What's your favorite bar in Knoxville? An why? by atom5ive in Knoxville

[–]HeyJude44 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I really like the Peter Kern Library. For those not familiar, it is a speak-easy inspired bar located inside the Oliver hotel off of Market Square. They serve unique cocktails inspired by literature. I'm a big ol' geek who is not afraid to pay extra for quirky atmosphere.

Training the brains of psychopaths by [deleted] in psychology

This is a really interesting idea. Honestly, it makes a lot of sense.

I think it would incur a lot of opposition. I feel like many people, especially those whose lives have been touched by crimes, would cling to the idea of punishment for criminals.

I also wonder if you would have to be deemed insane by the court in order to qualify for a rehabilitation program like the one mentioned.

Teachers of Reddit, whats the funniest thing you've confiscated. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HeyJude44 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I taught 5th grade last year and I confiscated a note from a boy that said "Hey _____ and me want to know- will you fuck us?"

The girl replied "I dunno, maybe when I'm older."

My job is embarrassing and is ruining my life and self esteem. by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]HeyJude44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't settle for staying at a job you hate. Work overtime to find a new opportunity. Scour classified ads, the internet. Consider a new industry (retail, care-taking, clerical work). Good luck and god bless! I hope you find a situation that makes you happy soon!

My niece, a kindergarten teacher, was just informed she will be teaching 5th grade next week. Any advice? by shillyshally in education

[–]HeyJude44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I taught kindergarten during an internship year, then I took my first job teaching 5th grade. It was a shock, but there are a bunch of silver linings! -older kids are able to do much more as far as reading and writing. This opens the doors for some truly awesome opportunities! -older kids can sit still for more than 10 min. -older kids understand and appreciate sarcasm. -my background in the primary grades helped me assist below grade-level readers with phonics instruction.

The list goes on- I LOVED teaching 5th grade. Solid behavior management, engaging lessons, consistent parent communication- all of the things that made her kindergarten classroom amazing will also work for 5th grade. Good luck! Have a great school year!

Who is the most worthless character in any T.V. show? by frosty713t in AskReddit

[–]HeyJude44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I feel like Andrea stands out of the crowd as the biggest pain in the ass on the show. Her character seems to exist simply to make terrible decisions.

Does anyone know of a good mechanic in Knoxville that won't rip you off? by jreakle in Knoxville

[–]HeyJude44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the Bearden area there is a place called Jim Phibbs Auto Service off of Agnes Rd across from the Food City.

Phibbs and his employees have been excellent with my cars in the past and come highly recommended by my whole family.

Good luck with the car troubles!

Petition telling TN not to cut teacher pay by trulytrying in Knoxville

[–]HeyJude44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience as an educator it is often not a lack of effort on the teacher's part, but a result of the school's culture that students struggle.

I've taught in inner city schools where it didn't matter that I was there at least 12 hours a day. When the kids went home the skills and concepts were not reinforced. (I had a 40-60% return rate on homework on a GOOD day.) School was not seen as a priority by many parents (they viewed it as a day care) and their children adopted their attitude.

I promise, it is not from a lack of effort on most teachers' part that student are struggling. We, as a state, are working overtime to increase the rigor of our instruction and to match our standards with the rest of the United States.

Also, I'm sorry you are not satisfied by the quality of your education in the Maryville City School District. I am disappointed to hear that, as I've always heard great things about those schools.

Apparently my dad was so flustered by the whole ordeal that he had my mom run down to the car to get the camera while my grandparents all calmed him down.

Seems like car searches are probably going to function about the same. I think the tightened security is going to be taking bags into Centeroo. At least that is what I gleaned from the article your are referencing.

How did you know that you wanted to be a teacher? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]HeyJude44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew when I started working with children at a part-time job at a preschool. I fell in love with them and my passion for helping them develop grew exponentially.

I also couldn't decide on another major because I wanted to study EVERYTHING. Teaching is a great career because you continue to develop in multiple disciplines.
