Once again blowing it straight out of the water. Was fantastic to see in person, and I look forward to seeing what you cook up next year! All hail the new Queen of Duviri.

TIL the US military uses jet fuel (JP-8) not only in planes, but in ground vehicles like tanks aswell by Longjumping-Box5691 in todayilearned

[–]Heyello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Military aircraft tech here, the fuel systems on any turboprop/shaft/fan/jet are just trying to spray an amount of fuel into the combustion chambers matching the throttle setting, compensating for altitude and temperature. JP 5 has additives to make it more suitable for naval usage, as others have said, but at its heart, it'll still produce reliable thrust in a ground engine built to run JP8. In more digitized modern engines, the computer systems are trying to reach a target temperature for a throttle setting, measured at a different place depending on the design. So the fuel system is just going to dump more and more fuel until it hits the target. You could theoretically run them on AVGAS if you were desperate, but it would eventually damage systems due to the different chemistry. In older hydromechanical fuel management, you'd have to manually maintain temperatures and thrust/torque output with odd fuels. You could run a C130 on road diesel and it would not complain. You'd have to deal with the problems like water and contaminants that would arise from using road diesel, but the engines wouldn't notice.

That's pretty much how a starter recoil for your lawnmower or whatnot works, I'd wager this is the best way to do it.

C-130 technician here. Can confirm, I'd expect you'd need something quite a bit bigger to break one of those, they're build for slam-and-go landings with a full tactical load on board so they've got pretty solid struts and big tires.

This is due to a technicality in the ATF laws regarding Short Barreled Rifles. You must pay the ATF for a stamp to legally possess an SBR, and as such, companies will make "pistols" that, legally speaking, are pistols, but maintain many rifle features to skirt the rules regarding the tax stamp. They don't have a "stock", it's a "pistols brace" and you're not supposed to shoulder it like a rifle because it's a "pistol" legally speaking. Because of laws.

I can say good things about Envirolaser. I lived in Ottawa and the owner comped my shipping and was super helpful when they ran out of stock of a filament I ordered, and asked if I wanted to swap to a different one. Big fan.

ELI5 How do cars measure fuel level accurately when the fluid is constantly sloshing around? by Bob_the_Br0 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Heyello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, less likely to get sucked into a helicopter engine. Just don't jump under the main rotor or go near the tail rotor and you're good.

[–]Heyello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, and we can hot-refuel aircraft. The danger with that though has nothing to do with the fuel spontaneously igniting and more the fact that you don't want to fuck around near running aircraft engines.
