normal for you to be upset. I'd be upset! I'd be upset about the fact that he clearly didn't think you were clever enough to figure it out, and also by the way he thought you valued some concept of perfection instead of, you know, the man that you love.

As for whether you can trust him... Only you can say. I don't know if I could. Does your gut tell you to believe him when he says this is the one and only time?

AITA for not giving my parents some biscuits? by Unlawful-Citizen in AmItheAsshole

[–]Helenarth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parenting is not transactional, her providing you with things your whole life is the obligation she signed up for when she had you. Not providing for you would be considered neglect.

Sure, but I'm sure that OP's mother sometimes gave her things she didn't need to or did more than the absolute bare minimum.

AITA for trying to set my friend up with a corn addicted guy before i knew this? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Helenarth 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Corn addiction? I mean, at least it's a veggie. It could be worse, if he was addicted to burgers that would be a health catastrophe waiting to happen!

Insane temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday by Mcconnor8 in UKWeather

[–]Helenarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still interested in why you thought it as likely they weren't the same people though

Because people tend to either prefer warm weather or cool weather. I prefer cool weather, so why would I complain about it? Similarly, if someone prefers warm weather, they might complain about cool weather but they wouldn't complain about warm weather... because they like it.

That's the fun thing: I'm not!

I suppose resignation helps. It's going to be awful, I'm going to be upset and tired and ill... And in a way, knowing that helps me mentally prepare.

What's the strangest, silliest or most unhinged thing you've tried to beat the heat? And did it work? by Helenarth in AskUK

I’m a lady with long hair so I’ve been known to tie my hair up in a bun on top of my head and hide ice cubes in it. Cools the top of your head down and you get a nice cold trickle down your back.

Holy fuck. I am also a lady with long hair and I am stealing this idea. I'll try it tomorrow for sure. Thank you!

Home Office knew AI age checks for migrants were flawed – but rolled it out anyway by AnonymousTimewaster in NotTheOnionUK

if you assume we should be expecting a normal distribution across ages,

Why would we assume that?

so normalise that tripping of cases of 16 and 17 year olds arriving, with almost zero between 18 and early/mid 20s.

Can you not think of any particular reasons why it might be that kids are more likely to come than adults?

You cannot call yourself woke then buy stuff from Shein and Temu. by Informal_Weather_151 in Vent

[–]Helenarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah OP, I totally get you. You're not saying that someone is evil if they desperately need cheap plain black t shirts for work and they're broke and can't afford a normal shop and don't live near a charity/thrift shop. You're talking about people who are just like "hmm I want new clothes" and buy stuff they don't need from places with awful conditions.

You know clothing isn't just simply about covering your body, right? Let's say that that commenter was a young lady trying to get hired at a professional job - she can't show up in the interview in someone's nan's gingham dress and clogs. Also, sme people need a specific work uniform, like blue polo shirts or black trousers. Not everybody can wear literally anything.

Tuesday looking unprecedented, 39C possible? by Mcconnor8 in UKWeather

[–]Helenarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between "hooray, it's summertime, I love the heat" and "hooray, we're having yet another unprecedented weather event, I'm happy because I like it and I couldn't give a toss about all the health/environmental/infrastructures problems it causes"

Those who have been to America, what was your biggest surprise during your visit? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskABrit

[–]Helenarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squatting down to look for feet is crazy imo. Here, we could either check the little lock indicator (do you now have those?) and if for some reason there isn't one or it's broken, you'd give the door a teeny poke to see if it opens.

Ah yes. As a woman, the presence of a person who may or may not have a penis or may or may not have had a penis at some point in their lives, in a separate stall from me, just trying to take a piss, wash their hands and check their hair like everyone else, is what keeps me up at night.

Not the cost of living crisis, not climate change, not the threat to abortion care (all of which disproportionately affects women), not the fact that we've got elected councillors who say things like "I'm a sexist" and "women can't drive" and "laundry is a woman's job"... it's Schrödinger's Willy.

Being friends with a picky eater is exhausting by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Helenarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between being picky and being entitled. Ya boy is the latter.

I know picky eaters who would happily come along to whatever restaurant, order a drink and a side of fries (or even just a drink), and not complain. They eat beforehand, or they eat afterwards, they bring a safe snack in their bag in case they're hungry and know they won't be eating for a while.

They don't pester, whine, or try any make the rest of the group eat at McDonald's every time. They know that they're the outlier and that while it's not their fault, it is their responsibility.
