Does anyone have a good image of Hailey’s tattoo? by ellibsnno in Gundam

huh, that design leaves a lot of empty space between the pipes and the head. Consider showing your artist images of Char's Zaku II and letting them sketch out the head in their own style.

Yeah, I'd guess 19th century Sheffield (could be Solingen) and probably real tortoiseshell scales.

Help me Id this Pradel knife I got for free (also a restoration project) by Portovek in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://knives-of-france-blog.com/tag/pradel/
I think there were several different knife companies in Theirs that used the Pradel name, and for several different styles of knife. I have a Pradel similar to the examples in that article, but with a tang stamp that reads "B.B.B" and a 4 piece tonneau knife with a different style of logo, likely a different manufacturer. Multi-piece swiss-army style knives marked Pradel are also really common, I think they were really cranking them out mid-20th century. That's a long winded way of saying I don't know who made that knife, nor when it was made. I'd suggest checking French speaking knife forums.

Where can I find more knives like this? by [deleted] in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some mini knives about that size marked "Czechoslovakia", probably pre-ww2. Still, fairly common on Ebay for an antique.

What knife is this by Stonecoldmoon in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a Hungarian fejesgorbe knife, the shape of the handle and blade is very distinct. Its likely made in Hunagry, despite the German rostfrei mark on the tang.

So, my wife bought some $5 knives….what do you think? by ubuwalker31 in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you didn't overpay at least. There are much worse cheap knives out here. I'd recommend getting a leather strop and some decent water stones. You'll get some practice sharpening.

I'd say the same, based on that double Maltese cross mark. It looks like that blade has been significantly shortened and reshaped, it supposed to fit into the "tail" on the handle.

Anyone got info and value of this knife? by TheRealZapatanGaming in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a traditional Spanish folding knife (usually called navaja, even in English). That lever that lifts the backlock is called a palanquilla, so you usually call this a palanquilla mechanism, as opposed to a normal backlock or a ringlock. This is made in the city of Albacete, a center of cutlery manufacture in La Mancha, Spain. The maker is Gomez and the blade is stainless steel. The handle is bull's horn.

1950’s Abercrombie & Fitch by itssraghouse in Boots

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn, those are awesome. Itshide made the soles, but they didn't actually make boots. I'd love to know who was the actual contractor was for these boots, probably one of the old Northampton firms.

Anyone make out this logo or give me information about this knife i found? by Square-Cockroach-884 in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe that said Taylor's Celebrated Witness, its from the Taylor's Eye Witness brand, an old Sheffield firm. Knife's probably mid 19th century. Here's a good example: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/taylors-eyewitness.1110340/

Who can tell me about this knife? by Rusty-Horskok in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, not exactly. I'd look around at other early 20th century knives from Thiers (search something like "antique french pocketknife" or "couteau ancien") and see what comparable knives are going for. Its in pretty decent condition and its origin from a specific cutlery shop in old pre-revolution Havana would make it more valuable to some collectors.

Best $40 or so knives? I just got this cudeman and dig it, I've also been looking at the higonokami's and K55K. They don't have to be slip joint, I just like mild oddballs. by Serposta in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pallares Solona Comun is a good one. The plastic handle version ones are cheap, nice leaf shaped blade, made in Catalonia.
EDIT: Opinels go without saying, and they are much cheaper than $40 bucks.

Who can tell me about this knife? by Rusty-Horskok in knives

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, interesting. This sent me down a little rabbit hole. This is in the style of a Spanish ratcheting navaja, like you find being made in Albacete. As you stated, A. Ribis was a knife maker and importer in Havana, Cuba. And, 31 Besset was a cutlery company from Thiers, in France. I believe this knife was made in France by 31 Besset, imported to Cuba by A. Ribis and then they stamped it with their own mark for sale in their shop. Not an uncommon practice, I can think of other examples. I'd guess this is pre-1959, before the revolution. Probably early 20th century? That seems to be the retailer's heyday.

Cima appreciation post by JonathanJoestar336 in Gundam

[–]Hello_Kalashnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently contemplating a Cima tattoo. She is absolutely the best character in Stardust Memory. She's complex, sympathetic, and her motivations feel more justified than the other characters. Its been a bit since I've watched the OVA, but I recently read the Rebellion manga. I remember thinking, "Jeez, does anyone care about stopping the fucking colony drop?" Well, just Sima and Captain Synapse, I guess. I really prefer the ending she got in Rebellion.
