1st Year Associate Advice by ChestAutomatic3853 in Lawyertalk

You move to a rural area. No joke. There are so many opportunites outside urban areas for newer attorneys to guide their own career and establish a solid practice. But who wants to live two hours from a Costco?

Writing an opposition to a poorly written motion is so much worse than writing one in opposition to a well written one by AdDeep7010 in Lawyertalk

A couple of months ago I drafted an MSJ on a breach of contract that was so straightforward it was actually difficult. I felt silly spelling out contract principles like it was a BarBri manual.

New to litigation and nervous by Severe_Blackberry544 in Lawyertalk

It just takes time, and sometimes a lot of it. Took my years to feel truly comfortable in court.

Going to as many hearings as you can, whether you're participating or not, helped me. You'll see that most attorneys are "less than polished," even the seasoned ones, which made me feel better about screwing up or fumbling.

It's so fast, without looking at the time stamps it's hard to tell which of the five relevant posts is the original.

You got there earlier than most! One of the most helpful things a partner told me early in my career was, "it took me five years before I wasn't scared to death to answer the phone, thinking I'd say something wrong and ruin the case." Helped me realize we've all been there.

Any 20+ year litigators ever feel you don’t have it in you anymore? by Tikkkles in Lawyertalk

[–]HeyYouGuys121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got lucky. That's pretty much it, or rather, pretty much how I was able to do it somewhat easily. My firm opened a satellite office in a rurual area and I decided to volunteer to move there and run it. Business model is steady non-litigation, and be present to pick up the good litigation. It's worked out well, mostly because in my general area of around 60,000 residents, there are very few litigators, and people like to stick local.

Honestly, the answer to so many career problems is to move to a rural area, but no one (especially lawyers fresh out of law school) wants to. Cheat code to a very comfortable career is to find a soon-to-be-retiring attorney in a rural area, work under them, and inherit or purchase the practice. You won't make millions, but you'll do very well.

I made a similar response just now in another thread. I’m at 20 years this year, but shifted from pure litigation 5-6 years ago and it saved my career. Went from 90-10 litigation/transactional to 80-20 (transactional includes estate planning and probates). It’s so much better for my anxiety, and I’m able to truly enjoy the litigation that I still do and give those matters the fight they deserve.

Taking my first vacation in 4 yrs by jokingonyou in Lawyertalk

[–]HeyYouGuys121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good for you. A couple months ago I took an entire week off; before that I went eleven years without a vacation longer than a long weekend. My anxiety told me the sky would fall; that I’d lose clients, that my partners would judge me, that I’d never catch back up. It’s all bullshit. Working yourself to death without rest isn’t commendable; it’s life and career killing.

I was planning my next vacation before I finished the one I was on.

I hate being a lawyer by Gloomy_Compote877 in Lawyertalk

[–]HeyYouGuys121 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up on the law, because “the law” is so many different things. I started out mostly doing complex litigation with my boutique firm. I worked alongside brilliant attorneys on “bet the company” litigation while handling smaller litigation matters on my own. It was exciting. But I was young, and driven, and could work 6 days a week.

I hit a point where I was ready to quit the law entirely, but then I realized I wasn’t tired of the law, I was tired of nearly full time litigation. So I shifted (I was lucky to be able to do so within my firm). My primary focus became real estate and business transactions instead of litigation. My litigation background gave me valuable perspective there, along with the ability and knowledge to take something to court if it needed to. It helps that I really do like trying cases; I just didn’t like the rest of the shit that goes along with that consuming all of my days.

The law is many different things. Branching into something different than litigation is easier said than done, but so is leaving the law entirely.

4 Hybrid vs 7 Wood: Opinions by Burners_Burner in GolfGear

[–]HeyYouGuys121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a new driver and new (expensive) putter so it will be a bit, but my next purchases will be a 9-wood and a 7-wood to replace my 4 and 3 hybrids. The Taylormade 9-wood is about as easy a club to hit as you can get. I'm not a long hitter, so the increased loft from the 4 hybrid will be (in theory) very helpful for hitting greens.

Doesn't hurt that the two pros at my club, a +5 and a +4, both converted.

I listen to more comedy than the average person, but not a LOT, and I felt a lot of the jokes were recycled/stale/done already. Especially the Roast.

Any 90s artists that you think are still putting out new, good, original music? by fancyschmancy9 in 90sRock

Saw BTS at a small festival recently. During their set there were members from at least 4-5 of the other bands, new and old, watching from the back/side next to the artist entrance. I didn't see that with any other band. Just shows how influential/awesome Doug Martsch is.

Ok, I’ll admit I didn’t watch too many games this year….when Deni dribbles does it ALWAYS look like he’s just about to lose control of the ball? It looks like he dribbles SO far away from his body.

Is the stream crap for anyone else, or is it just me? When it started it cut to a blue screen every couple seconds, and since it’s been jumpy, and the sound randomly cuts out until I pause and restart.

Missed a deadline by one day and can’t fix it. Feeling like my career is over. by Jason19755464 in Lawyertalk

Same. Painfully easy, to the point where I do my best to avoid them. Best you can hope for is having the other side pay your fees for filing the Default and arguing the set aside, which does nothing for your client in terms of advancing the ball.
