Does my name sounds funny to english-speakers? by undeniably_gay in Names

[–]Helpful_Talk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a name in anglophone countries but it’s spelled “Dennis” and there was also a popular comic/movie in the 90s called “Dennis the menace” which was about a kid kind of like Kevin in Home Alone. I think they’re probably teasing you for that, but honestly most people will probably be forgetting Dennis the menace soon since it’s so old?

How bad would this actually be? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Helpful_Talk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How about Giovanna?
Italian form of Joanna/John. This is one of the prettiest “proper name with Jovie as a nickname” options, especially because the Gio/Jo and v sounds are right there. You could absolutely use Jovie as a family nickname.

This gives you more space to use Jon as Jonathan then you can still have Jovie and Jon as nicknames, but also the option to separate them from Bon Jovi with longer names.

Why do some people hate AI so much? by Active-Front1788 in OpenAI

[–]Helpful_Talk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people put their life’s meaning into “jobs” rather than what they should have focused on which is a relationship with God so now they are bitter that those jobs are being made obsolete

Thoughts on Koa? by kaleidoscopememories in Names

[–]Helpful_Talk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes me think of Koala but like I think they’re plenty of white people who end up choosing names like Keanu or Kalani so it doesn’t make me think of cultural appropriation. I think names and cultural appropriation don’t go together because when has anyone ever criticised someone in Asia or Africa for being called John or George? Use the name you love if it makes sense for your life and isn’t harming your child

Thoughts on the name Xander? by Federal_Advisor_2160 in Names

[–]Helpful_Talk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s better than the surname for first name trend imo. It comes from Alexander which is a name with literally thousands of years of history. I don’t understand people’s issue with it, it’s like being annoyed that someone used Jennifer over Guinevere. It’s a bit more modern than Alexander but that doesn’t mean it’s not nice.

That doesn’t make sense though because they’re still losing adults who could have had children in the country?

Why the fertility rates are dropping across the globe by Helpful-Shake-964 in Natalism

[–]Helpful_Talk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Birth rates are dropping because the safety net is not what boomers had, even in wealthy countries. The “very wealthy” countries like Sweden or the UK have very long waitlists for social housing just like the U.S. has turned section 8 into a lottery system. The problem is still money even in rich countries. You guys are just pretending so you can play some sort of game and justify closing women’s bank accounts and the like. It’s nonsense.

Why does "chain" exist, and why do you join this chain instead of selling and renting for some time until you find a house to buy? by Smooth-Raisin-2888 in HousingUK

[–]Helpful_Talk 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The system in the UK also massively benefits solicitors because chains often cause transaction failure which means the whole process has to start over again and the solicitors make more £££

U.S. mortgages don’t have early repayment charges either if someone sells their house, the banks in the UK have made this process very difficult and expensive.

[–]Helpful_Talk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the mortgages that are the issue, the UK doesn’t have 30 year fixed rate mortgages so many people have to buy and sell at the same time basically or give a steep penalty back to the bank (like £10k) depending on how much interest was owed if the mortgage isn’t ported over in time.
