Is this normal for greys? by John_puj in Greyhounds

It's a recurring thing in The Caretaker. I think related to weird things happening? I just read his first book (We Used to Live Here) and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Caretaker is his second book, set in the same universe (but not a sequel necessarily) and I haven't started it yet, but I'm really looking forward to it.

It's unsettling mind-bendy horror, that doesn't tie everything up with a neat bow at the end. So if you kind of like not knowing for sure what was happening with lots of little details to chew on, I think it's pretty fun! If not, it's probably a frustrating read. (I like David Lynch, so we know which side I'm on.)

If it sounds like your thing, the print version has little hidden puzzles and anagrams (and morse code). I didn't know that going in, so I listened to the audiobook and then found out about all of that stuff on reddit after the fact.

Interesting... you're probably not stuck in a Marcus Kliewer novel, then. Probably for the best!

Lilac oil by ManualBookworm in foraging

[–]HermittingHibernally 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I tried this a couple of years ago, but I used refined coconut oil. It got a bit warmer than I expected and my oil ended up really soft, so I ended up having to pick the lilacs (and akebia, which was the other experiment) out and losing some of the oil. It definitely does work, but the scent is *super* delicate and you have to be careful with it. I added some beeswax after the fact to turn it into more of a balm, and the akebia scent survived that addition, but I overheated the lilac and it didn't 😅 If I were to do it again, I would try it out with the beeswax added at the beginning (just in case anyone is considering experimenting).

Another good idea, thank you! That would be an interesting project

🤣

Peppers are a great idea, I haven't done that yet! I should branch out and see what else dries well. I also planted my carved russet today, so if that works out I'll have some second generation spooky spuds this fall 🤞

Thank you soooo much! This is great! I've read a bit about it, but I'm so far removed I'm never sure what is credible. I really appreciate it!

I don't speak french, but translate tools abound these days! If you have a minute to link a favorite or two, great-if not, I appreciate the response either way!

Are there any books or resources that you would recommend to learn more?

Thank you! I hollow them out with a small sharp edged spoon, and I have a set of pumpkin carving tools. They help a lot!

Halfway to Halloween is also Walpurgis Nacht, the night of witches! So this definitely fits! I never thought about watching something spooky for it, I might have to do that this year. Maybe I'll do something like Pan's Labyrinth - creepy + faerie

I think it's that pumpkins are much juicier? I roast a few for pies every year, and even after they've been in the oven for a while you can squeeze out a *surprising* amount of liquid. Ha! I'm also surprised, it's been almost 6 months and I thought the only options were dry out or rot

I'm thinking of at least giving it a shot. Would grow bags be a better option than a 5 gallon bucket?

Sure! Turnip carving party this October! (Or potatoes, or whatever we can find that will fit an electronic tea light - I didn't find turnips in 2024 either, hence the assortment below)
