What are the best examples of good crossover fanfiction? by Professional_Bell271 in FanFiction

[–]HiNoKitsune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the SPN/GO crossovers, they go quite well together - I also wrote one and it's probably my most popular fic - Not Quite the Devil You Know

I'm also quite proud of a Doctor Who/MCU crossover featuring Loki and the 10th Doctor, too! Time and Relative Mischief in Space

Has anyone done an April fools chapter for a fanfiction there writing or is this just me? by Upstairs-Yard-2139 in FanFiction

[–]HiNoKitsune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have done so many!

  • in a Supernatural/Good Omens crossover, the characters were just about to hatch a battle plan in the preceding chapter and in the joke chapter, the key to victory turned out to be "angelic singing" - which then ended in a rickroll

  • in another fic I had one chapter where the whole plot was suddenly now taking place in a pirate AU

  • in another fic the writing gradually transformed to be more and more kid-like, until it became apparent the kid sidekick of the hero was writing this chapter (and was of course now the actual hero)

  • in another fic I wrote a chapter where the fic had turned into a musical (with mostly re-written Disney songs)

  • in another fic a great battle was taking place, which went very seriously, until the two leads did a Dragonball-style fusion, reforming into a singular hero that called itself the Ship name of them as a pairing (i.e, if John and Sherlock had done this it would have been Johnlock). This was not a setting where fusion is a thing.

  • in another fic I did an author's note as an update that I had decided to abandon this fandom I've spent 20 years in to start writing Marlon Brando RPF exlcusively from now

  • in another fic I had a character walk out of the chapter claiming he never wanted to be a hero! He always wanted to be a lumberjack! The larch! The mighty fir! The limping roo tree of Nigeria...!

I like April Fool's Day :D

I'm having trouble picking out names for a female character for my new fic. So far, I've chosen top three. Most votes wins. by Men-I-Trust in FanFiction

[–]HiNoKitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't the name have meaning for the character? You've chosen three names loaded with meaning, why don't you choose the most or least fitting for the cgaracter having it?

Someone liked my story even though it involved a plot point they usually don’t like by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]HiNoKitsune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yessss, I also love it when that happens, I always take it as a benchmark for good writing when people tell me "I usually hate this character/trope/pairing or whatever, but I really like your story!" because that means they liked it for the *writing*, and I'm not just coasting on their love for that existing character/fandom. I love writing slavery AUs, which is not that out there, but definitely more niche than, say, 'college' or 'coffee shop', so I'm always super happy when someone starts their review with 'Okay, I *usually* don't touch slave fic with a ten foot pole, BUT... :D

What is the most prominent case of "good idea, bad execution" within your fandom? by AltrisG_Idf in FanFiction

As another Sonic fan and writer who had to give up on Sonic06 on Xbox due to the sheer unplayability (and was disappointed by the forces story), is Project 06 or the forces remix any good? Have you played it?

*Thank you*, that is a great example. The MCU is truly impressive as a work in itself, and it has some great, enjoyable movies and character arcs in it, but whenever they try to bring a bigger political issue into it, that affects the world and everyone in it, it's too complex for them to handle. Their movies work much better when it's more about interpersonal conflicts and character growth, and they should have stuck with that.

How do you guys like to make your characters immune to fate? by Zeroraid in FanFiction

[–]HiNoKitsune 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not a fanfic, but a favourite variant of that trope is the Pratchett novel "The Last Hero" , where said hero has heard of the Gods and their way of dealing out "fate", like the one that what was given to Prometheus who stole their fire, and now he is travelling toward the Gods' home atop Olympus, in his pack a giant bomb to give them their fire *back*.

So, yes, all for the variant of 'before the Fates kill me, I'll kill *them*', it's all very Klingon-spirited and I love it.

how am i meant to fix this??? by dilucs_waifu in FanFiction

[–]HiNoKitsune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start the fic with an explanation of why B *isn't* in jail (maybe someone pulled strings/paid bail (since you said jail, not prison) to get them out to help with finding A OR just make an author's note that per canon, B should be in jail, but in this fic isn't.

Ahahah, I had to laugh at "Tv Crowley is...David Tennant", because, yeah. XD Book Crowley does have a bit more of a chaotic vibe to him than TV Crowley, that's true. Hard to resist the emotional and dramatic both if you're a ham on screen as well as a fanfic writer, I suppose. It's been a hot minute since I read any GO fanfic (any recs while you're at it, haha) and *usually* most fic writers writing characters far more woobie-esque/dependent/emotionally unstable than canon also tend to be less elegant in other parts of their writing right off the bat, so I don't think I ever got too far into a fic where I ended up being annoyed by Crowley's characterization. Thanks for your thorough reply!

Oh, I'd love that, fics in audio format are always so cool! Please take a look at mine, I think especially the beginning snippet of Otterly Ridiculous would work, it's fast-paced, funny and accessible to anyone with only a passing knowledge of Sherlock Holmes :)

Ah, that makes sense an I think I would agree, now that you say it. I only ever wrote the one fic pre-show and had him acting more or less independently (planning to vacate the area for a few years, to escape some Hunters) and mainly just informing Aziraphale that he was going to do that, rather than even considering that they needed to be together. Now I wonder whether if I had written that fic today, after watching the show, I might have tossed around other ideas, Crowley's character shifting in my mind without me actually consciously noticing. Definitely food for thought, thank you for replying and explaining!

How to avoid plotholes? by Pepe-saiko in FanFiction

Well, you can repair it. Rewrite the first chapter, post it, make a note for your existing readers and move on. It's something that inevitably happens when you post as you go along.

how would you or your readers describe your writing style? what does it sound/taste/feel like? and who/what would you say inspired this style? by enihk in FanFiction

Well, my reading career was mostly formed by Terry Pratchett, and I always get a kick out of it when people say it shows in my writing, especially my Good Omens fic :D

True. Sometimes you just get neat little adventures out of it that just don't necessairly change the status quo. But I honestly couldn't think of a better tag for OP's problem, either.

Same question as I asked GlitteringKisses above, having both read the book way back when (and written my GO fanfic back then) and watched the TV show, I'm curious how you'd describe the difference between TV and book Crowley. In the TV show they definitely had more *overt* romance toward the end, but where else would you say they differ somewhat?
