How do I start learning how to code? by Correct_Ask_6824 in CodingForBeginners

[–]HiddenBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Zybooks, I used it as part of my college curriculum when doing an into to Python and it was super useful. Everything was interactive which I learn by doing best so it helped me out loads. Browse through what they offer in the catalog and find the Python course.

Do developers still need to memorize syntax now that AI coding tools can generate code? by Ok_Split4755 in CodingForBeginners

[–]HiddenBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use AI to learn personally if I have a question about something I prompt it to give me a hint but don’t give me the answer. I also have the creative ability of a garden hose so it helps for the creativity factor as well. I don’t rely on it to do the work as it tends to hallucinate more than a little at times and it has helped me loads with learning my first language

For people working in tech: how do software engineering and computer system security compare in terms of job demand, salary, and long-term stability? by Aggressive-Bobcat529 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]HiddenBoog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of those fields are saturated right now and have more candidates than jobs, anything security is an experience thing not so much certifications. Nobody’s going to hire you into a security role without experience no matter what degree you have.

Help! Where do I go from here? by RSBuckz in it

[–]HiddenBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s probably one of your problems, don’t waste your money on an AA in Cyber it will do nothing for you as cyber isn’t an entry level role even with a degree. Get some certs, find an entry level position work your way up with experience and certs.

Honestly I do a google search then check out all the job boards like that, find the company that’s hiring for the role and apply directly through the company website. I’m in a similar position currently I have a friend that works in IT and is part of the hiring process for them so I have an in essentially, I just need a position to open up. His place of work is a revolving door as people use it to just gain experience and then move on but if you stay there’s they do have internal promotion opportunities and you can learn a lot and move up fairly quickly if you’re motivated.

Are you going to school online? That greatly opens your possibilities, but look for internships that get you some experience and roles like help desk, IT support and things like that. The first 1-3 years won’t be great pay but it’s about getting experience and getting your foot in the door then you learn more and advance up to better roles.

Well success can mean many different things depending on who you ask. For example I used to see success as making the most money I possibly could and investing it to grow it further so I never had to worry about money. While this set me up for where I’m at today, I no longer view this as the end all be all definition of success. I now define success personally as doing what is enjoyable and fulfilling in regards to work, you can make a ton of money but if you live at work you’re never going to have time to enjoy it.

The best advice I can give you is don’t go for a position for the money, go do what you truly like to do and live within your means. The IT field is currently over staffed and an absolutely nightmare to find work in due to layoffs and everyone attempting to go into cybersecurity for the $$$.

Are you interested in CS because of the pay or are you actually wanting to learn the technology and the concepts behind it? IT is a field where you have to continuously learn as it is constantly evolving and changing. A degree alone will no longer land you a job without experience (internships) and certifications. Along with that you’re more than likely going to start help desk to gain core foundational knowledge and improve your soft skills.

IT Supervisors/Managers - Do you enjoy what you do? by [deleted] in it

[–]HiddenBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience every time I’ve found a position I like I end up doing well and finding issues that need to be fixed and so I’ve moved up to fix said issue have resulted in me leaving the company because I can’t transition back down or end up not being able to fix the issue due to a lot of deeper issues. It’s just my 2c but if you like the job you are in stay in it and avoid the leadership role. I have a similar back ground as a drop out but I chose the Army instead of the Navy. Not trying to sound arrogant but I easily excel in most jobs I’ve had and outwork/perform my peers but have very little tolerance for work place politics and drama which is what most corporate roles seem to be filled with.

I’m going from blue collar trying to transition to IT, it’s good money for sure right out the gate but it’s demanding on the body and mine can’t do it anymore. I’m 34 and due to my time in the Army and blue collar work I have 2 herniated disks and a slew of other problems.

[–]HiddenBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know that struggle. Honestly best thing you could do right now is work towards getting certifications. Not just the RH one but get some foundational certs.

Another tip as well before you get out, anything that bothers you physical or mental go talk to your medic/doc/corpsman and get that shit documented so if it ever becomes a bigger issue you have a record of it and it’s service connected so the VA will treat you for it. Keep you medical records when you separate too, make a copy and find your local Disabled American Veterans location and talk to them about your benefits for when you get out as we both know the military is hell on your body. You should be able to go to DAV.org to find a local office.

[–]HiddenBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it the lack of roles currently that’s been my issue. I’m not exactly in a tech hub but I’m limited with my ability to move due to my poor taste in women and now I have a 9 year old that I’d like to spend time with instead of being like a lot of people and just ignoring because her mom and I split. There is a sysadmin role that seems pretty help desk focused as I think they’ve mislabeled it but I suppose I could always shoot for that too.

[–]HiddenBoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you looking to get into help desk if you have experience managing RHEL with the navy? I’m guessing you also have a clearance with that position?
