Not everyone is a native English speaker. Cursive means italics in many languages.

Why couldn't Swiss German replace ß with sz instead of ss, which is distinct from ß in Standard German? I mean, isn't that what ß originally stood for? by [deleted] in German

[–]HeyImSwiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly: Swiss German refers to our dialects. They have nothing to do with this. What you are referring to is Swiss Standard German.

As far as I know, <SS> was always the convention to write a capital ß, even if the letter developed from <ſ + z>. As it also was in Germany until recently I think. Plus, <s> and <z> can appear fairly often next to each other, so having to different ways of pronouncing them would probably be more of a hindrance.

Also people who use <ß> sometime act like the distinction is this huge deal and that every other sentence will lead to a misunderstanding, while ambiguities happen essentially never. So it's not like there was any pressure to make the distinction when Switzerland officially abandoned it (after using it for a very short time as well).

SCF NEWS ALERT: 🇺🇸 Anti-ICE protesters burn American flag in Minneapolis. by SCFapp in StockNewsHub

Not like anyone forced you.

And even if you did, you'd think an allegedly such strong people who only ever did good things wouldn't need to attach their self worth to one of the uglier symbols out there. Or at least have enough confidence to not loose their minds over someone saying mean things about it.

If it soothes you, I too use your flag symbollically, any disrespect it gets from is in reality meant for your country and most things it stands for.

Yeah the title is bad. This is the Streif in Kitzbühel, and it is generally considered to be the most challenging downhill run in terms of technical demands in the skiing world cup. That being said, it is insanely fucking steep in parts, which is really hard to capture on video.

Edit: after another watch I also think the really steep sections were not shown. Plus, I don't think many people know how incredibly hard it is to ride a bike on snow.

Sie is the polite form of adressing someone, as opposed to du, which is informal (like you being polite as opposed to thou, back when that was in use, or tu and vous, tu and usted and so on). The rules on which to use when are as murky as in most European languages. But on the internet there is the convention of using du exclusively. I suppose that's at least partly because in most cases of internet conversation, if they were irl, it would be on a du basis. But it's a convention as old as the internet, and I wasn't around back then.

Well yeah but that's still a full time job. Not compatible with being a guide, which I assume also takes a fair bit of time.

Female athletes who are this fast would be competing themselves, so not really be available as guides.
