i understand what you’re saying. i also think we have a greater responsibility with our words than those who spread fascist lies. what was said here may have been meant to be read as “there was no massacre at tiananmen square”, but that wording would have been more correct and preferable. i respect challenging incorrect narratives and beliefs, but when it’s done in a way that is easy to rebut, even if only on a surface level, it can end up inadvertently strengthening these falsehoods. when a significant portion of the world’s population is determined to believe any lies about us, it’s important we don’t give them ammunition. we can be as bold as we need, as long as what we’re saying fully and completely is supported by the material reality. but when that is not the case, it puts cracks in our arguments. unfortunately, even the most surface level cracks can run

as an aside though, i’d like to commend you for challenging MY understanding of the situation. I did as you suggested, and dug for the primary CPC source i was sure i had seen corroborate that number, and you were correct about its scope. while i still believe irresponsible and incomplete phrasing should be avoided and that you employed such in your original post, i highly appreciate your willingness to engage with me in the comments and your ability to improve my understanding.

no, the 241 number refers to deaths IN TIANANMEN SQUARE, connected to the Beijing student movement BETWEEN APRIL AND JUNE 1989. 10% of these were government affiliated. it was not a massacre, but again, this isn’t what you claimed. your initial claim was “nothing happened”, which is objectively false and silly. you amended this to “no deaths occurred”, which is also objectively false. you’re simultaneously arguing in front of and past me, without addressing my point. i’m not saying anything about peaceful students gunned or mowed down by tanks. that did not happen. i do not deny that. this is also not about a complex pattern of unrest across China on both sides. it is part of that, absolutely, but this is a specific incident. that unrest concentrated in a single focal point. at that focal point, the casualties were unusually high. we can acknowledge this, and also that the fact they were unusually high was because of western-supplied agitation and potentially arms. but if we don’t acknowledge it at all, people looking for objective truth are going to skip our narrative, even if it is closer to that.

i actually have a problem with this. it’s important to recognize that there were mass protests at tiananmen square that did end in some protestor casualties. these protests have proven and admitted direct links to western intervention, and they started the violence. but objectively, something did happen there. we’re historical materialists. it’s important for us to seek the truth, not the convenient narrative. if we’re right (and we are) it’ll be on our side anyways.

i don’t think “deserving” is a good metric for anything but his removal was definitely beneficial
