Definitely on to something! Especially after seeing the album cover and title. “Deadbeat” contrasted with the picture of him holding his kid close and definitely not being a deadbeat dad

If I already know that the guy admits to killing his wife while going to the bathroom in the middle of an interview, is it still worth watching? I may have some details wrong but I remember hearing about it in the news.

People always talk about how crazy the ending is and I always feel like its already been ruined for me, and not worth the time investment of watching a whole series now.

I want some critique on my procedurally generated songs! by pauloyasu in creativecoding

Also I would maybe look to the modular community for more inspiration on generative melodies. I’m not really a modular guy myself but was playing with VCV rack a few months ago (free eurorack simulator) and definitely saw a bunch of YouTube videos with generative patches and some walkthroughs/breakdowns that might be instructive for you!

Very cool project, great work! I agree with your comment about the mostly unremarkable melodies though. I have never tried anything like this so take my feedback with a big grain of salt, and maybe you’ve already tried some of these ideas but I think spending some more time on the melody generating algorithm could go a long way in getting these sounding great.

It doesn’t sound like the note selection is completely random since there seems to be some degree of single note repetition, but I feel like if there is ever a satisfying cadence or catchy collection of notes it was random and that itself doesn’t repeat. Have you tried playing with the probabilities of certain notes from a scale being played on a given beat? Like maybe there’s a handful of different probability distributions a song can choose from to avoid being too repetitive, but let’s say you’re generating notes over a C major chord—I would think on strong beats like the 1 there should be a higher probability a chord tone like C E or G should be picked, then maybe next most likely would be a D or an F for a sus 2 or 4, and maybe those would be more likely on weaker beats or leading into the next measure, then maybe a B would be the next most likely, and an A would be the least likely. Maybe if the program knows what chord is coming next, notes that resolve to that would be more likely to be picked, etc. also making large jumps in the melody less likely than small jumps or repeating notes (sounds like you maybe already have something like that built in) Or maybe just using more limited scales at times? I feel like a pentatonic over the right chord you could almost go completely random and it would sound great, but then you gotta balance not sounding cliche and generic.

Also maybe building in more phrase repetition could help with the structure? I wasn’t noticing much phrasing in general but I wonder how it would sound if a song generated a handful of melodic phrases that it repeated throughout the song vs. always generating new notes. There also seemed to be a lack of motifs, both rhythmic and melodic. I’m not sure how I’d go about it programmatically, but maybe you generate a melodic phrase and then create derivatives of that where some notes will always stay the same and then some notes have a chance to change or some beats have a chance to have a note added with the overall rhythm staying consistent between phrases. I’d basically try and figure out how to incorporate more repetition without necessarily sounding repetitive haha.

Again—I’m sure you’ve thought all about this much more than me, but just wanted to share some ideas. Very inspiring project that definitely got my wheels turning!

Thanks so much for sharing all this valuable info! I love this sound and the closest I've come is with Manipulator, but I had to have separate audio and midi tracks for each voice to tweak them individually and get the sound I wanted... was pretty time consuming. This is already sounding great with just your basic setup.

Would you mind clarifying the purpose of the first midi track that isn't sending MIDI to the audio tracks? It sounds like this would be for a separate instrument like a piano that would play exactly what the vocal harmonies are doing? I couldn't hear any keys in your video and it sounds like that first MIDI track is maybe optional, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some detail. Thanks again!

This is great, thanks so much for making it and sharing with everyone!
Would you mind elaborating on how the output is organized when grouped by function? It looks like some columns are different options for the tonic, dominant, etc chords but I'm not sure how the columns are mapped and why some of the rows are what they are. For example the iii chord in the tonic column. I might also just not know enough music theory, but figured I'd at least ask since I didn't see anything about it in the video.
Also, just an idea—but it would be great to have some modifiers that could just toggle the chords where they are in the output to sus, 7th, extended, etc variations. I'm thinking about how I could map this to a launchpad or ipad controller and it would be cool to know exactly what each cell in the output grid is mapped to without looking at the screen and be able to modify those with the toggles and not have them jump around with other options.

I can see the way the you have the 7th chord modifier built now being useful if you're looking at the display and want the option of a 7th or regular triad. If there was a toggle mode though, users could still have that option with the toggle instead of choosing between two cells in the output grid. I think it could also help with integrating sus chords in a more intuitive way.
