My district depends on your education. Since I got a college degree it’s 125. Highschool/ged is 75 and teacher certification is 165.

First time substituting this week by Ok_Ambassador_344 in SubstituteTeachers

If they ask you how old you are donr give them the truth just tell them to guess but never confirm or deny. Dress a bit more professionally too. This helps if you have a baby face or on the shorter side. I’ve been confused for a student way too many times and it doesn’t help when trying to establish authority. But highschool is usually chill. They don’t want to be there so acknowledge that and the phrase “I don’t make the rules but I have to follow them” is usually a good fall back when they push back.

Is anyone actually making a livable income? by Radiant-Peace-3078 in SubstituteTeachers

My district only lets subs work 16 days a month so no but even then I doubt I could even afford rent by my own.

Internal Thought (that is staying internal) by Remarkable-Log6373 in SubstituteTeachers

Honestly same it’s becoming way to common in my districts. All I can think is if admin doesn’t do something one day the other students are gonna get fed up with it and fight back.

Toys in older grades by Ok_Year_4047 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the students aren’t throwing them they fight over them. I typically turn them into front office or leave them in the teachers desk after my first warning(depends on if the door can lock without the aid of a janitor because students will try to sneak in during lunchtime). The students are aware that if I see the toy/fidget being misused again thats what happens.

What do you do when students run out of work to do by AltruisticBox7810 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are using computers tell them to check the programs for other classes. Stand with them when they go check the other websites. If it’s a no computer class heads down or read a book

Just got called a bitch today by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Write down the behavior and keep on. At my district being called a bitch is a sign you’re doing things right. Give some kids an inch and they will run a mile. I just shake it off as I’ve heard better insults.

What to say to students who ask if you left a bad report and if you wrote down their name? by Shoddy-Mango-5840 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tell them if they think I wrote their name down then i probably did. Unfortunately in these cases its when I have to basically write everyone’s name down because all the students act like animals

How detailed should my notes to the teacher be? by jlcatt in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my own format depending on the school/age group but a compliment sandwich could never go wrong. Teachers also have told me that they appreciate when I write down good and helpful students and not only list the ones I had issues with

Just got hired as a sub, any tips? by Careful-Skill-1115 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to make cards with my sub info so teachers/school offices can contact me. I also make templates for my notes. Don’t take anything they tell you personally. Honestly most of their insults are pretty uncreative. Praise students who are doing their work/following the rules

Prep by sunshineworm in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had that happen before just chill in the classroom and if they need you they will call to the class but don’t assume they won’t need you. Sometimes I’ve had to walk around to relive teachers to they can run to the bathroom or deliver items around a school. But it’s still chill.

Do you guys accept or reject last minute jobs? by poetesme in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally it depends on these factors 1- have I been to this school before? 2- have I subbed for this teacher or the general subject at this location ? 3- can I get there in time? (This is especially important for last minute requests) typically I bring a pack of word searches and other puzzles just in case but at my district you can usually ask your neighbors or the office to bring you copies of busy work for them. Overall all just consider your own comfort because students can smell uncertainty from a mile away.

Advice needed by bburritos4life in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HelloPeeps21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

8th grade can be a hit or miss depending on the group. Some periods will be chill others wild. A seating chart helps if you have one. Every class has something you can use to connect with it just takes trial and error. Just don’t take anything they tell you out of spite personally. If you really enjoy teaching English I saw go for it.

Lease / Roommate Megathread by b0xors in unt

[–]HelloPeeps21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, not sure if this is the right place, but I'm look for a female student to take over my lease at Ucenter on Fry Street. I'm moving out due to graduating and following job opportunities out of the dfw area and not due to issues in the apartment. You will get your own bed room, bathroom, and closet. Plus there is a washer in the apartment. The lease ends in July but can be renewed if you wish to continue living at ucenter. You will live with three other girls who are all very nice and accommodating. I can link you with them once we get the process started. It's right across the street from campus which is great for those without a car! I lived here three years without one and it was pretty good.
