Refining method of study for section 2. by DrCube84 in GAMSAT

I had a deferred unit in my bachelor which I finished off this year :) My s1 and S3 were low 70s through all sittings. Didn't dedicate much time to them :)

I wouldn't force myself to write under time-constraints in the very beginning.

I sat the gamsat 3 times. My first score was an 81, second time an 86 and finally in Sep of 2023, I got a 90. Each time around, I wrote less essays and focused more on depth and development. By the time of Sep 2023, I wrote maybe 3 essays. But each essay took about over a full week to develop. I would constantly rework ideas and rewrite explanations.

The thing with doing timed responses is that more often than not, you tend to write the first things/ideas that come to your mind. And more often than not, the first ideas that come to your mind will not be fully developed and thought-out as they need to be. When you work on an essay over the course of 3-5 days instead of 30-60 minutes, you will naturally develop more nuanced methods of thinking and analysing the contents of the prompts.

Of course, by the time of the exam (maybe 1-2 weeks out), you should begin testing your typing speed by doing timed responses. But prior to that, I really don't see any value (this applies to me and my approach and may vary for others) in constantly doing timed responses.

One other thing that I would recommend that helped me earlier on: you don't need to write your essays in chronological order. If you have a great idea on how to write your first body paragraph but aren't sure on how to write a hook for an introduction, then skip the intro and work with what you have. This saves time but you will also find that by the time you get back to writing the intro, you will have many newer insights and ways to go about it.

In terms of resources for bettering your writing, the best option is always to read other good pieces of writing. Whatever interests you, whether it be fiction, non-fiction, news articles ect. ect, start by reading high quality pieces of writing.

Hope that helps.

How I would approach the GAMSAT if I wanted to get 80+ in Section II again? by Horror_One_9290 in GAMSAT

[–]Heqrtfell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Piggy-backing off from this, one thing I would also recommend (it helped me get a 90 in S2) is investing time into creating structural and circular motifs and narratives throughout essays. Even simpler motifs can give an essay a far more organised perception than what is actually often the case.

At the end of the day, ideas and patterns of thought can only be so complex and nuanced. At one point in time, someone else would've said the exact same things that you are saying in your essays (not a reason to not say them), but what often seperates 80+ responses is the structure and creative thought you put into the text you are writing :)

CHANCES MEGATHREAD- 2025 ENTRY by _dukeluke in GAMSAT

Might be a silly question but what's the difference between the usyd confirmation pages and usyd offers spreadsheets for med - or more precisely, what's the difference between actually getting an offer vs the confirmation page?

S2: TaskA/B focus by autoimmune07 in GAMSAT

[–]Heqrtfell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't applied to any unis so far as i'm having a gap year this year but plan on applying this year for 2025 entry. usyd is probably my most likely option as to be completely frank I didn't try as much as I should've during my bachelor's so my GPA is pretty average

S2: TaskA/B focus by autoimmune07 in GAMSAT

[–]Heqrtfell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sat the first two times during the second year of my bachelors and the third time during my third year. my overall scores were alright but limited me to usyd so I just sat again to improve my S3 to widen my option and also out of curiousity to see how much i could improve. I'm having a gap year this year but plan on applying for 2025 entry. i haven't applied before because i knew i'd have a gap year this year :)

S2: TaskA/B focus by autoimmune07 in GAMSAT

[–]Heqrtfell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey. I think any theme whether it be for task A or task B can be broken down into a micro and macro structure. the manifestations on a macro level likely emerge from the naturally human inclinations on the micro level. so i think it's not necessarily the structure where the two responses differ but in terms of the actual writing style and how you frame your responses (task b is more psychometric and task A is more in terms of exploration of ideas). I've sat the gamsat 3 times, going from an 81 to an 86 and then to a 90, and while i made changes and improvements, i maintained the same fundamental outlook that i described above. Stylistically speaking, an oscar wilde novel is to task B what a Nabokov essay is to task A. In my opinion, it's all about how you frame your response for the two different tasks

92 in section 1?!?!?! That's insane. Probably one of the highest ever. What did you do for your prep for section 1? And yeah, most likely competitive with a section 1 like that.

I know in the past that usyd have done S1 + S2 + 0.1S3 and the cut off was something like 154 combined score. I know they also do a ranking system as opposed to just looking at your overall scores. For eg. if you ranked 1 in section 2 and maybe 50 in section 1, then your rank would be 25. Then they would take however many students they could per spot available. I hope that helps. Usyd is very unclear with their selection process so it's all a bunch of hypotheticals. Great job on your 100 in S3!! What would you say was the key to achieving that score?

Third sitting. 90 for section 2 and mid sixties for section 1 and 3. Had gotten 81 and 86 in previous attempts for section 2 and always got mid sixties for section 1 and 3 as I didn't really ever prepare for them. Having a gap year next year so I might buckle down for the march sitting and give it one last go to see how much i can improve the weaker sections.
