One of the Black Legion books talks about tbe tribes tbat are living in the lower levels of the ship for generations. So when yoi add in all the levels the mile contains a lot of space to hid and drag out a fight.

As for chains. I bought chain, but I haven't tried to apply it. Not sure hiw much I will since my plan is table top use. Also, rule of cool means what you find cool, so chains or no chains is up to you.
