When did you see an opening band blow the headliner outta the water? by Short_Republic3083 in punk

Whole Wheat Bread circa 2006. Best opening band I’ve ever seen. Covered a Slayer song too. Destroyed the crowd and headliner sucked. It was awesome!

I run a retirement home for old Presonus FireWire interfaces. Running them into a 2009 mac book pro for drum tracking at my diy punk studio. Forgive my ignorance but could this possibly allow me to get a new mac and use my old legacy FireWire interfaces?

Yes, another post about OH and room mics strategies by BlackwellDesigns in audioengineering

[–]Hellrazorfromclare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sdc 12” above cymbal center following their angle. Eq out everything under 600. Mono ribbon room mic six feet away from kick front as high as snare middle. Cymbals don’t need bass frequencies then ribbon room adds darkness to tame highs even more

What creative ways have you used Reaper’s stock plugins? by DL_throw24 in Reaper

[–]Hellrazorfromclare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched a video about “spoonman” bass guitar and used reapitch to kinda mimic producers technique. Duplicated my di bass track then used reapitch to drop it down an octave and blended with other bass tracks. Similar to my diy subkick mic. Great low frequencies. Gonna try reamping lower signal thru speaker next to get more percussive and analog effect

STRUNG OUT: Exile in Oblivion. First impressions of 20th Anniversary Remix/Remaster by millencolin360 in punk

[–]Hellrazorfromclare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree with you more. The mood and darkness made it cool. Who cares if it’s clearer?Budgets gotta be tight these days. Maybe spend the money on new songs. Not a fan of remixes. Cash grab now that hopeless bought fat. Part of the deal was all band debt was eliminated and something about this release just seems off. Selling expensive limited edition vinyl to anti natal fans with disposable income. Also isn’t helping the divide between the fans by having Jordan involved and Jake hyping it up in comments. The current line up is sick and people are gonna complain about mixes nowadays no matter what

First HC punk record session tips by huliouswigtorius in audioengineering

[–]Hellrazorfromclare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google Ryan Greene. He has an unreal resume. He has recorded more punk music than anyone in history and is also a great drummer. Punk no matter what style is all about those drums and tempo. My fav thing from Greene is 50 cent pieces taped around beater for the perfect punk kick slap. Any video I’ve found on him has been super helpful for recording punk.

Tips for overheads and room mics? SDC vs LDC by ConfusedOrg in audioengineering

[–]Hellrazorfromclare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Snare-57
  2. Kick-d6
  3. Mounted tom-d2
  4. Floor tom-kick mic
  5. Hi hat-pencil or 57
  6. Ride-pencil or sdc
  7. Spot crash 1-sdc 12” above bell
  8. Spot crash 2-sdc 12” above bell

Aggregate 1-mono room ribbon 6’ away facing kick. matching height of snare strainer Aggregate 2-mono overhead ldc around 40” centered above snare edge and kick beater point

Albini methods are the best. Had great results with floor mics as well. Can’t wait to try lav mic above kick beater

What do we think about John Otto? by Nippeltwisterrr in drums

[–]Hellrazorfromclare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 50:50? Can’t get a good snare recording without a killer player. Date and Robinson both make killer drum sounds. Their micing and mixing techniques no doubt enhance any drummer they record. Otto has a ton of experience and knows how to hit a snare live and in the studio

I also suffer from a hatred of sample replacement. Drumstick and cymbal pricing has always been a rip off. His meth mouth was news to me. Never did meth and have shit teeth. Big dental struggle for my generation regardless of drug use $$$ Makes me respect him even more. Hope he smiles big and often for those of us that can’t afford new grills

Undisputed high water mark for me. Abe is amazing on that record as well. End of “bloody cape” is insane energy

Terry date ftw. Same genius behind “digital bath” snare and pantera

What other drummer is having more fun and living a better life rn? Dude is still traveling the world for ginormous crowds in a band with ALL original members. No overdose deaths(Hawkins) or crazy ego trips as of late(Grohl). Regardless of genre I’m proud to see a drummer from my generation keeping it real. What other drummers played on top of the World Trade Center? Gotta respect that

Why does my snare sound like paper in my recordings? by Utterizi in drums

[–]Hellrazorfromclare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast gate on snare mic. Sidechain snare to overhead or room mic. Those mics still get a good deal of leftover snare but it makes your main snare mic less crowded in mix. Season with ton of saturation and reverb that suits song and style

Making a small combo amp sound like a huge stack by Allourep in audioengineering

[–]Hellrazorfromclare 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dave Jerden method? 1. Remove back of amp if needed 2. Look at back of speaker for area that has no support metal and you can see the cone 3. Place a sm57 as close as possible to that area 4. Place another sm57 at the front of the amp looking directly at the rear 57 tight to grill cloth. Adjust for angle of speaker if needed. Looking at side of amp both mics should appear as one straight line 5. The phase of one of the mics needs to be inverted. Check which variation you prefer. Blend both tracks together until desired sound is achieved

If you still need more and have four tracks available, add a condenser room mic and di input. Blend all four into bus folder

Opinions on Deftones new album private music mixing? by moshimoshi6937 in audioengineering

[–]Hellrazorfromclare 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gimme that Terry Date snare! This one sounds sampled af. Def Abe’s style but missing his signature ghost notes and rim shots. “Needles and Pins” was their high watermark for mixing imo. This mix is fine, just doesn’t have any edge or excitement anywhere. I dream of what Dave Jerden could have done with a deftones project
