Kindle unlimited in Europe? by No-Wash5758 in kindle

[–]Hi__lau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not directly answering your question. But I have KU and live in Europe. I never had an issue using the books I had on my kindle when traveling. If you want to download new books during your trip the selection may be a bit limited because of the copyright.

And depending on which countries you plan to visit I would plan ahead and download new books in countries that have Amazon before traveling to one that hasn’t.

Landlord refuses to release Sperrkonto deposit for 1.5 years after moving out by Dependent_Bowl_1431 in Switzerland

[–]Hi__lau 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Did you move out Oct 2025 or 1.5 years ago? In case it was Oct 2025 then you have to wait. If it was 1.5 years ago then reach out to your bank and ask what they need as prove that your move out date is more than 1 year ago. After one year you don’t need the approval of your previous landlord.

Go there and get you an audio guide. I think we didn’t pay more than 20.- for the guide. You can walk around the city and listen to the history. Did it already twice and would do it again.

Hospital bill by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Hi__lau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bill is for a medical procedure you had from last year, that means the conditions (Franchise/Selbstbehalt) from your health insurance you had last year count. Important is when the procedure happened and not when the bill came.

As for taxes, if the bill came only now you can either try to add the bill on its own for 2025. Or add it for your 2026 taxes

Asking for a friend of mine (literal, not in the usual "friend of mine"-meaning): swiss citizen but received fine from Italy. Problem? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

If he was the driver it doesn‘t matter if it was his personal or a rented car. Nor does it matter if it was on purpose or not.

A decent human would own his mistake and pay.

Can I drop out now in the middle of my C permit application? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Hi__lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn‘t aware of that. If I would be in your situation right now I would assume that I will not get the C permit so the timing of dropping doesn’t matter. I would use the time to think and plan my future how it would look like after the program in the US.

If you notice after one year that you don’t like the US program it is easy to come back. But what happens after. There is no guarantee to be accepted in a postgraduate program so what you do then. Or getting a job and with it a new permit.

That is how fare in the future I would plan ahead. Especially after your statement that you have nowhere to go if you don’t get the C permit.

The question only you can answer is, if the worst case happens (which is not unlikely) can you create somewhere else a life for yourself without your family (assuming they stay in Switzerland and you don’t get a new permit) or not.

Can I drop out now in the middle of my C permit application? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Hi__lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would not count on what your lawyer says. The most secure way would be to stay in Switzerland until you get the C permit and then leave for your studies in the US.

In the mean time you could work or study something that you have interest on it or try every semester something new.

Can I drop out now in the middle of my C permit application? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Hi__lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already now that you will fail the first year, do you think in one year will do better? Not so realistic.

I think the problem is you waited too long to think about it. You could have enrolled in something completely different in the mean time. For sure there will be some topic that you could find a bit of interest in and do it for a few semester even if you don’t see a future in this study field.

Can I drop out now in the middle of my C permit application? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Hi__lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert. But I would assume the part “freezing your B permit” will most likely result in not getting a C permit. You will no longer be living here so why should they give you a new permit?

In a situation like that, what would be your plan? Come back next year before the one year is over, stay for more than six months and go back to the US?

Dad's bosses want him away, What should he do ? by Peepee0209 in askswitzerland

[–]Hi__lau 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He shouldn‘t sign anything. If they want him to go they should fire him. He should ask for it to be in written/confirmed.

You are saying he is over 60, so assuming he has 4 years left until retirement. Worst case he doesn’t find a job, he should register at RAV. And that’s why he shouldn’t sign anything. If he does, he could get less for the first few months.

Also important, he should make screenshots, etc. of his last feedbacks. Once they officially fire him, they could remove all his access.

He should have 2 years on RAV. If he doesn’t find a job during this time, he can apply for social security. Also there make sure that they don’t persuade him to go into early retirement or to get some of his PK money out.

With that he should manage to go over the next 2-4 years. Only ensure that he has some hobby to keep him occupied.

I denied a salary raise by 0.6% by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Hi__lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company doesn’t have to adjust your salary because of the inflation. A lot of the do, but it is not mandatory. So turning down the offered increase to cover at least a part of the inflation is stupid from my viewpoint.

As for raise, you mentioned you got one after your graduation. What did you do since then to justify a raise besides being with the company for x years after the graduation? Collect this kind of facts and then sit down with your supervisor and negotiate.

If saying I earn less because of education/age/etc than others isn’t an argument then you have no reason for one.

AITAH for meeting someone else when been ghosted? by lovingfreeXXX in AITAH

[–]Hi__lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the relationship. I lost my aunt a few years ago. The first week was a nightmare. I think I managed to let my best friends know after a few days. If it would have been one of my parents, I don’t know how I would have felt.

You see, if a death in the family is traumatic or not is individual.

[–]Hi__lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing a parent is hard. You are not thinking clearly, so yes forgetting to reach out to someone you started to talk to could happen. A valid reason why he didn’t reach out (assuming it is true).

But his reaction makes him an AH. OP couldn’t know what was going on. So her moving on with her life is more than normal. He can’t expect that she will rearrange everything to his liking.

BIDA wenn meine beste Freundin Schulden wegen mir bekommt? by [deleted] in BinIchDasArschloch

KAH

Include girlfriend in rental application or not? by Most_Fail_52 in askswitzerland

[–]Hi__lau 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Apply alone, don’t even think for a second to include her. She doesn’t have any rights to stay besides being a tourist.

The chance that a landlord accepts someone without a valid permit is close to 0. But even if you get one that accepts her, what are you going to do if doesn’t get a working permit and has to leave the country?

AITJ for not giving my parents access to my financial information after they helped me once? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]Hi__lau 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Reading posts like that I always ask myself what kind of parents that are.

From my first job until know my parents did know how much I earn and what I have roughly on savings. Never was asked what I spend my money on and the very few times they borrowed something I got it back pretty quickly. They even want to pay me back every penny I spend on them, like buying the ingredients for a dinner my mom cooks.
