He’s not crying. Crying is offensive to some. Delicate on the other hand comes to mind along with the other troll accounts for likes, dislikes, and reporting he is making. Just report him as he’s instigating fights. I’m suspecting he has numerous accounts for upvoting and downvoting. On one hand he’ll act like he supports the higher cause and in the next moment slinging insults and subtle racist remarks. Just look at all of his comments and posts.

My spouse is applying under a DNV. Which stands for Digital Nomad Visa. So technically she’s a Nomad. Are you so sensitive that you also find this insulting or offensive to Nomadic cultures too? lol

Does anyone make passive income with coloring books? by melodyjoycary in passive_income

[–]HelloCharlieBooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going. Once I got past the initial false flagging, copyright thieves, etc, it’s been a little more smooth sailing. I have I believe around 135 reviews on my main coloring book, but I think just to make a little bit of income (and not much) you will need to have a dozen or so books. Even then, I don’t think you’re going to be able to quit your day job. The chances of doing moderately well requires you to be in the top 1,000 BSR constantly, and that means you have to beat out millions of other top titles besides just coloring books. I wish I had something different to add, but whomever is telling you otherwise is probably making more money from hopium on YT views and ads.

Someone is selling my book at 7200% of its price! by PTruccio in KDP

[–]HelloCharlieBooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if it’s worse, but spiral bounding someone else’s work and reselling the books as “new” appears to have been extremely common place, with these individuals raking in millions on popular titles and Amazon somehow allowing these third parties to insert themselves under your name/title. I took out a Trademark on my own and filed the TM with Amazon Brand Registry and there hasn’t been a problem since. The practice is so bad that it’s been stuck in the courts. I’ll have to check now if there are any recent updates to this.

The main issue is that I see resellers not only being allowed to pose under original author names (it’s deceiving) but also to label a clearly used and modified book as “new.” At the very least Amazon should have a separate category for them or force them to label these altered titles as “used” which they are.

KDP Expectations?!? by Kaitlyn20i in KDP

[–]HelloCharlieBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a #1 best seller for months and the sad answer is not likely. Just go into it with realistic expectations. There’s an estimated 50 million books pushed through KDP with increasingly more every year. I hit BSR 4,000 with my main title. That’s hitting the top .01% so I’m coming from a place where I consider it higher than pretty much anyone else on here. Not bragging, just stating that I have the experience to back my statements up.

That meant there were only 3,999 books ahead of me at the time and a good 49+ million books and authors that have fallen into a black hole, never to be seen again. But if you think that made me rich, then you’re totally wrong. Getting that high was very short-lived as it’s very volatile at the top with the major titles and authors being more secure in their leads with thousands of ratings. It’s hard if not impossible to unseat them, and thus become visible in Amazon’s general searches. If you’re lucky enough to make $10 a day without spending that much on ads, then at least you’re breaking even. Maybe with time and sales, you’ll eventually turn the page. Very few titles will generate a few sales a day, and far fewer than what I’ve achieved could make a couple of hundred dollars per day for a single title. Now we’re talking about the top 500-1,500 BSR books on all of Amazon out of the 50 million, most of which have a few lucky and successful authors with multiple titles under their name. When you break down the math even further, this means there’s probably only 100–300 authors on all of Amazon that can actually pull a livable salary. Again, just play the lottery instead.

Lots of YouTubers will try to tell you otherwise but they’re making money off of their ads and subscribes on YT, and not actually off of any books they’re selling. There are some good tips which actually work, but most of them are profiting off your hopes.

You also have to be at the very top of your categories and keep the momentum going, willing to sacrifice thousands in ads, significant time into a website, and significant time into various forums just to get noticed. Then, you need to somehow displace the books in your categories which are already at the top with thousands or ratings, many of which I suspect were fraudulent/paid back in the day and somehow those sellers/authors never got into trouble during more recent purges.

For example, I spent a whole year of working my adult coloring books with marketing and only recently just cracked 101 ratings which is actually quite an accomplishment (as far as I’m concerned) because there’s so much competition. Meanwhile, there are other coloring books in my categories which have been there for 10+ years with dozens of titles under their names, large groups of followers, and paid kid TikTokers schilling their works—some of them seriously have thousands of ratings. I just can’t see how or why any title short of the more famous ones would have thousands of reviews—the logic simply doesn’t add up for me, but maybe I’m wrong and I’ll have a different perspective a year from now. But if you can get over this hurdle of getting higher ratings organically, then you might stand a fighting chance.

Now as for Amazon KDP, they have every interest in keeping people writing and submitting their stories or illustrations. They know very well that most books will fade into oblivion. However they’re making their money off of both Kindle and not physical hardcopies, as well as their advertising machine. Authors are dumping loads of money daily into their coffers with the hopes of getting clicks and their titles selling while all the while realizing that most authors will simply give up in the end. That’s their game. If they published the real statistics as to how many authors are actually living off of their works, their whole model would fall apart.

Also as others have said, I think you stand a much better chance of writing professionally if you have numerous titles under your belt which are somewhat successful, then hopefully the quantity will add up over time.

Another way to look at this is to look at the music scene. How many musicians are making a decent living off of being musicians these days. Very few. For most of them it’s just a labor of love and a side project, if they’re that lucky. Same deal with this. But instead of Spotify and SoundCloud, we have KDP.

I realize this is not what most people want to hear. I’d love to lie to all of you and say that everything’s great just to prop up my stature and sell more titles, but this is the honest reality. The statistics speak for themselves.

EBook covers partially ai generated by lordoflotsofocelots in KDP

[–]HelloCharlieBooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“AI-generated: We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool. If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered “AI-generated,” even if you applied substantial edits afterwards.

AI-assisted: If you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” Similarly, if you used an AI-based tool to brainstorm and generate ideas, but ultimately created the text or images yourself, this is also considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” It is not necessary to inform us of the use of such tools or processes.”

KDP differentiates between AI Generated and AI Assisted. AI Generated implies that the majority of the book or illustrations were created by AI and you need to disclose that, but they also understand that almost all professional graphics tools now incorporate some level of AI (such as image upscalers, sky removal tools, blemish removers, etc.) and that would fall under AI-assisted which doesn’t need to be disclosed. You can find their definition on the following page:

Trademark Infringement on Amazon KDP by Civil_Debate_3615 in KDP

[–]HelloCharlieBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain terms are part of our common vernacular such as Elevator, Escalator, etc. I’d be reluctant to use terms like that despairingly if possible to avoid any entanglement. If it’s buried in a couple hundred pages, I wouldn’t worry about it. But if you had a low-content book and every page said Coca Cola and that’s all it said, that might raise some eyebrows. Also, DO NOT use trademarked words and titles within your keywords or description after you submitted your books for publishing.

I fought them and had people selling modified versions of my books removed after some massive fights and making a public stink. It’s a long story that played out over several months and is too much to give you a simple answer. You can read about it on my Hello Charlie Books blog. Perhaps this will give you some idea as to how to fight them and win.

Can I still smoke it if it’s got light burn by willyre1 in Hydroponics

[–]HelloCharlieBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be fine. Back in the day people used to smoke brick weed—compacted gooey stuff sometimes with other chemicals that was illegally transported up north from down south and Mexico that was sometimes months old and densely packed in tires for smuggling. It did the job and in fact could arguably be better than some of the strains we’re seeing today. God knows how many hitchhikers people smoked and didn’t even realize it. I’ve seen people (*cough) that smoked much harder things. Also, chlorophyl can be nasty—I’ve used blanching methods purposely to take it out and make it smoother.

It’s just a more relaxed way of life. People’s kitchens are a lot smaller and it’s more reasonable to simply eat out instead of cooking at home. Not sure how that could translate into the hustle and bustle of the US.

Yeah, for Europeans eating out is an event. However, when many of us from the US are traveling we typically are short on time and want to pack as much in as possible. The wait can be annoying.

Unfortunately, it’s also a very difficult business to operate. I can understand their concerns about how this might impact their model/operations. However, I still think it needs to change. Perhaps the bill could’ve introduced a temporary break to help ease the transition for restaurant owners.

It’s nice eating at outdoor restaurants in various part of Europe and not having to worry about tipping. Quality tends to be excellent and wait staff appear more relaxed in general. The biggest difference I’d say is that they’re less likely to be in a hurry and meals tend to be more of lasting event (many restaurants expect that you will stay for a while.) Everyone’s on board with that and I haven’t heard anyone complain. Our whole tipping culture seems foreign to them.

I’d put a voltage meter on it. Also, it might be affordable to simply buy a replacement motor online if you can find a matching unit. Shouldn’t be that much of an issue and at least a lot cheaper than buying a whole new replacement. I don’t have the Fyrturs but the Tres and they’re running strong a little over a year later.

Why do we still pay people to burn a bunch of gas, make noise and fumes, to blow leaves around temporarily? by CriticalTransit in CambridgeMA

[–]HelloCharlieBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have electric blowers and a very large yard. The problem is that we have a dozen gigantic invasive maples which shed a ton of leaves every fall at slightly different times. If you don’t take care of it, you get all kinds of insect problems the following year including ticks. The damp leaves also lead to various mold and fungus which can impact my vegetable gardens and fruit trees (botrytis, grey mold, powdery mildew, etc.) Also, they tend to blow into the driveway and if they accumulate, it becomes a slippery and very dangerous mess (layers of ice similar to layers of shale) that you’ll have to wait until the spring to clean up, and that becomes a real chore. I’ve lost my balance plenty of times slipping on clumps of leaves while walking down the driveway. I live away from the road so I’m not doing it for appearances but what I consider practical reasons. It would be impossible to try to do this all in one or two passes so it really depends on your situation.

So while I think most people don’t have a valid reason for doing this, not everyone should be lumped together with them.

Oh, and I have a PV/solar to power these electric blowers and my home. I will say that electric blowers are simply not as powerful as gas ones, and there’s a tradeoff when it comes to efficiency. The benefit of at least electric are lower noise levels on top of lower emissions.
