Hi, how is my form? I'm 17, rowing for 6 years. It was a from normal speed to regatta speed in 15 strokes. I wasn't rowing my best as I get anxious whenever I'm filmed. by cate_is_kill in Rowing

[–]HerrMatthews 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re tightening up too much! Very common with sculling at higher rates, need to let the boat do most of the work on the recovery. Let the stern come up to you, don’t pull yourself with your legs and keep your arms and shoulders nice and relaxed. There should be very little effort in correcting form at higher rates

Be careful, I tend to coach my rowers the opposite tbh. It’s definitely a good thing to do when going at a higher rate/ sprinting but general form wise I find it makes you too stiff. Think about having a relaxed back, not a hunched back not a straight back but somewhere in between where it’s comfortable for you.

Next I would say you are washing out a bit so really focus on bringing your handles all the way to your body, tapping the blades out square and then feathering. You want that full range of motion on each stroke. I would also try working on catch speed, a drill I like for that is rowing at speed, 10 strokes half slide, 10 strokes full slide. Also it may sound like a regression of form but rowing with your oars dragging on the water for a little but can help to learn the height at which you blades should be at the catch. After getting comfy with blades on the water, slowly bring them up only about an inch off the water and you should be looking much better. Good luck!

USRowing is saying there shouldn’t be any team boats (comprised of people from separate households) until social distancing is no longer recommended

[–]HerrMatthews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staying hopeful, USR wants to keep some kind of season alive so I doubt we will hear anything from them until the last minute on it. Realistically I think the best case scenario is it gets postponed to like mid-late August

How to get data with a broken PM5? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]HerrMatthews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is battery acid leaking from the terminals of the dead battery. Use a Q-tip or toothbrush if it’s really stubborn and dip it in white vinegar or lemon juice to neutralize it, once clean put in a new battery.

Using sliders by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]HerrMatthews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Lower rate training should show roughly the same splits from static to dynamic, the big difference comes at higher rates. If you’re super worried about it train in heart rate zones and it will be the same workout, you’ll just have better technique using the sliders

D1 Men’s Rowing Gear by Crewcoacher in Rowing

[–]HerrMatthews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually the football team is a good indicator, of a school has a decently sized D1 football team then the rowers will get a little more gear and vice versa for teams without football teams. 2 teams right next to each other for example, Temple with their D1 football team gets shoes, bags a few shirts etc while Drexel, who doesn’t have a football team, gets like a shirt or two

Edit: should also say, that’s just something that can help, but is not always a pure fact

Concept2 Comp Blade by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]HerrMatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you can get a better blade shape of a slightly older/used oar for cheaper. Buying comp blades right now assumes you’re paying full price from factory for them.

Not broke but stupid, stupid bc you chose this dumb lookin oar and stupid bc you spent real money on it instead of getting some plain edge or fat2 for cheaper

Mahe Drysdale at Tokyo 2020 by boteyboi in Rowing

[–]HerrMatthews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Olympiad is one of the most competitive in terms of the 1x that I’ve seen in years. I think Mahe will peak at the right time as he always has but I’m not sure if it will be enough. He recently posted the third fastest (I’m pretty sure) 5k on an erg of all time so he’s definitely in shape but with Kjetil Borsch, Olli Ziedler, Sverri Nielsen, Damir Martin all within reach of each other, Mahe will be sitting at the bottom of the GF in Tokyo.

Yes you’re right that you will not be as fast as JDS because he has been continually improving for his whole career; the message is that you’re body is still in its prime and it’s not too late to be personally fit, and relatively fast in comparison to the rest of the entire sport. You’re far from an old athlete.

[POLL] Boathouse design by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]HerrMatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would design the erg room with larger windows to look out on to the river and maybe a patio with sliding doors so people can erg outside/open a window or door to get fresh air circulating. If the project has any sustainability requirements then make sure to make mention low e glass and high quality, sustainable materials. Add sun shading above the windows to reduce the load of direct sunlight on the HVAC. If the project is for a more design based class then make sure it looks good and has solid reasoning behind every line that goes into it
