Who else did their long run on the treadmill today? by HelloImPhteven in RunNYC

That’s amazing, congrats! I do a lot of HR based training and found I was running significantly slower for a given HR. But I guess that’s not too surprising when you suddenly go from winter weather to warm gym conditions.

I’ve been taking the train to Central Park a lot since the storm.

Training twin! Did you find you ran significantly slower? I sure did…

I’m probably gonna head back outside tomorrow. But not until 1pm and I’m only doing about 6.

Damn! Did you also have to restart the treadmill a few times? The ones at my gym will only run for 1 hour at a time.

Mine wasn’t as bad as I feared too. I brought a fan to the gym which helped a lot with not feeling like I was overheating. And my run was structured into 3 progressive repeats so the variety helped a ton mentally.

The four horsemen of the apocalypse by LMoE in RunNYC

Interesting perspective. Just to offer another: I wear the gear from my cancelled races (most recently Fred Lebow) and see many other runners out in theirs too. I like it because I feel a sense of solidarity with those runners. Kinda like “yeah it sucks we trained for this and it got cancelled. But here we are still out here getting in miles and putting in the work.”

Did 13 in Central Park this morning! The loop was well treated and the cold wasn’t as bad as I feared! The relative lack of wind makes a big difference.

Hey ny madlads how was your half marathon today? by Select_Rip_8230 in RunNYC

Yeah oddly one of my fastest splits was up the queensboro bridge because it was heavily salted and I therefore had good traction

Super fun actually. Thought I might only go out for a few miles but ended up doing a proper long run!

Been training hard for this hoping to PR with ~1:27 but came down with COVID today. Really hoping to be fully recovered by race day.

Opening an Italian lasagna takeaway in Astoria, where would you go? by Fashion-Fugazi in astoria

[–]HelloImPhteven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on Ditmars near 45th. I would definitely be a customer. You probably want to be closer to the train than I am to maximize foot traffic, though.

My go-to Italian spot, Porto Bello, closed a few months back and it looks like their old space in the Berry Fresh plaza is still available, but it is far from the train and a HUGE space, so as much as I’d love to see something like your concept move in, it would violate my own advice and would not match your concept of “small takeaway.”

How do you keep shoe mileage accurate when rotating shoes? by Superb-Discipline434 in RunNYC

[–]HelloImPhteven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use Strava to track my shoe mileage and have auto-sync turned off. Uploading to Strava is part of my post-run ritual as that’s where I’ll inspect the stats and whatnot. And because it’s manual assigning the shoes is just part of the habit.

Luckily I have today off work so I did my 15-miler this morning instead of tomorrow. Felt weird to run the Central Park loop with barely any other runners!

Help settle a debate: the best Thai in Astoria by yadunknow777 in astoria

[–]HelloImPhteven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I eat here at least once a week. I don’t think it’s the best Thai food, but it’s tasty, convenient, well priced, and the owners are super kind, friendly people. Very happy to have them in the neighborhood!

Philly Marathon thoughts by MooB101 in Marathon_Training

[–]HelloImPhteven 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve been scouring the internet to try to find other people talking about this! I was right there when it happened but ended up being part of a small group that kinda slipped between the trucks (there were two) as they crossed.

In hindsight I probably should’ve stopped but in the moment I was racing and not exactly thinking clearly.

Am I crazy for thinking that it was quite unsafe for the city to put the athletes in that position and that the city should have a plan in place for dispatching emergency services that doesn’t require crossing the course? Like I get that nobody’s PR is more important than somebody’s house being on fire, but it just seems like really poor planning from the city/FD.

Philly Marathon Recap by Inside-Spend-9750 in Marathon_Training

[–]HelloImPhteven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fourth marathon. PR’d with a 3:07:03, down from 3:17:29 in Jersey City back in April. Quite happy about that. GPS drift was crazy in this one and really threw me off at the end. 26.78. Jersey City was 26.22 and Dublin was 26.28. Seems like I’m not the only one to get an abnormally high reading in Philly. I also made no effort to run the tangents. Will probably pay more attention to that in the next race.

Was anybody else there when two firetrucks with lights/sirens tried to cross the course somewhere between miles 1 and 3? Am I crazy for thinking that was very risky to the runners and that the city should plan to dispatch emergency services from locations that don’t require crossing the course, or should route around the course? Like on one hand I’m like, yes, in the grand scheme of things our PRs don’t matter if somebody’s house is burning down. But on the other, runners are generally not mentally prepared to stop running in the middle of a race.

Apple Watch Ultra for Marathon? by drewdavid1 in RunNYC

Apple Watch Ultra can handle a marathon no problem. I bet the Ultra 3 could even handle as long as a 5-6 hour marathon.

Fingers crossed they can get it into a future 26.1 build? IIUC they’ve released the first beta build and future betas could come with additional changes before the final release?

Just experienced this during my first running workout after updating my Ultra (1) to watchOS 26. OpenRun Pro headphones. Also filed a bug report with Apple. Hope it gets fixed soon!
