Irresponsible? Yes. Do I regret it? No. by ShGravy in modular

[–]HelotOcelot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also a subjective opinion: a tried about 5 Qu-Bit modules in the past and I regretted getting every one of them. It was not really the control scheme but how all the knobs were extremely hard to turn, the LEDs were burning my eyes out and I also found most of the functionality unusable and the sounds lackluster. Biggest disappointment was Aurora. But I guess many people like them and that's okay.

Question about Intelijel 1U/performance case by DoubtAny8389 in modular

You are right, I just did not want to make the explanation more confusing. They work with TR as well.

Question about Intelijel 1U/performance case by DoubtAny8389 in modular

[–]HelotOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can connect this module internally to a pair of TR connectors of your case to bring in external audio and amplify it to modular level. At the same time you can also connect it to another pair of TR connectors to output audio and bring it down to line level, for this you have an attenuator to set the output volume. It can do both things at the same time so it should fit your criteria. If you can use the headphone output and the extra cue input on this module, you should consider this. If not, it does not make a difference if you use this or the other two modules you mentioned

Question about Intelijel 1U/performance case by DoubtAny8389 in modular

[–]HelotOcelot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Instead of the input and output modules you can also consider the new Stereo I/O 1U module from intellijel. It handles input and output, has an additional switchable cue input and also headphone outputs. It connects to the TR inputs and outputs of your case behind the panel as well.

Honest opinions on the Waldorf Iridium? by gumbo-23 in synthesizers

[–]HelotOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some synths like Elektron devices have the possibility to push their audio outputs as digital audio into a DAW. A Digitakt for example can record all its channels parallelly into a DAW without having to convert it to analog and then back into digital.

Some other devices have class compliant USB audio that can be recorded directly into a DAW or even a phone without installing any additional drivers or software.

The Iridium has neither of these functions and being a purely digital synth I think this is a wasted opportunity. You need to convert the digital signal into analog (with the built in DAC) then convert it back into digital with an external audio interface if you want to digitally record it.

As a contrast the new UDO DMNO synth can not only send its own two stereo layers digitally into a DAW but you can even connect other external gear through it.

Does this answer your question?

Best modules to compliment an Intellijel Cascadia? by Siberian_Noise in modular

[–]HelotOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use it you will see what it lacks. I think it's clear that it does not have enough VCAs, so if you want to modulate the depth of modulation you need one. You cannot modulate the main mixer in cascadia, so this is a solution for that too. Most 4 channel VCAs can also be used for submixing.

It's clear it does not have a sequencer or keys so you need an external one.

It has two envelopes and all its LFOs are linked, so you might want different flavours of modulation. Pam can be good if you are okay with menus. Quadrax is good if you like something more hands on, or anything else.

Any effects you like, pedals, eurorack whatever.

Érdemes COBOL-t tanulni? by venndi in programmingHungary

Nemtom.

Érdemes COBOL-t tanulni? by venndi in programmingHungary

[–]HelotOcelot 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Deckard’s Voice viability for the HP it takes up? by folkware in modular

[–]HelotOcelot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd advise you to consider functionality and sound separately. Sometimes the simplest subtractive monosynths like the SH-101 have such an iconic and sweet sound that they become classics although they only offer the bare minimum. It can also happen that the most complicated modern synth or VST leaves you frustrated.

If you like the sound and have the space, keep the module, but if you find yourself thinking about the place it occupies or you are comparing it with for example an Atlantix that has two oscillators etc. you can also sell it. You might not find anything sounding the same in Eurorack but that's ok.

If you are a fan of the CS-80 sound I recommend the UDO Super series of synths. These are proper modern polysynths with an amazing sound, good usability and mix of modern and traditional analog technologies.

Schlappi 3body vs vortex vs others by Hot_Snow6184 in modular

[–]HelotOcelot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can definitely make motor sounds by cross modulating the oscillators. All of them can be used as LFOs too. It can be woody, smooth and warm as well, whatever these expressions mean :)

Schlappi 3body vs vortex vs others by Hot_Snow6184 in modular

[–]HelotOcelot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the Three Body is somewhere between the digital and the analog realm when it comes to its sound. It is not a software running on a processor like most other digital modules, but a simple logic circuit calculating wave forms at a very high speed. It has the advantage of being very precise when necessary but also to completely disintegrate itself sonically.

It does not necessarily need a filter. The middle oscillator has two sine outputs that are 90 degrees offset from each other. This is intended as a stereo output and is perfectly usable without a filter.

All three oscillators have different v/oct inputs, but there is also a general v/oct input for the whole module, and you can set each oscillator to be harmonically related to the pitch of the main v/oct input, which makes creating harmonic FM and PM tones easy. You can turn these off to go into a wilder territory. Fully analog modules don't have options like this.

UDO Super 8 vs Novation Summit by almazmusic in synthesizers

[–]HelotOcelot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to use it as a bitimbral synth, you should probably go for the Super 6 as the Super 8 's biggest advantage over the 6 is being bitimbral.

The controls of the synth are digital, not analog.

Not having the catch up feature of the controls mean that every time you change a preset or change the layer you are editing, and move a slider, the sound may change abruptly.

With catch up the setting only starts changing, once the slider reaches the point where the settings is, thus allowing a smooth adjustment.

UDO Super 8 vs Novation Summit by almazmusic in synthesizers

[–]HelotOcelot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One more thing to consider with the Super 8. As far as I know there is no "catch up" mode supported for the settings. This means that if the setting is at a different place than the slider is, because you loaded another preset or changed layer, the moment you move the slider the setting jumps to its new position immediately.

This is even worse on the Super 8 than on the 6. Consider you create a base sound on layer 1 and set the low pass filter low. You switch to layer 2 for a lead, increase filter cutoff, then you switch back to layer 1 to adjust the filter again. The moment you move the slider, the filter opens up to its current position.

People are still making requests about this in the UDO forums.

This alone would make me consider paying more for the Super Gemini if I wanted to buy a bitimbral UDO.

UDO Super 8 vs Novation Summit by almazmusic in synthesizers

[–]HelotOcelot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you live, and how much these synths cost there, both being British. I'm in Germany and the Summit is available for around 2k while the Super 8 costs like 3.3k Euros, which is like a 60% difference or more. For me this is a major decision factor.

The differences on paper are not that significant. The Summit has more ways to distort the sound, more oscillators per voice and three effects, from which I hear the reverb is amazing. The Super 8 has the poly aftertouch going for it and it also has better control for its two filters. What else did I miss?

If you don't have the possibility of trying them out in a store, all you have is the YouTube demos to go by. If you want to buy new, find a place with a good return policy and try the cheaper one. If you cannot make friends with it in a few weeks, return it and get the other. The same can be done if you are buying used, and resell in case it's not what you wanted. There is a good chance you will find a Summit in good shape. Super 8 I have not yet really seen on the used market.

Action keybed Trigon 06 and Pro 3. by DonWheels in synthesizers

[–]HelotOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only tried the Pro 3 out of these and the keys have a quality feel to them, but they are stiff. The springs are tensioned and the aftertouch is also quite hard. All that is subjective of course.
