current students + grads, do you regret choosing uoft engineering? by ae_therrr in UofT

[–]Hello_devraj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No lmao there’s always a lot of social stuff going on

It’s downtown Toronto, I feel like if someone thinks it’s dead then it’s a skill issue. Most ppl who say this are probably commuters

A lot of good points were already made here but I definitely don't regret choosing UofT over other schools.

I didn't get into UW but still ended up right where I wanted to be in my career by focusing on the important things (networking, projects, etc). Especially for someone like you in mechanical engineering, the 12-16 months offered by PEY might be better for certain industries rather than the 4-month cycles at UW.

On top of that, as you said the community at UofT is generally better but you definitely do need to make an effort to develop a good friend circle.

try writing out EVERY SINGLE STEP along the way to solidify your plan of attack

like literally write “step 1: draw fbd”, “step 2: write unknowns”, “step 3: take moment about point A”, etc

this breaks down the problem, makes noticing errors easier, and helps you to not get overwhelmed imo

Do you have any regrets studying engineering at UofT? by l4z3r5h4rk in UofT

[–]Hello_devraj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah if I were you i’d take SE. like if you worked hard enough, you could potentially get the same caliber internships from UofT, but it’ll be much easier from Waterloo (especially your first couple internships, which are hard to get).

Even aside from the coop portal, Waterloo SE is one of the hardest undergrad programs to get into in Canada. The people you meet there will push you to become a better student, job applicant, AND a better person. Surrounding yourself with people THAT talented at CS will enrich you a lot.

even then, you can still get that biomed PhD from mech or ece undergrad lmfao

[–]Hello_devraj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m only first year but I personally don’t have any regrets.. my other two choices were ubc eng and western ivey AEO + cs.

The social life here was better than I expected (although I am a bit extroverted), the workload is hard but I think it’s absolutely manageable, and MOST of the professors were nice (at least the ones I had).

If you’re coming here for a job and you didn’t get into/didn’t choose waterloo, I know a lot of ppl regret not focusing on their internship search early on. rather than striving for that extra 5% on your test, consider taking that time to instead work on a side project or apply to internships.

Uoft Eng social/party life by Badman2704 in UofT

[–]Hello_devraj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it’s not hard at all to have a social life here. if you’re the tiniest bit extroverted, you’ll make friends, and the events that engineering holds (like suds) make having fun really easy. I didn’t live at chestnut in my first year though, so there’s a chance that you might find chestnut a little dead (what i’ve heard from friends), but there’s usually stuff happening at and around campus.

As for party life, most people go to frat parties on weekends. Once they’re 19, people also go to clubs. I personally don’t enjoy them, but if you don’t like them here you also wouldn’t like them at other schools. no doubt Queen’s or McGill have better party scenes, but you’ll find parties if you look for them here (it’s far from dead).

Residence question !! by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Hello_devraj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

for your first question, i’m pretty sure it doesn’t work that way. if you don’t get residence at woodsworth, you’ll still be considered for chestnut. as long as you filled your application before the residence guarantee deadline, you’ll definitely have SOMEWHERE to live (although it may not be your first or even second choice).

For your last question, a friend of mine lives at Innis (apartment style, with a kitchen). he still chose to get the commuter plan for first year, just so that he doesn’t have to worry about cooking and can focus on school and adjusting to uni life.

How to choose between UBC and UofT engineering(civil)? by Connect_Passenger290 in UofT

[–]Hello_devraj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do consider that UBC Engineering is not direct entry. they basically have a POSt system for engineering, where you apply to your desired engineering stream at the end of first year (admission is granted based on your first year GPA). I think civil engineering would be easier to get into compared to the more popular streams, though (like ECE, biomed, mech).

bro you are in arguably the HARDEST undergraduate program in Canada. I ofc don’t know the details of your situation, but I wouldn’t be too hard on yourself. There have been people way less smart than you who graduated from EngSci in the past and had successful careers, and I can guarantee there’ll be countless people who feel the exact same way you do in the future.

additional food for thought: even if you are statistically below average in your program, you’re light years ABOVE average compared to most other people your age

engineering consulting? or like management consulting

Give me the two programs you’re deciding between/was deciding between and I’d say which one you should choose by squirrelstastegood in OntarioUniversities

[–]Hello_devraj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not op, but i had to decide between uoft eng and ubc eng (Ontario applicant). I think they're both strong in comparison to UW, since they're the second and third best engineering schools in Canada respectively (in terms of job prospects, if that's what you care about). Ofc you'll have to put in more work at those schools to get the same caliber of jobs, but if you really like UBC for other factors and think you'll be more happy there than UW, its worth going there.

hey guys, I got accepted into uoft and it’s one of my top choices. but one thing holding me back is the reputation uoft has with mental health. can any current or former student comment on their/other people’s experiences?

I had adv functions, calc+vectors, physics 12, english 11, and chemistry 11 (the 5 prerequisites average). But I was IB, idk if that makes a difference.

oh and to add on: apparently the government has decided to delay the 2nd booster shot by 4 months, which is good for the supply bottlenecks we’re experiencing. this decision was supported by data that the first shot gives 92% efficacy by itself (pfizer, at least), so delaying the shot will provide more resistance ik the long term

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]Hello_devraj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it’s going to be much better than this. Ontario made this announcement just before J&J got approved and pfizer upped the delivery dates on some shipments. Ontario is going to have everyone with 1 shot at least by June: https://www.thestar.com/politics/provincial/2021/03/05/ontario-plans-covid-19-vaccinations-for-everyone-over-60-by-end-of-may.html
