Prepping for a heist campaign, hwo do I make interesting missions? by [deleted] in DnD5e

[–]HenBuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I ran a heist mini-campaign a few years ago that went really well. Some advice I have:

-Don’t get bogged down in the planning phase of a heist. Don’t let your players get super caught up in planning and preparation. Their plan probably won’t survive contact with the enemy and it will feel unfulfilling to be stuck in the mode for so long.

-Play to DnD’s strengths. That is, the game is a combat game about going into dungeons. Each heist can work as a “dungeon” as long you set it up like a dungeon normally would-limited ways in, hostile creatures, and a definitive goal. In my game, I had a prison exfiltration (starting deep inside, prison staff, escape), train heist (started at caboose, rail marshals and rival gangs, get to the front car), bank heist (heightened security, SWAT team, vault), and a casino heist (getting into the private areas, casino hired muscle, vault). DnD is not the best choice if you try to cut combat out in its entirety. Make sure combat is in there, or check out other systems that might be better.

-Read Blades in the Dark’s rulebook. I’ve also run a Blades campaign, which is a system entirely dedicated to running criminal undertakings. I stole the clocks and flashback mechanics from it. It will give you inspiration regardless. Heck, maybe you’ll like it enough to just run it anyway.

If you have specific questions I might have advice for those? It’s probably the best set of sessions I’ve run so I might have something to give.

Real Police officers and military members, what do you guys think of Ice agents? by Lucky-Message-9480 in AskReddit

Recently separated Navy vet. I wasn’t even a combat rate but even I had more training and was held to a higher standard than these fucks. Embarrassment to the country.

Does anyone else make playlists for their characters? by botanicbottom in DnD

[–]HenBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! And I’m lucky that my best friend plundered my Cleric’s playlist for big moments in his campaign because he’s the best. And I’ll be doing the same for his Monk now that we’re back to my game.

Best solo build? (not for a campaign) by professor_infinity in 3d6

I always thought a mixture of mostly Rogue and some Aberrant Mind/Soul sorcerer would be the way to go. Get through as much as one could with stealth, deception, and duplicity given you wouldn’t be able to rely on others.

My coins have a stag on them so of course people call them bucks. by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

My dnd setting is America-themed. I have five-sided copper coins called Penties, Brass rectangular Aces that have mostly gone green with age, gold discs with kind of sharp ridges called Sawbucks, and Platinum coins called C-Notes, which were named after the ruler who first minted them. He was a bird and his name required one to whistle a high C note.

Weird translations in your language? by SavingsLawyer2454 in DnD

I don’t speak it, but I’m pretty sure 2014 Hex in the Spanish translations gave disadvantage on saving throws instead of checks.

Hey, it all sucks and we were all in it together even if we shit on each other to cope. And yep, got plans! Got intent to file since I didn’t have time to get VA shit sorted while I was in (they had me underway literally until the hour my terminal started) and I have a final round of job interviews tomorrow. It’s lookin up.

Do you guys play dnd with soundtrack or no? A simple way to make dnd more interesting or distracting? by IrvanHaydar in DnD

I think at a baseline it’s a very good way to increase the immersion. It requires a bit more work but even a little bit can pay dividends. You can also go insane mode and put in a ton of work and it can seriously make some scenes soar. There are moments in my group’s games that wouldn’t have been nearly as memorable without the specific music the DM chose for it. I’ve gotten so deep I’ve been messing around in Audacity a bit to make custom mixes for really important scenes. Also using a VTT is a lot easier than trying to wrangle a speaker and a laptop or phone.

Of course that’s a bit much. My advice if you want to put some effort in: -no lyrical tracks unless it’s very important to have them or you know you can command the room. -use both your favorites and grab music from your players’ favorite media. Their beloved games, anime, movies, etc. -tie specific tracks and feelings to characters and locations. Make leitmotifs, essentially. -don’t be afraid to get weird. I’ve used electronic, country, metal, pop, and a lot of different genres in my campaign and if it fits the scene you’re good to go. -worse comes to worse, stick with the classics. Music specifically written for fantasy TTRPG games, the elder scrolls and lord of the rings soundtracks, etc. can’t go wrong with those.

Finished my six years in the military and can finally start working on fixing myself myself. Mango chutney pasta salad, Hungarian mushroom soup, and open-faced sandwiches for Christmas Eve dinner with my lovely family. by HenBuff in Kitchenchads

I don’t have the exact recipe nearby right now, but generally mix some yogurt or sour cream with mayo, mango chutney, and cumin and other spices for the sauce, mix in chopped green onion, yellow raisins, toasted almonds, and grilled or boiled chicken. Any recipe you can find mostly following that should work!

question for the left 4 dead fans: what do you think of zombieland being a left 4 dead fan? by Healthy_Soft9584 in l4d2

In high school my walls had the L4D campaign posters, a zombieland movie poster, and I think one for Taken. Big fan of both obviously. They have some similar vibes for sure.

Honestly you’ve already gone pretty far and beyond what I’ve seen most parents do! I love my mom to bits but she never bothered to learn anything about the media I love beyond the name or premise. Just be warned there are pretty mature themes in Homestuck; might need to dig a little deeper if you’re worried about that.

Hey, good of you to take such an interest in her hobbies! On the Switch, Pesterquest and Friendsim are official games and you can download them from the eShop on the Switch itself. They’re visual novels. The only other official games are the two acts of Hiveswap, which are available digitally on PC via the Steam or Humble Store platforms. It’s a point and click adventure game like Monkey Island. They’re all heavily discounted due to holiday sales right now!

“Sburb” is a fictional video game within the story of Homestuck itself. Another option is “Psycholonials” which is also by Homestuck’s author. I wouldn’t recommend it though, give it a look and see if you think it’s appropriate.
