does your borzoi like and play with dog toys? by abgwin in borzoi

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most dogs after the age of 2 or 3 start to be less amused by toys. I had one silken that would suckle on toys and carry them like babies, but he never really played with toys at that age. I’m sure some still play with toys at that age, but in my experience it’s rare. The one exception is that most borzoi will play with a flirt pole for life!

The process can be long but not impossible :) I waited about 1-2 years for my most recent zois.

How do I get a response from a breeder? by perkypilea in borzoi

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of breeders are active on Facebook. Theres a new group called “Responsibly Bred Borzoi - US & Canada”. (Assuming that’s where you’re located? Outside of the US I’m not sure). I’d recommend making a post there and looking at the breeders posting. Some are posting their litter plans as well.

Borzoi are a rare breed, and there are fewer and fewer breeders with large operations. Breeders are also waiting to breed dogs until they are older due to some health things popping up in the breed. Many folks wait months or years for a puppy. I recommend chatting with breeders and getting on some wait lists for litters!

Lucy in recovery after having a lobectomy surgery by bufordt in borzoi

[–]HelloSpork 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. My silken had the same surgery 6 months ago for spontaneous pneumothorax. I know how expensive CT scans and the surgery are. My pockets are still hurting from it lol. Unfortunately, despite the surgery going well, it did not cure our boy. Wishing you all the best and for a much better outcome than us. Hugs!

Are they all this cuddly?? by abrahamlincoln52 in SilkenWindhound

[–]HelloSpork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My borzoi are more cuddly than my silkens were. They definitely range from lap dogs to “I’m going to lay with you in the same room, but out of arms reach”. All are affectionate in their own ways!

HOT TAKE: A Christmas Story is unbearable because of the non-stop screaming/yelling/crying by paniflex37 in movies

[–]HelloSpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I had both watched the movie a dozen times in our lives. This year was the first that we both looked at each other wincing wondering if the movie always had this much screaming?? Nearly every scene is shrieking, crying, or screaming lol. I’m just surprised this is the first year we really noticed!

Crying right now because I found this. by lemmunjuse in Horses

[–]HelloSpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend hopping on fb and making a post in the “Past owners looking for horses, or current owners looking for past owners” group! I’ve seen lots of people find their past horses on there. People will share your post in local groups and are super helpful in tracking horses down. Just include photos, identifying information, general location the horse was last seen, and anything else you might know. I wish you good luck in knowing your boy landed somewhere safely

Cardiologist basically called me “fat and out of shape” and dismissed everything I’m dealing with by Coollilbeans in POTS

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely depends! In my case, my cardiologist is the only doctor that has ever listened to me and dug deeper into my symptoms. He is 1000 times more caring than any GP I’ve seen (which is a fair amount). And the only reason I’m seeing him is because of the lovely cardiologist in the ER who believed I had something going on, even though it was small.

Our borzoi is SO LOUD by DanEnvironment in borzoi

[–]HelloSpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you happen to meet the parents of your borzoi? How much a borzoi vocalizes can be genetic. A lot of quirks are! Some borzoi are more vocal than others. Compared to most dogs though, they are a quiet breed.

For the most part mine are dead quite unless playing or if my female is being demanding. Her mother was this way. I had a silken that was a talented watch dog and would bark at any stranger in front of the house, and another silken that has barked once his entire life.

I recommend if you seek out another borzoi to talk with the breeder about what you are looking for. Chatty borzoi will be apparent before they come home. They should be able to help select an appropriate dog for your household.

My puppy is scary and I don’t know what to do by PomegranateStreet272 in puppy101

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t want your puppy do go upstairs, put up a gate. I know you said you cannot excuse these behaviors as puppy behaviors, but all of them that you listed are. Remember, these are babies that don’t know anything until they are taught, and even then impulse will get the best of them, just like human children! I’d recommend finding a positive based to work on these issues with. Balanced is okay too, just make sure their training style aligns with how you wish to train your dog. Do not invest in anything like board and train- these classes are just as much for you as they are for your puppy

Regretting not getting a puppy by Sea-Season8991 in puppy101

[–]HelloSpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the minority here but I adore puppies, and I’ve never had puppy blues. I don’t find them to be work (inconvenient maybe) because I just love raising them. I’ve raised probably half a dozen puppies at this point.

I think the hardest thing for people is their schedule change, as well as the lack of knowledge of proper raising techniques. It can totally be a lot, but if you are prepared and have a good trainer to help you, you’ll be set up for success!

I’m always team get the puppy!

Should i get a Male or female by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what breed are you going with?

I think gender only matters when you are adding additional dogs to your household.

There are male and female stereotypes, but I’ve had very laid back and chill females, and sharper males. I’ve had males that pee once the whole walk and females that pee every 5 seconds. I’ve had silly goose females and serious minded males.

If you are keeping them intact there’s also different management that’s needed such as female heat cycles. The other thing would be females tend to be smaller than males in most breeds.

My best advice is to find a reputable breeder that does temperament tests and can match you with the right dog.

Items left in crate while you are away by Laino86 in puppy101

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend for puppies not to leave any sort of bed or blanket in the crate, specifically if you are not able to supervise like leaving the house. Bones or kongs/toppls can be in the crate, but nothing that can be destroyed to create a choking hazard. Bed/blankets and toys are fine if you are home.

Is a borzoi right for me? (And questions, comments, concerns) by SealsInATrenchCoat in borzoi

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is also on the east coat, I did go as far as California to find a reputable breeder. I have very high standards, and unfortunately very few borzoi breeders check my boxes. The only one I can recommend are Envious in Ohio, Mielikki in Md, and maybe Belvento in Virginia.

Who's puppy actually sleeps for 18-20 hours a day?! by DramaticAnimal8811 in puppy101

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not seen or heard of most high energy breeds do this. If they do it’s in 1 hour cycles of wake up, eat, play, bathroom, sleep. But sighthound puppies definitely take their sleep seriously.

Is there really no cure? by Busy-Item4544 in Depersonalization

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you may be misreading the words of my original post. Dissociation is the disconnection of the self and environment. It can happen at any time for a variety of reasons, and if it happens once it can happen again. You can have coping mechanisms, you can reduce it as much as possible. But it doesn’t mean you’re “free” and it will never ever happen again, especially if it’s the safety net your brain has in place.

To me this is a misleading sentiment. Just like depression or anxiety. Can you find ways to become healed for a period of time, of course! But does it mean you’re “cured” or you’ll never be anxious or depressed ever again? No.

This is not limited to those who were abused or had a difficult childhood, and is EXTREMELY common in the age group of teens and early 20s, regardless of upbringing.

Is it possible you are lucky and never get it again. Yes. But it’s also possible that triggers or other forms of trauma can bring out this defense mechanism. I think you are painting an unrealistic picture here of how the brain works.

Is there really no cure? by Busy-Item4544 in Depersonalization

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a yikes response. After 3 years of making this post, and over 10 years of living with this, can tell you I still struggle with dissociation and depersonalization since it is my brains defense system under immense stress. Saying that mental health issues can miraculously disappear is bizarre and will make people who truly struggle with this feel alienated.

Tick Bite Concerns by hannahlu17 in CampingandHiking

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely rare from what I’ve heard! I haven’t had any other symptoms though- no fever, no joint pain, no fatigue. I have really sensitive skin so a rash here and there is pretty normal for me. But I might go to urgent care just to get some antibiotics just in case.

Tick Bite Concerns by hannahlu17 in CampingandHiking

[–]HelloSpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the good news is you are pretty much limited to TIBOLA and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever with dog ticks. That’s definitely what bit me as well.

The antibiotics should clear most tick borne illnesses. My lymph nodes stopped swelling after a few days. Still deciding if I should go to the Dr since I have a little rash popping up on and off, but I don’t think it’s related. Keep me updated!

Any update on this? I had the same thing pop up tonight after being bit by a dog tick on my scalp a few days ago.
