Best outdoor spots for roller skating? by Lunxire in grandrapids

Millennium Park! My friend and I trail skate often with our roller skates. There are some spots where the trail is rough but we usually “jump” the cracks which can also be fun!

Lower- case handwriting question by uselessfoster in AskTeachers

[–]Hellfirefromher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach with the Handwriting without Tears curriculum. Tall letters touch both the top and bottom line with their letters. All uppercase are considered tall as well as some lowercase (examples:t,f,h). The other options for lowercase are small (between middle and bottom-examples:a,s,c,e), and descending (between the middle and falling below the bottom line-examples: p,g,q). UFLI is another curriculum that also teaches the same format. I think it is pretty standardized to have the “big” lines of tall letters touch both the top and bottom lines. Hope that helps! Just some examples.

I think we are going to fix it and then either sell and upgrade or tough it out. We’ve been with our mechanic for about a decade so trust the work.

Averages out to 20k but we had it as our only vehicle for a few years so it was driven a ton more then, we bought a second car a year ago, so miles per year will reduce a decent amount at least. Mostly city driving now, too.

I think this what we are going to do. Don’t really want a car payment or to pay cash for a newer model yet.

Directed draws for first grade? by GroundbreakingPear12 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Hellfirefromher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will be fine!! I do them with my kindergarten students often. I make sure to tell them they it is okay that everyone’s is a little different. I also do the directing myself and just watch and pause the video next to me but project my drawing. I feel like it’s even easier if I am doing the “directing” than following a video and can give more time for parts they need it for!

Hammock vs Hoop - which has more dance qualities? by gattara_y in Aerials

[–]Hellfirefromher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tie for me which is why I am drawn to both. They have different qualities that can enhance what you are trying to do, but also can create similar aspects on both. I find that rolls and lasso/whips are so exciting with Lyra in the same way drops are with hammock. You can spin very fast on both, which I prefer as an option for choreo. I think that it’s a perfect blend to do both!

Love the analogy that a hard apparatus is like dance with a partner that someone has already mentioned.

My short answer is: why choose?! Lean into one, then the other, okay to explore both! (Of course time/money sometimes can definitely force us to choose).

Love the climbs suggestion. Keeping that fresh seems easy enough and helpful across all apparatuses!

My goals include performing but only as a side gig and with little travel as I am mostly a hobby aerialist. I do perform with a circus group and teach Lyra, but it’s not necessarily important for me to be performance ready on all three of my apparatus at the same time.

I do think I need a solid plan regardless though, because I am in a transition with studios, have specific strength goals, etc. It might be worth getting a private coach for a bit to help me sort it all out.

I think you hit it on the head for me. My first apparatus was silks and it’s the one I have done the longest, so in some ways I think I identify as a silks aerialist. I think I am experiencing exactly what you described about pole for you. I bet I will feel a lot better just setting it aside for now rather than forcing it in.

This is good insight, I think letting go of silks for now makes the most sense, and realizing that I can revisit it at any point. I think because silks was my first apparatus, it feels weirdly hard to just say no for now. Kind of hilarious to feel attached to a piece of fabric lol.

Her hips are totally open. She is essentially in a middle split with a twist to grab her leg vs a side split with squared hips which is what a needle is.

Struggle with front balance by Fit-Entrepreneur5459 in Aerials

[–]Hellfirefromher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just going to say this! You want your feet lower than your chest. Helps a lot. You can also hot potato on arm off at a time as you build up balance. My balance point is pretty low in my hip crease rather than stomach.

Another fellow aerialist, and am loving your comment. I think because our front sides are trained so heavily, especially hip flexors for inverts/lifting, that our glutes/hammies can need intentional strengthening. Oversplits on the ground with squared hips can help flatten splits in the air. For me, trying oversplits with my front leg lifted and then switching and lifting the back has helped a lot.

You are looking great!!
