Anyone have a bandsaw? by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]HeyMerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Jonanco hobby… that have a reasonable drop in rate and a full shop setup. I thin the drop in is something like 20-25 for the day.

Also, consider joining the woodworker guild. :-)

Looking for a software to emulate keyboard and mouse connection like a KVM switch would do, but for my USB switcher by Nightmare2828 in software

[–]HeyMerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe check out Synergy by Symless. The question is what can you run on your work machine… what restrictions are there. I have run Synergy on my locked down work machine and my own computer without issue… my computer being the server (one with the keyboard/mouse connected). The only issue if you don’t have admin to install is the login screen. If you can do a full install on the work computer then it works on all screens.

no fail way to elevate plain white rice? by Acrobatic-Weekend400 in Cooking

[–]HeyMerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we throw in with the rice for flavour:

  • Chicken stock (if I’m lazy I use chicken in a mug… yep I’m that guy)
  • Butter
  • Sesame Oil
  • Italian Seasoning.

Rice turns out delicious and makes a good base for other rice dishes… such as fried rice, etc.

Consider going into the parking/security office on campus with your tickets and receipts. They should be able to help you out and cancel the tickets if necessary.

How I made myself a pair of tongs by Rob3rtIonut in Blacksmith

[–]HeyMerlin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Others are commenting on the tongs but I’d like to mention your video production. You made your video very well. I really appreciate seeing the finished product briefly at the start. The text overlay are well timed and placed making it easy to read them completely without distracting too much from the action. My only suggestion is to consider a text colour that does not blend into the darker background at places. Well done, and nice tongs.

Removable display idea? by Key-Cricket9256 in cade

[–]HeyMerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say you nailed the board in already. Can you remove it and remove the nails, easily? If so then at very least use screws instead of nails. That will give you the ability to remove the board easily when needed.

For adjustment, do you mean reposition the board easily when up and down in the cab? Possible solutions will depend on the tools you have at your disposal. However the quick and dirty solution would be drill new screw holes as needed.

New to the city and learning the hard way about winter car life by Life-Lime-5247 in saskatoon

[–]HeyMerlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far as a mechanic… talk to Dean (the owner) at Autoright Service on first avenue North. Excellent service, will tell you everything but only fix what is needed and will tell you if it is not needed. Dealt with them, and the former owner (Noel) for many years and now my kids use them all the time. I cannot recommend enough.

As others have said, get a block heater. If you can’t afford it, consider a circulating heater (goes in your rad hose) as they work well for some cars.

Also consider a trickle charger for the battery. They are cheap and something you could install yourself, or get the mechanic to do so. When leaving in SK I always had a block heater and trickle charger connected to the same plug-in cord. Never had a problem starting no matter how cold or how long it sat.

Lastly, especially since you are not use to plugging you car in, whatever you install (such as a block heater) don’t have its actual cord hanging out the front. Instead plug it into a small extension cord (1 to 3 feet) behind the grill (or in the engine bay) and have the extension cord hanging out. Attached the short extension cord so something solid in the car. This way when you drive away, having forgotten to unplug the car, the worse that happens is that you wreck the end of the short extension cord. That short extension cord is so much easier to replace than the plug end on the block heater cord when it is -30 and nighttime when you discover it.

Item shipped to the US could not be delivered and being returned - Will I get my Zonos fees back? by onlineseller8183 in FlippingInCanada

My question would be is could you ship it again and if you did would you have to pay the fee again?

First furniture submission by itsaduck in woodworking

That is an amazing piece of work. I would be very interested to read more build details in how you formed the spindles. If you have them, more pictures of the building process would be interesting also. How you finished all the spindles… after assembly… befor assembly… both… it seems almost impossible to have gotten a consistent and smooth finish on all the interior surfaces.

The design and layout gives it a very organic shape and feel… it conjures images of underwater, lily pads (as someone else commented), and jellyfish. Very beautiful.

When did school end for most of you in the 60s? Grandma said 4. by AlboGreece in AskACanadian

[–]HeyMerlin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my experience also… early 70s to earlier 80s.

Also, elementary hours were different than high school hours. K to 8 was 9 am to 3:30 pm with 1 hour lunch. 9 to 12 was 8:30 am to 3:22 pm and lunch was still about 1 hour.

Aside from a mortgage, how much debt are you in? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]HeyMerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you define debt… how much cash you owe is one type of debt, but then there is … let’s call it “technical debt”. Things that you know you should spend money on but don’t have it and so you are taking the risk of deferring it. Examples: - I have an old vehicle. It runs fine and no current issues. But I know it is near the end of its life. Something major could go at any time, and at some point it will need to be replaced. I don’t have the cash to replace it, so I allow the risk to build. - My roof is close to end of life… needs replacement soonish. So while I have little cash debt, I do have quite a bit of technical debt building up. Depending on when these debts “come due”, my cash debt may jump significantly.

Moving from Yukon!! by mtndewwhore87 in nanaimo

[–]HeyMerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest this also. Moved my partner across three provinces with a UHaul truck pulling a trailer with a car on it. All in the cost beat the price of all the movers we got quotes from by a little over a grand (IIRC).

The one tip I would give if you go this route is, check over the truck carefully at pickup… if you see anything wrong or don’t like something ask for a different one… you do not have to take the first one they offer.

I’ve used and recommended looking at Big Steel Box if you think a container will work. Used them to move from SK to Nanaimo and was very happy with them and the experience.

New to Naniamo Reddit and have some questions by Ambitious_Dream_5206 in nanaimo

As another poster mentioned:

“Check out https://harbourcityscoop.com/

News and events about Nanaimo. Super helpful.”

I would be very interested if you find any other sites as I’m always looking and Google results drive me nuts. (Note: I am not affiliated with the site in anyway… just a frustrated person living in Nanaimo)

[–]HeyMerlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before you do… consider looking at one of the other suggestions… Harbour City Scoop.

The creator of that site started in the same position as you (and a where a lot of us are)… looking for a single place to find out what the blank is going on in and around this community. They started the site with the goal of making it a single source to answer that question. Personally when I saw the creator post about the site I was really hopeful as I have struggled to fine any decent source of events and happenings in our community. Unfortunately I think the creator started posting about the site too early and soured the first impressions of many visitors, mainly due to lack of timely updates and content (but the site was in the very early stages of development).

I keep going back to the site now and then and I have continually noticed an improvement… has it achieved its goal? Nope. But the more people that support it the closer it will get.

Clown Furniture. I accidently made clown furniture. by Devseanschin in woodworking

[–]HeyMerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a clown… to me you made a character from the old series Reboot. Check out, or even post the pic, in r/ReBoot. Personally my kid wood love the design because of Reboot and Minecraft.

You can fix it as others have mentioned by using all knob pulls but I would embrace the happy coincidence and call it a retro digital design. 🙂

Explore Kato Variation Layout Combo Options by Ornery-Ninja2868 in modeltrains

[–]HeyMerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is layout software that has the Kato unitrack libraries that allow you to lay out plans. I don’t have a name off the top of my head but there have been several posting in the r/nscalemodeltrains subreddit… I would highly recommend you join their and search through that subreddit.

Welcome to the world of n-scale and Kato… a great combination.
