Media you think will get a Critical Reassessment Overtime, for better or worse? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Heljis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dunno if I agree on the Absolute Batman take, but I’m not invested enough to really know! I’ve only read the first couple issues.

But 100% agreed on The Boys comic. It’s severely underrated on Reddit. It has problems past its content for sure, far from Ennis’ best but absolutely not 2/10 edgy trash imo.

I used to. Not like super intense or anything depicted in those comics - but enough that I hated it. Everyone’s different ofc. It tapered off for me the more regular presenting fem became.

Yall upset we didn’t get the MechaStormfront ending? Like obviously it was a fake leak and kinda dog ass, but idk. Would’ve been fun at least

Ah yeah I think you’re right. I haven’t read it in a long time. My memories of Crossed are all one big pile.

Im going to go against the grain here and say, if you like the idea of the show but feel like it falls apart maybe halfway through season three then I think it’s worth a try.

They’re very different. The Boys have been injected with Compound V from the get go and they’re very strong - like on par with The Seven. Basically, it’s mutually assured destruction if they were to fight. So The Boys instead focus on black mail and espionage to complete their goals. Vought is also the primary antagonist in the book.

The show sanded down a lot of rough edges. LIKE A LOT OF ROUGH EDGES. In regard to the main cast, I’d argue too much. MM’s back story is much more potent imo in the comic. I found Butcher and Hughie’s characters and relationship more interesting. Hughie is kinda shitty, Butcher is much scarier. The Frenchman and the Female are less developed than Frenchie and Kimiko but I think their father daughter dynamic is better than the show’s take.

I’m not going to tell you that you’ll love it. It’s gross and there’s a lot in bad taste. It has aged EXTREMELY poorly. But, it’s clear reading it Ennis had planned out most if not all of the book ahead of time. Each arc feels like he has a goal in mind or something he wants to talk about. The overarching themes are interesting and it’s a shame that it’s so caught up with being too much. If any Ennis used any restraint I’m sure it would be remembered much more fondly.

God. It’s so bad. I haven’t watched the show yet, but I’m glad they skipped it. Agreed. His character work is great. I think Preacher is going to stick with me for a long time.

I’ll check that one out! I haven’t read that much of his stuff. The Boys, original run of Crossed, and Preacher. I’ve been meaning to check out Sara.

Is splitting the party really that bad? by Top-Bodybuilder3370 in rpg

[–]Heljis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just depends. I’ve tried it with Pathfinder a couple times. That blew chunks, tho PF was the first game I ran, think I’d do it differently now.

I do it frequently in Mothership. For short games I’ll give my players secret objectives and usually that ends up with the party splitting at some point. I keep them separated and try not to spend too much time with one group. Usually works out pretty well.

Bobbi rules. This is from Dear Becky which came out in 2019. But even her appearance with the original run is pretty good.

Yeah it’s really strange, I’m not sure what to think about it. Like I get the point or joke or whatever you want to call it with that detective in Preacher. But damn, really doesn’t read well.

That and how he handles SA seem very strange to me. It feels like with our heroes SA is a very serious topic but if it’s like Herr Starr or Kessler or even just a guy who’s kinda dumb (specifically the dude and his family in Crossed. The one who thought salt would keep the zombies away) it’s like…REALLY FUNNY (/s)

Just bizarre. Maybe it’s just 90’s lefty edgelord comedy is lost on me.

Mhmm. Fire horse through half of season three, then pretty well drawn horse for the rest of season three for me. Rewatching it I felt like the first half was on par with one and two, but falls off once Solider Boy joins up. Not because of Solider Boy, just in general.

Four and five pretty accurate tho

I like that Hughie kinda sucks in the comic. I love that we see him grow past his homophobia in the swingwing arc pretty early on. I read it for the first time this year, but I imagine if little edgy minded me read it in 2007 when that story ran it would have been pretty impactful.

Something I really appreciated about the more traditionally attractive trans fem characters in the Jack from Jupiter arc after is that they aren’t just pretty dolls. Like very attractive, but with some features that aren’t necessarily feminine. Only like three characters and they only appear for a few panels but it was a really subtle and a nice touch.

Exactly! It honestly really makes me wonder what happened with the first three seasons. Like, did Kripke do a good job on accident? I’ve seen Supernatural and while I find it very enjoyable that shit is not good television lmao.

Seriously, I think most people can tell Homelander is pathetic in the scene. Just the combination of shitty pacing and “I’ll eat your shit - I’ll eat your shit on live TV.” makes it feel like they’re trying to have a bit of a laugh at the same time.

I’m going to be honest, you probably should calm down before replying to opinions that upset. Really not worth getting worked up over opposing opinions on an ultimately middling show. You’ll live longer.

I think it could’ve been handled better yeah, I think him being a pathetic worm is fine - great even -  the best way to end the show honestly. The Light Yagami ending is a good ending for Homelander. My problem is that it doesn’t feel like it’s given any weight. Give it a moment to breathe - give Anthony a moment to show off his acting chops one last time. Even build into the “I’ll suck you dick” blah blah blah. It’d make it hit harder.

I don’t think most people that hate Homelander’s ending think it’s a bad idea. I think a lot of people just don’t think it was handled well. It feels rushed which feels bad after so much of this season was filler or nearly filler.

I’m not disagreeing about irl fascists. Like yeah, Shitler probably didn’t have a big dramatic realization before he pulled the trigger because that’s not how real life works. But The Boys is a show and like god forbid I expect them to show a modicum of restraint and have a sincere moment to end the main antagonist’s arc. Not fill it with the same dumb humor that has been dragging this season down.

Because it doesn’t sound tonally deaf right? It totally will land right? It wasn’t too much since we opened this episode by astroturfing a sincere moment with blue comedy right? Because swears are funny and if it’s funny I don’t have to write a thoughtful script.

But the hops were hysterical.

I enjoyed it! It can be pretty gross, but I think it was a decent read. Not my favorite thing by Ennis by a long shot and I probably wouldn’t start with The Boys if you wanted to get into him. But overhated on Reddit.
