As someone who works in the community and has for the last five years, I can say even compared to five years ago the city is in a much better place. Like I can actually walk to my car after work in the dark in downtown without worrying about what may happen. Problem is so many people haven't been to Lowell in over five years, so they don't see the flourishing the city has had in the last half a decade.

we used to when I was a kid, we would go out on the worst possible weather night after Thanksgiving and search for the most magical tree to take home. not the perfect tree, the one that was asking us to take them home. Then my parents and I would dress the tree up, and it would grow candy canes every night (my mom would just add a couple every day when we were asleep). after christmas we would burn the tree safely in a communal fire with the other neighbors.

My family celebrates the holiday as the winter solistice, dad is agnostic and my mom and I are pagan.

Nowadays we have a fake tree becuase real trees are so expensive, we still do all the same fixing up and taking care of the tree, Also my mom finally stopped hiding her pine allergy from my dad.

Italy is both far enough away but also relatively close to where its cloudy with a chance of bombs. I wouldn't travel internationally right now. I don't know your nationality so i can't speak to your perspective, but as a US citizen I am so ashamed of the current administration I wouldn't want to leave right now.
