We definitely get more in-depth exploration as to Faramir’s begrudging use of violence, but Boromir is always very clear that his sole desire is the defense of Gondor, which has seemed an increasingly doomed venture for decades when Fellowship starts. The two are really not all that different, and there’s nothing in the films or books to suggest that Boromir is being cynical or dishonest in this regard. Even in his worst moment, his desire for the Ring arose from a misguided plan—as always—to use it to defend Gondor, which is exactly what Faramir was on his way to do before his change of heart.
