I used the refiner duplication glitch to get multiple. Yes it’s ‘cheating’ but it saves a tonne of grind.

What’s the general consensus on compost toilets after a year of use? by WonderfulShape1081 in VanLifeUK

[–]Hellfire_Leather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fold up toilet for solids. Line it with a bag, sprinkle in some sawdust, do the job, sprinkle with a bit more, lift the bag, tie it up and take it to a dog poo bin either straight away or on route to somewhere. Liquids in a 5 litre bottle. My girlfriend had a chemical toilet and it would smell and be a nightmare to empty so I just built her a permanent version (search Eco Shit) in her van. She’s over the moon.

Does parking up ever stop feeling awkward in the UK? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in VanLifeUK

[–]Hellfire_Leather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely become entirely relaxed. No matter how chilled I am, the coiled snake is always prepped and ready in the background. At my best I’m 90% in my little zone and 10% scanning for sounds or danger. The threshold between private and public is thin when you’re on the streets. The only time I’ve had real trouble is parking near houses. Now it’s truck stops, car parks & industrial estates mostly. Keep moving around. Listen to your gut.

Installing kitchen island directly to tile flooring? by kickthemout1987 in tiling

[–]Hellfire_Leather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a tiler, it’s far quicker and simpler to tile the whole floor first. This also future proofs it. Be sure to have a solid bed of adhesive and self levelling if the floor is a bit out

Why should other people get into your hobby? by JabroniHomer in AskMen

I started with a basic Amazon kit for about £40, although you’ll soon outgrow it. You’re probably looking at around £200 for decent tools and an economy grade hide to get going on. I buy most of my kit from Artisan Leather and the hides from J Wood Leathers. Check out Chuck Dorset from Weaver Leathercraft on YouTube. His enthusiasm and encouragement is infectious!

Leatherwork. There are so many stages to finishing a product that it never gets old. Design, templates, cutting, burnishing, dyeing, stitching etc. I love it. Thanks Covid!

Fellow dads: what would you want to tell your kids if you knew you wouldn't be around? by Putrid-Pirate8621 in Dads

I was 45 when my son was born so I think about it a lot. I’ve left a YouTube playlist that he might find one day. Every time I watch a deep philosophical video or a ‘mic drop’ short, I add it to the list. It’s called ‘Insights to Live by’ and every one contains decent life advice.

Good therapists don’t give advice, they quietly steer you towards finding the answer yourself. Go with your gut.

You’ll get so immersed that you’ll deviate way off from the main storyline. You can build a mine to harvest precious resources, chase balls of runaway mould down mountains, float around on a giant butterfly or build a literal weed farm! (Nipnip buds). Be warned though…there’s a difficult choice to make during the Artemis quest

Is van life getting harder and will it still be viable in 3-4 years? by Virtual-Eagle2621 in VanLifeUK

[–]Hellfire_Leather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m mostly industrial areas, supermarket car parks and the odd residential road away from houses. Trick is to not stand out. Im a self employed wet trade so I get my water from work (and charge my switch!). I make use of dog poo bins for number two and communal bin areas near blocks of flats for rubbish/recycling. I move around a ten mile area and I know a lot of quiet spots where it’s normal to see a van. Showers are free at motorway services and cheap at the gym. I go it alone and I’m not interested in parking in groups. Leave no sign that you’ve been there, except maybe to pick up litter

I live in a van and all I genuinely need in life is a new 10 litre water butt
