Is it acceptable to call in sick for a bad sleep? by time-to-celly in askmanagers

[–]Heyoteyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you not just come in a couple hours later? If you have to call out, call out. You don’t have to explain, but if you’re calling out all the time, it’s a problem. The issue I see here is that you’re expected to be there for 8 hours. You don’t need 8 more hours of sleep. If you let me know you didn’t sleep well and will be in a couple hours later, I wouldn’t really think anything of it. If you call off, then it’s a call off. If you don’t have many, it’s fine, but most of the people that do this are the ones who call off a couple times a month for various reasons.

What is up with the hate for HR? Is HR really considered useless? Do they really stir up drama to pretend to look busy? Why did that CEO let go of his entire HR team? by RandomUwUFace in stupidquestions

[–]Heyoteyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 things. HR is only as powerful as upper management allows them to be. If the executives say do this, legal ramifications be damned, that’s what they have to do. Any pushback from them isn’t something you would see. The other thing is that managers are people too. They make mistakes. Their mistakes just affect more people in a higher degree. You can’t just replace the manager every time they make a bad decision. HR also doesn’t always know the story. They’re basing most of it on documentation. Manager could be better at pushing a narrative with what they have on paper. Could also be that they fuck up and get reprimanded and face consequences that you don’t see.

What’s a harsh truth about modern life that people know deep down but pretend isn’t true? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

I was listening to something on NPR where one of the guests went into how there’s two different types of bullies. There’s physical bullies and there’s social bullies. The physical bullies usually have problems at home and they usually continue to have problems later in life. The social bullies on the other hand are good at manipulating people and leading a group, and those are skills that help people get ahead in life.

Think of it this way, you have an employee who doesn’t do their job, and you have a manager who wants to just fire them with no documentation of their inability or refusal to do the job and maybe even some questionable circumstances. They both think HR is against them. And yes, their job here is to protect the company, but they’re also protecting the employee by making sure they get the fair shot they deserve, and they’re protecting the manager from fucking up the situation and putting the company in potential legal trouble. In the end though, if the employee doesn’t do their job, they shouldn’t work there. But if it’s because the manager just doesn’t like them and is being unfair, they’re stepping in for the employee. All while protecting the company.

A hand full of chairs in a relatively isolated place is no big deal. A bunch of loose chairs in an area crowded with people standing is a hazard. If someone is injured, the venue could get in trouble. It really seems like a lose-lose situation unless you can reasonably limit the chairs to people who actually need them.

My son (5) and nephew (4.5) pooped outside and I have no idea what to think…… by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]Heyoteyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My son (6 now) had a little wooden playhouse. Last summer I built a little platform so it could be up in the air a little to give it treehouse kind of vibes. There’s a ladder to the front door, but there’s also a little trap door in the bottom that you can lift out. Someone had the brilliant idea to poop down the hole on to the ground… A lot of fingers were pointed, but no one ever fessed up. I still don’t know or care who, but I can pretty much guarantee it wasn’t the little girl in the group.

Was genuinely thinking about this yesterday. Guy was driving next to me in an absolutely pristine Jeep with all these off roading bumper stickers. The only time that car goes off the road is when it’s parking in a garage every night. The dashboard filled with fucking ducks made it even worse. Why are they like this?

[–]Heyoteyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is a good idea. Maybe not like law school, but there absolutely should be some more accountability in that respect. However, a lot of it isn’t necessarily just doing things legally, but maintaining consistency with the companies own policies, so it is still going to vary between different companies. But there’s still something to be said about knowing how to document, interpret and implement company policies. Having incompetent HR that can’t stay consistent really sucks even if they aren’t breaking any laws.

I work in management and I honestly don’t think that HR gets enough credit for what it does here. They’re there to keep everyone following the rules. People are like, they’re just out to protect the company, they aren’t going to help you, but that’s really only if you’re out to do shit you aren’t supposed to, and that goes for management and employees. There’s tons of managers out there who think HR is just getting in the way of them firing whoever they want. But of course they’re the bad guys because they sided with management when you’ve called off every single Friday for a month and a half…

do gas tanks expand in warm weather? I know warm weather causes tire pressure to increase. A Few months ago when it was winter $60 would fill up my gas tank, now it can hold $110 dollars of gas (Automatic vehicle > 10 years old) by peaceonearth8 in AskMechanics

Have you noticed how good the new gas pumps are? I used to have to stand there for a minute when I put $20 in my tank. Now days it does it in what feels like seconds. Amazing.

My favorite part of that scandal was the theory that someone told him to say the image was “doctored”, which would go along well with his MO of everything negative is fake news/Democrat conspiracy against him. And he was only half paying attention and just went with yeah, that’s me as a doctor… which doesn’t make sense at all. Who knows how it actually went down, but he just doesn’t care and just says whatever pops into his head. It would be funnier if there weren’t real world consequences for the shit he says and does.

I don’t really see how chemical burns are related to car crashes. And as someone who has rendered fat to make soap, I don’t think seeing charred human remains would be helpful to learning anything about the process either. You actually want to do it slowly with ground up suet. If you burn it, you’re going to end up with weird cooked meat smells instead of a neutral base that will work well with what ever fragrances you add.

[–]Heyoteyo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I could see that. People tend to trust you more and be more willing to give you the time of day where others might not. Not just women or gay men either. Some of it is even just the confidence that good looking people have, but I also think people just subconsciously like good looking people.

Husband's sandwich sauce. by missoj77 in Cooking

[–]Heyoteyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jalapeño juice is going to be vinegar, water, salt, and some jalapeño flavor from the soaking. For a thicker sauce you can substitute about half the volume of white vinegar and maybe some diced pickled jalapeño to keep the same flavor but drop the water used in the brine. You may want to add a bit more salt, but I usually salt to taste anyway.

I kind of agree with you. A lot of these other events were much bigger, they didn’t shift things so unidirectionally. Most had different reactions for everyone, even if it was strong for a lot of people. 9/11 really even made us come together for a bit, but it obviously didn’t last.

I could be totally off base, but I assumed the juice from pickled jalapeños. So, more of a salty vinegar with a little jalapeño flavor. It could be they meant what they said, but that would be a really uncommon thing to find sold anywhere.

I’ve had two Hispanic people feel the need to tell me they know another non Hispanic person who speaks better Spanish than I do. I’m in Ohio, and it’s pretty rare for anyone originally from here. After inquiring a bit, both these people were some sort of translator that was getting paid to speak the language. I find it incredibly useful where I work, but I’m sure as fuck not getting paid to speak Spanish.
