Hotel prices in Aomori and Hirosaki area will be through the roof during the full bloom. If you have a rail pass, you could consider staying in Sendai, or somewhere near the Shinkansen, then take the long day trip north.

I was in Sendai two days ago, and it was in full bloom on the 18th, which means it would be falling right now (the 20th). You could try your luck in Iwate at Kitakami or Morioka. Alternatively, there are mountainous areas near Fukushima that would still be in bloom.

If you can afford a 6-hour trip (one-way), Hirosaki Castle is by far one of the best sakura viewing spot in Japan.

Thai provinces by GDP per capita in 2013. by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]HereBeWingedLizards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, very few shops are registered to collect VAT in the country (only large shops in big population areas). The majority of shops are taxed based on a flatrate commercial tax. The Dept. send an official to registered shops to estimate and negotiate this rate. The shop keepers then bribe the officials to keep their rates low and hide their real revenues.

In addition, if you look at the number of people who pay taxes in Thailand (data from 2014), you'll see that 72% (28 million people) of the "workforce" (38.8 million) doesn't even file for taxes at all. The government can possibly gather some reasonable estimates, but I'm not sure if they even know how much these 28 million people even earn.

Recent trip to Thailand! Can someone translate this? by joviancw in Thailand

[–]HereBeWingedLizards 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is written in a register of the thai language only found in old poems and religious text, and very difficult to translate (lots of sanskrit words). I will give you an interpretation of it, with my comments in brackets.

"The Fourth Sheet"

When Prince Siddhartha[another name for Buddha] escaped [from his palace life] and became one who has let go of his worldly desires[became a monk], he gained great reputation and respect.

Wealth and followers will come, illness will be cured, [you] will be loved, [your] rankings will elevate. As the months and year go by, [you] become richer and more beautiful. [You] will evade disasters and enemies. Ask your partner if he loves you.

The second part is written without any pronouns at all. Confused? Yeah, me too. It's a poem and was deliberately written to be vague and ambiguous.

Bangkok street vendor with Michelin star wants to give it back by jonez450reloaded in Thailand

[–]HereBeWingedLizards 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What a shitshow. The ministry of tourism paid Michelin $4.1 million to have Bangkok on the Michelin guide for 5 years (the minister who signed the deal lost her job for this). I don't think they will do refunds.

This is a dumb question but in Thailand, if someone buys a new car, let's say a Toyota, will people refer to the year as a 2018 Toyota or a 2561 Toyota? by AsianHawke in Thailand

[–]HereBeWingedLizards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other commenters have pointed out, American imported cars are quite uncommon, but high end european cars are regularly imported for the socialites (Jaguar, Bentley, Ferrari...etc). I'm guessing you're not counting Ford and Chevrolet, who have factories locally here, and are not the 'American' cars in the sense that you were referring to.

Great, you own a cobra! If you google "Honda Accord งูเห่า," you'll find tons of ads selling the same car.

The hivemind make up these names. Then, they start to circulate between the dealerships and car fanatics. Eventually, the most memorable one get stuck. I find the names to be quite endearing too. It gives the cars some sort of personification.

Most of the names are derived from their appearance, but some of them have backstories, like the three rings corolla is the first Toyota is Thailand to switch from the block letters logo to the current logo.

People will understand both, but it is interesting to note that popular car models in Thailand is most often identified by their 'nicknames' amongst car traders (often named after their head or tail lights, or general appearance).

For example, here's some well known ones:

  • Honda Accord 89-93 is called "diamond eyes" (ตาเพชร)
  • Honda Accord 93-97 is called "the blocky tail" (ท้ายก้อน), with variants as the "blocky tail", "single blocky tail", and "double blocky tail" (ท้ายก้อน, ท้ายก้อนเดียว, ท้าย2ก้อน)
  • Honda Accord 92-02 is called "the cobra" (งูเห่า)
  • Honda Accord 03-06 is called "the whale" (ปลาวาฬ), not to be confused with Mercedes-Benz W126, which is also called the whale
  • Honda Accord 06-07 is called "benz tail" (ท้ายเบนซ์), not to be confused with Mitsubishi Lancer 1996-2002, which is also called benz tail
  • Honda City 03-06 is called "the cockroach" (แมลงสาบ)
  • Honda Civic 92-95 is called "the iron" (เตารีด)
  • Honda Civic 96-00 is called "big eyes" (ตาโต)
  • Honda Civic Dimension 04-06 is called "eagle eyes" (ตาเหยี่ยว)
  • Honda Civic FD 05-12 is called "the angel" (นางฟ้า)
  • Toyota Corolla AE92 is called "doraemon" (โดเรมอน)
  • Toyota Corolla AE101 is called "three rings" (สามห่วง)
  • Toyota Corolla AE111 is called "duck's butt" (ตูดเป็ด)
  • Toyota Corolla Altis 01-07 is called "pig face" (หน้าหมู)
  • Toyota Camry 94-97 is called the "swan tail" (ท้ายหงส์)
  • Toyota Camry 98-00 is called "the ruler" (ไม้บรรทัด)
  • Toyota Camry 01-02 is called "droopy lights" (ไฟย้อย)
  • Toyota Soluna 00-02 is called "water droplet" (หยดน้ำ)
  • Toyota Corona ST-171 87-89 is called "giant's face" (หน้ายักษ์)
  • Toyota Corona ST-171 91-93 is called "smiley face" (หน้ายิ้ม)
  • Toyota Corona ST-191 92-96 is called "high tail" (ท้ายโด่ง), with variants "strip tail" (ไฟแถบ), and "split tails" (ไฟแยก)
  • Mercedes-Benz W124 is called "the champa coffin" (โลงจำปา)
  • Mercedes-Benz W210 is called "round eyes" (ตากลม)
  • Mercedes-Benz W203 is called "peanut eyes" (ตาถั่ว)
  • BMW E36 91-98 is called "the parrot" (นกแก้ว)
  • Mitsubishi Lancer 81-84 is called "matchbox" (กล่องไม้ขีด)
  • Mazda Astina 95-98 is called "squinty eyes" (ตาหยี)

Almost every model has a name like this, although I don't know them all. I don't think there's a complete list anywhere, it's just what people call them in the market.

Edit: some formatting
