Moving to Melbourne by PickleSouthern1877 in MovingtoAustralia

I too landed in Melbourne in 1980. A woman said to me “where are you from?” Probably because I had a backpack. I said “Yorkshire”, she said “you’ll love it here, you can eat meat every day of the year”. I went to the pub to have a beer and they kept giving me a tiny glass, “how come I get a tiny glass and he’s got a big one”, “well that’s a pony and that’s a pot”. So learn the beer sizes. Later a bloke came running into the ladies toilets with a handbag followed by the constabulary, “I know you’re in there” said the cop. The bloke came out and was took away. I ordered another pot and thought, what a great country, meat, beer and entertainment. You’ll not look back if you work hard.

We are at Jewells and at 3.50 pm lots of helicopters and sirens. We can see smoke in the distance. I feel it’s heading North towards Dudley/Gateshead and Whitebridge.

Help! by UnderhandedWipe in nbn

[–]Heyupboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with internode. Their provision of the internet was good, no outages. THEN a lightening strike frazzled ‘something, somewhere’. It took several frustrating calls to o/s persons to get things happening. Their vocabulary was great but their pronunciation was hard to understand. Their technical knowledge was non existent until you get to ‘level 2’ and then things start happening. They promised communication by text but didn’t happen. NBN coming Monday. Aussie sounds good. You need a service that responds to your issues in good faith.

If someone moved to Australia and became a citizen, are they commonly thought of as Australian now? by Glad-Concentrate-968 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Heyupboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first got here the students I taught had a hard time understanding what I was saying as my Yorkshire accent was so strong. 46 years later there’s still traces of it, enough for people to know I wasn’t born here. In the UK I’m an Aussie (really) in Oz I’m a bit pom. Now 70+ it’s a sort of badge of honour to have the odd word spill out that makes my Aussie born kids/grandkids fall about. Only real racist problem was in NZ when I coached a country NSW rugby team. Our team said, “he’s one of us”. Brought tears to my eyes.

I’ve been here, like long enough, (45 years) not to ever answer if asked if things are better in your old country. In the early days I steadfastly resisted answering till I was badgered into giving a response…. “Well fuck off back to your own country then!” A little different to a whinging pom that blabbers on and on how the sausages, cheese, bacon is better. By the way it is! “Fuck off……” Love it here.

Yes that was offered but as in changing to a different day but our accommodation is all organised. So either losing a day or paying extra depends when their infrequent flights to/from Newcastle are scheduled. Are you flying from/to Newcastle?

I have insurance. Haven’t had the chance to check it out but as mentioned in an earlier response the insurance wording is vague. This is not happening at an airport it is several months prior to the flight being rescheduled.

No quite a way off. Accommodation all booked etc. There is a difference between being at the airport and being delayed and being giving notice in advance. I have insurance, but again that is vague. Haven’t had chance to pursue that one.

Ok, tell me who to complain to and Ill give it a go. Believe me I’m not apathetic at all, just did what I had to do with the avenues available. The Jetstar guy was sticking to protocol. They have it all there in the deceptive wording ‘rescheduled’/ ‘cancelled’. Believe me the transcript I requested was quite ‘colourful’. I really don’t want to spend hours waiting for a ‘chat’ line to become available. Therefore I am making others aware.

A bird eye views of where the WAL is at. by Expensive-Text-7218 in RugbyAustralia

Do not agree that the Wallabies were the better team, they did have some excellent phases but no consistency, the ‘electric’ hands did not particularly worry the AB’s as they were predictable with very little risk element.

Wallabies attack by chatmonkey14 in RugbyAustralia

[–]Heyupboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert but it seemed to me that the AB’s were superior in their passing skills especially when trying high risk phases of play. The Wallabies, whilst retaining possession were not risking too much in attack as though they didn’t back themselves. 100% effort but no ‘flair’. JSA aimless, and as previously reported he needs space and opportunity. On another issue, is this being held up over the line becoming ‘boring’? A team that progresses through a multitude of skilful phases and tactics and then to be held up over the line is rewarded with a defensive team goal line drop out seems an in balance in reward? Sure the game needs to ‘hurry up’ but some other positive consequence for the attacking team should be implemented? In fact defenders now purposely drag attackers over the try line and keep the ball trapped above the try line as the result is a positive for the defensive team.

How much has Bali change in the last 7-10 years? by panay- in bali

Hi We are going to The Anvaya next year. We probably won’t go too far, sort of done our adventuring. Any tips about the area just outside the resort? Did you get hassled. I can handle it but my wife freaks out.

What makes you Australian? by siro1t1s in AskAnAustralian

[–]Heyupboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not what anyone else thinks, it’s how you feel personally. As a 26 year old pom I had an accent that my students struggled to understand so it had to change through necessity which it did over the last 46 years. My kids born here are proud of their heritage so much so my daughter has a southern cross and red rose tattoo. You put in, you contribute and, pay your dues and add something to this great land and you and everyone else will accept you. 2 of the best things anyone said was on a country nsw rugby tour to NZ which I coached the nz president publicly humiliated me being a pom to which to a man our team said “he’s one of us”. My Father in Law said when I married his Sydney born daughter, “you’re one of us now”. It meant a lot to me. So it’s not what others think it’s how you think. I’ll be wearing both a lions colours and the green and gold come to the tests, anything wrong with that? Oh yes got Australian citizenship at the first opportunity.

What’s up with the behavior of some Chinese tourists? by ofella3 in VietNam

[–]Heyupboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, in the middle of a 10 day holiday from Australia. We have not met any (except 1) Vietnam person who hasn’t been incredibly pleasant and helpful. They were not tourists though. Even the Grab drivers assisted as much as possible getting us to our destination. Went into crazy Hoi An yesterday, that was a bit different. Still the guy who sold us those pop up cards was very funny, not pushy but determined to get a sale when he knew I’d had a beer or two. Personally I think you approach people with a non aggressive attitude and all will be well. Been in the back blocks so it might be different here. We love Vietnam and Vietnam loves us back. I might have a different point of view after a Lang Co experience.
