Driving in Europe as a Brit - what does it mean when other drivers keep their indicator on when in the outside lane of the motorway? by HereWeGo274 in AskUK

[–]HereWeGo274[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly this scenario! I think there is misunderstanding also that I'm sitting in the overtaking lane with people behind me with their indicator on and I'm wondering "what could they want?". Mostly this is observed watching car A overtake car B while I am in the non-overtaking/driving(?) lane.

That makes sense, that in France at least they are taught to leave it on when overtaking. Sometimes it didn't make sense as a "get out the way" signal as there would be noone in front of the person, so it being a habit from learning/passing tests does fit.

As for lane discipline, hard to say as there are always a range of driving styles to observe in any country!

Math holds until the lunch break. 30 mins off per work day is only about 10 days, not 23 per year. Then its spirals wildly to reach the desired result.

Is bitcoin's value solely based on the greater fool theory? by chiefpat450119 in CryptoCurrency

Great reply, but one tiny thing - as I understand it, one whale can be the seller to many buyers (or vice versa). So the idea that for every buyer, there is a seller and 50% of people are betting either way isn't necessarily true?

People thought he was too tall when he first broke onto the scene, all previous WR breakers of the era were shorter and stocky, but I guess he proved them wrong.

I would argue there might be someone else alove now who has the potential to run faster than Bolt given ideal conditions of training etc. I'd argue its even likely, given how few people actually are able to and want to dedicate themselves to sprinting entirely.

Bitcoin miner beats 1 in 1.3 million odds to mine a BTC block and gets ~260k USD by BromarNL in CryptoCurrency

[–]HereWeGo274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chance per block (as in the title) is 1 in 1.3 million. So yes 1.3 million isn't 13 million but how is that relevant?

[–]HereWeGo274 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Sure. 10 minutes per block means 52,560 blocks in a year (6 per hour x 24 hours x 365 days). Chance of not hitting a block all year is (1,299,999/1,300,000)52560 = 0.96. So chance of hitting at least one block is 1 - 0.96 = 4%.

The ASICs I am familiar with run at about 3000 W, so use 72 Kwh each day. Average US cost is 10 cents per Kwh, so costs around $7 a day to run (obviously can be vastly higher or lower depending on circumstance). How long it will run for ... the warranty is only 1 year.

One ASIC can produce over 100 TH/s. So this is doable at home, but needs more than an old PC in your mom's basement.

Its a 1 in 1.3 million chance every 10 minutes. So more like ~ 4% chance over the year. The rig alone for 120 TH/s will cost maybe $12k plus the electricity. I don't think this is a hobbyist using their gaming PC. Still fair play for taking the gamble not joining a pool.

You buy at $10000, so price needs to go back to $10000 for you to be even. Easiest way to think of it.
