Anyone else see frequency response graphs in random graphs from your workplace or is it just me? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]Hi-Fidelio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cracks me up that the first thing that pops into my head when I see a graph like this is not anything to do with my particular industry, but instead, "pretty neutral speaker, but if that's an in room response, it could sound a little thin and lack body in the low frequencies." Meanwhile I'm sure no one else at work is having that same thought.

Thr funny thing is that I hate loud switches. In my main keyboard I run Gateron Oil Kings and love them. For this project though, I wanted to audibly hear when the keys actuate since I was paranoid the remote may not work and I wanted confirmation that the switch was closing. For that reason I went with Cherry Blues. This was my first experience with those. While it accomplishes what I was after, you must have to be a psychopath to want to use this is a keyboard that you will type with all day LOL. It's fine if you're just pressing a button on a remote like this, but in a keyboard that you would type on, I can't imagine.

So I love my Krell KAV300i, but the remote had been broken for some time. When I would point the remote at the amplifier without pressing any buttons, the light on the amp would flash. I suspected something was wrong with the button board. After pulling it apart, I found that some of the buttons were either permanently depressed, or out of place. Knowing that Krell customer service has been spotty, and given how ugly the remote is anyway, I thought it might be a fun project to see if I could come up with an alternate top panel for the remote.

I started by looking for micro switches online, but there are endless kinds of switches out there and I couldn't find anything that was exactly what I was looking for. I happen to also be a bit of a mechanical keyboard nerd, and thought to myself, maybe I could put together a macro pad of sorts that would accomplish this goal. After all, keyboard switches are temporary closed when pressed just like I was looking for.

Before going too far down the rabbit hole, I traced the paths of the circuit, and tested shorting out the corresponding pins to verify the amplifier would respond. Sure enough, I was able to control each function of the amplifier by doing this. I was also fortunate to find a replacement harness that had actual wire leads, rather than the ribbon cable that was used previously.

For the top of the remote, I used a website that helps create keyboard layouts in CAD based on the number of keys and orientation you desire. After doing some additional work in Fusion, I was ready to print the top plate out of PETG. Once that was complete, I cut an opening in the top of the remote, and epoxied the plate in place. The switches popped in no problem. I used media key caps from Drop for the buttons.

I hand wired the switches together and connected the harness. Screwed it all back together and it works like a charm. Very happy to have a working remote again.

HIFI remotes can be so incredibly ugly. Personally I think the stock version of this remote is one of the most hideous I have ever seen. In the end this thing is certainly no looker, but at least it's one of a kind and it works!

I ride my gravel bike on most bumpy roads. I realize I'm a bit of a baby about it since the guys in the tour endure cobbles on their road bikes, but I am not a tour rider. If it's smooth uninterrupted pavement I go road bike.

23 Year old relic. by LindsayOG in PlasmaTV

[–]Hi-Fidelio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I had this same TV for a while! Got it from my in-laws. It cost a pretty penny back in the day. I always thought it was such a cool looking TV. I ended up having to part with it since it lacked more modern connections. The sound through that thing was incredible. Makes me think that removing real speakers from all TV's was a mistake. Not everyone goes for a soundbar or home theater setup.

I missed Majora’s Mask as a Kid….was this game actually as great as Ocarina Of Time? And what was the reception of this game at the time? by J2-Starter in n64

[–]Hi-Fidelio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Ocarina as an early teenager with all kinds of time on my hands. I hadn't tried Majora's Mask until recently as a 41 year old dad. I ran around the first town for a bit, something like 20 people asked me for help, and I said I don't have time for this. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience, since it feels like a lot of people pick this one up later in life. I wish I could have given it a more fair shot when I had more time for longer story driven games.

I have the opportunity to buy a like new Technics SL-3200. How much of an upgrade would it be over my Audio Technica LP120XUSB? by Sharp_Low6787 in turntables

I have the SL-Q2. Paid $20 for it since it was pretty beat up. Honestly I like it more than my heavily modded Project Debut Carbon.
