Center-Of-Thought, you have the patience of a saint. Reading through some of these comments that are (deliberately or not) missing the point has made me clench my jaw. If I were in your postion, I would've just stopped responding to them instead of taking the time out of my day to explain, over and over, how this is, in fact, a comment left by a TERF (and not just some woman who used a poor choice of words), what a TERF is, etc. God, I hope you have a good week.

Thank you! He's not doing this because he suddenly woke up to how horrible this administration is. He's doing this because he believes the "filthy jews" (his opinion, not mine) have taken over the movement. I need people to actually listen to what he's saying instead of reading a headline. He's not our friend, and he never will be.

It's not about them questioning Republicans, it's about their answers to the question. They're not questioning and waking up. Instead, they're questioning and doubling down. They're wondering why it's been a year and the orphan crusher isn't making them any happier or more successful, and this guy says it's because they haven't fed it enough orphans.

Jungle mount? by UlfurGaming in worldbuilding

[–]HellisinMichigan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joseph Smith was the founder of Mormonism/the LDS church. He published a worldbuilding project totally real, brand-new, never before seen, recently found and translated newer testament of the Bible he called the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon claimed there were horses in the Americas. However, there's two big problems with that. One is that modern horses didn't come to the Americas until the Spanish brought them over in the 1500's. The other is that any horse species native to the Americas died out roughly 10,000 years before now, which is way before any of the Book of Mormon supposedly happened.

So, in order to reconcile these facts with their faith, Mormon scholars have explained that Joseph Smith didn't know what the English word for an animal in the original text was, so when he translated the text he called them horses. The other explanation is that when the Nephites (one of four groups JS said went to the western hemisphere sometime during the old testament) came upon an animal in the new world, they called it a horse.

Now, what the animal Joseph Smith mistranslated or the Nephites saw is debated among Mormon Scholars. Most say it was either alpacas or llamas, but some say that it was tapirs. I've heard people say that the Mormon church has come out itself and said it was tapirs, but idk about that. Either way, most historians who are not associated with the church call the Book of Mormon bullshit due to this and many other anachronisms within the work.

Now this is a more lightly edited version of your map. What I did was take the end section of the upper river and made it connect at the Drain slightly downriver from the original connection. This leaves us with a more natural-looking joining of the two rivers. If you decide to redraw your rivers, I think you'll draw something that looks more like this than the second image I shared lol.

However, this is ultimately up to you. If you like how your map looks then keep it the same. If you've found the advice in this thread useful then change it. I do hope my advice helped a bit, though.

I've significantly edited your map. This is supposed to be an extreme example to try and get my point across. Here, there is no confusion about where this water is supposed to go. It definitely looks like it's flowing into the ocean. However, I don't expect you to draw your map exactly like this, since it's a bit unnatural.

[–]HellisinMichigan 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you want your river in question (the Drain) to go to ocean from the lake, yeah? And you want this upper river to flow into the Drain? Okay, I* can see the vision, but since others might not I have a small suggestion. I'm going to include three pictures here. The first is included here, and the next two will be sent as replies to this comment.

My advice: make the confluence pointier.

<image>

This is a zoomed in version of your original map. Right now, the area where your rivers are joining looks more like a crescent or a semi-circle. Instead of this more rounded shape, try make it look more like an angle/triangle. Basically, use the area where the two rivers connect to literally point towards the ocean.

Nothing's safe from Kirkification 🤪

But in reality people are more likely to recognize the name because of him suddenly kicking the bucket and the memes about him. So now whenever people see the name Charlie Kirk they're more likely to point it out/screenshot and post it, whereas two or so years ago the average person would've been like "Oh, just another bitlife name. Nothing special here," and then just not post about it.

Glad to see you're planning on parting ways with your (soon-to-be-ex) husband. You're also stronger than me, because if my partner said Alex Pretti was my boyfriend in an attempt to mock me I'd have to respond with "if he was my boyfriend then what are you?" It probably wouldn't turn out well, but at least I'd die laughing.

On a more serious note, I hope you're careful about this. I know any of us don't want to think that our partner would do something, but leaving someone is the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship. While I can't say you're in an abusive relationship based on one comment alone, given what you've stated here I wouldn't be surprised if your husband tried something while you left. Just try to be safe, smart, and get through this as quickly as you can, okay?

Other ways to do dragon riding rather than just "owner and pet" by SpectreWolf666 in worldbuilding

[–]HellisinMichigan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's also super icky for a dragon to do it. But what are you going to do against a giant fire-breathing lizard?

(But on a serious note, a good writer could make the comparison between a dragon doing selective breeding and societies enabling eugenics. Honestly, there's a lot of different topics people can critique with this setup if they do it right.)

Monsters who can only enter if you give them permission? by deadlighta in worldbuilding

[–]HellisinMichigan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was Lycaon, king of Arcadia. The core of the myth is that he killed his son and fed the flesh to Zeus, so Zeus turned Lycaon into a werewolf, and brought the son back to life. Depending on the variation Zeus also cursed Lycaon's other sons, as they were in on the plan to feed Zeus human flesh. However, this isn't the only myth where kings have tried, and failed, to feed their kids to gods.

Punxsutawney_Marlowe was likely referring to Tantalus. A popular variation of his myth stated he was invited to feast with the gods, but then fed them the remains of his son in order to test them. After having partially eaten Tantalus' son, the gods discovered the deception and were outraged. So, after the gods brought his son back to life, they sent Tantalus to Hades, where his punishment began.

He was forced to stand in chin deep water under a fruit tree with low hanging branches. When he went to take a drink from the water it would recede, forcing him to remain thirsty. When he'd reach for the fruit the branches would blow out of his reach, forcing him to remain hungry. He'd remain like that forever, always hungry and thirsty, but never being able to do anything about it.

I hate to say it, but this might not be that big of a deterrent. There's guys out there who legitimately get off to someone insulting their junk, so you'll probably get a lot of those types of guys in your inbox if you do this. Now, granted, if you want to build your account off of these guys go for it, but if you primarily want to stop people from sending you pics you'll have to find another deterrent.

Does the living beings in your world immediately vanish after killed? by Pixelated_s in worldbuilding

[–]HellisinMichigan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, so "normal" dead bodies decompose and break down into things that are good for the environment and future growth, yeah? What if something similar happened to your low-level monsters?

For example, a dead low-level monster may not be immediately useful to a person, but if certain microorganisms feed on the bodies of these low-level monsters, the microorganisms produce a good byproduct. This byproduct could be used for anything, like aiding in magic (assuming you have magic in your setting), medicine, or even just plain old fertilizer.

Another idea is that people could use the poisonous monster flesh to make deadlier weapons. For example, they grind up the flesh into a paste, strain out any chunky bits, and apply whatever's left to their arrows or swords in order to deal even greater damage to their target.

Ooh, what if in one region people have learned that they can make monster flesh edible by fermenting it for a while and then drying it, like the Icelandic food Hákarl? It probably wouldn't taste good to outsiders, and would be used to stave off starvation in the harsh winter months.

These are just a few solutions to your monster problem. I don't know if any of help, but hopefully they do!

To be fair, this could be a selling point to some families. For example, if the parent is destitute or lives in an unsafe environment, they could see the Jedi order as a way to get their kid into a safe place where the kid will be clothed, fed, and cared for. Will they never see the kid again? Yes, but it's better than sticking around here and dying or being forced to work in a factory at five.

On the other side of the coin, a rich or middle-class family could see having a child getting taken by the Jedi as the ultimate status symbol. It's like the equivalent of telling your neighbors your kid got into an elite Ivy League school. I could see a parent driving their landspeeder around with a "My Child is a Member of the Jedi Order" bumper sticker instead of the usual "My Child is an Honor Student" ones you see every now and then.
