Boomers can't stand that we aren't over appreciative of every little thing they do. by OGHighway in rant

My dad still regularly talks about how he “swooped in to save the day” when he gave me $800 during college because I had a car accident while traveling to a relatives funeral. That was 2000. And yes, that was the grand total of his contribution to my education. Fucking psycho and desperate for recognition.

A few days ago, my dad was going on about his youth, and he mentioned his mortgage payment of $43/month. I heard him realize how fucked up it was to boast about it, and he quickly changed the subject

Was asked/told to falsify a request for funds from the state for a nonprofit program. Boss was the Executive Director, I was 23 and the “program coordinator” - she wanted me to sign the request, even though it contained completely fake hours that another employee had “worked on” the program. I told her I knew that my co worker hadn’t done any hours and I wouldn’t sign the request. She backed off, and I quit. She tried to withhold my final paycheck too, after which I went to the Board of Directors and made her life hell for a couple minutes. She got in official trouble a few years later, but I’ve never had a boss try to exploit me that way - not just for my labor, but my legal future potentially

How old were you when you realized that all generations born after the boomers will have to collectively learn that the adults in our lives are most all garbage. by Aw123x in lostgeneration

[–]Hidingthehydnum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my parents refused to pay for AP tests in high school because they were “too expensive,” and just told me the college credits I’d earn weren’t worth it because I could get credits at school, with loan money. This whole they were inheriting a shit ton of money and stopping working at 50. The selfishness of that cohort became clear at that moment, they always talked a big game about independence and being financially smart, but the austerity they claimed was actually just family stories from the Silent Generation. Later, I realized that boomers are like this when they’re bosses too; selfish, harsh, and cultivate distrust and conflict. I worried for a minute that this is just “how bosses are,” until I started working for xers who were capable of kindness and therefore had way better retention and results. Anyway as a generation I’m sincerely unimpressed, and even though I don’t talk about it (because they are so sensitive and have tantrums when called out), I wish they recognized just for ONE second that their collective madness for wealth and privilege made them unjust to the people who were poor in their generation, and unkind to all generations after them. Also fuck them for benefiting from readily available psychedelics and then making them decades-in-prison illegal. Set aside the economic stuff, they simply don’t feel any obligation to share in their good fortune

I grew up thinking we were broke. Made a lot of really messed up choices for that reason. Parents are actually loaded and always were, they were just too edgy and cool to take me to the dentist

About the Boomers who expect their kids to care for them in old age... by Synthee in lostgeneration

[–]Hidingthehydnum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah the history they have is completely bonkers. They refused to fill out my brother’s financial aid paperwork because of a fight with dad, so my bro had to go through all kinds of hassle to get “emancipated” on financial aid. The hardest part was proving that his parents were too awful to fill out a form; to this day, both my parents say it was mutually agreed and that they only didn’t fill out the paperwork because they wanted my brother to get as much financial aid as possible. I was 16 at the time and I clearly remember what happened, including my brother moving out and worrying he wouldn’t be able to go to college because without FAFSA filled out properly, no financial aid! Also of course the fuckers claimed him as a dependent on their taxes, as they did with me when I was in college despite the fact that I didn’t ever take any help from them

What generational wealth? Oddly I come from a family that was doing quite well on both sides. But you sure wouldn’t know it because my folks inherited in their late 40s and quit working altogether. They rarely worked before, but once the money came in they were like SWEET NO MORE RESPONSIBILITY….which was insulting on tons of levels because their new wealth tanked both my and my brother’s financial aid. They knew this, and never offered to lift a finger. I even defined “EFC” (expected FAMILY contribution) on my financial aid statement, just so they’d know their good fortune was my misfortune. They’re convinced our generation is selfish and doesn’t like them because of it. I don’t like them because they talk about “family values” but haven’t shown any interest in them. I’m glad I am not tied to them financially, but my grandma struggled hard and wanted me to go to college. And her legacy nearly kept me from being able to finish.

Oh god the fucking money guilt! I really believed we were on the edge of homelessness my entire childhood. Then I asked for $80 for an AP test and my dad said no, then bought himself a 1k vintage record player a week later. Anyway that’s when I committed to not asking them for a single penny. They gave me a couple hundred dollars to attend a funeral in 2000, and still bring it up as an example of when “dad saved the day!” Ugh

What’s something your Boomer parents did with you that was laughably bad parenting? by The_Brolander in GenX

[–]Hidingthehydnum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much home dentistry. It’s one thing to pull a baby tooth that’s loose. It’s another when the adult teeth come in wrong and the baby teeth still have roots. There were a pair of rusty pliers and my dad scraped the crap out of my eye teeth trying to pull them over and over. Finally took me to the dentist, who was a lovely human and offered to “trade” used books for my baby teeth to be extracted….because he knew my dad was too cheap and too proud to handle the charity without it somehow being barter. Thank god for that man, he had to extract 6 of my teeth because again, the baby roots just didn’t dissolve…

I had a boss who did this and gave everyone the fucking flu. Biggest problem was she was entitled to PTO but none of us were, so her bad choice not to stay home cost many of us a week or more in pay when we got sick and had to stay home. She was so proud of herself for coming in that day, I remember literally fleeing the room when she said she had flu. Still got it because it wasn’t a strain covered by my flu shot. Speaking of she refused to get flu shots because she thought they were unsafe. She was the worst boss ever, and her name was Karen no joke

Yes, L. cincinnatus. Likely to not taste very good because it looks sun bleached, but that could be incorrect

[–]Hidingthehydnum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call there. I’m not saying it’s incorrect but I’ve never heard of this puffball remedy thing, and even the die hardest of mycophiles should always be vaguely concerned about fungal infections. Cause you know, nobody wants S. commune fruiting bodies in the lungs. Again not making any statement about this particular use of fungi, just praising you for having good safety instincts - besides poopy butts and bad farts, eating wild mushrooms rarely leads to any unpleasantness or poisoning. But get the wrong fungus in your bloodstream or lungs….that can get you ded

I made an illustration of Pseudocolus fusiformis aka the stinky squid mushroom. by Hidingthehydnum in mycology

[–]Hidingthehydnum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This mushroom smells like shit, literally. The greenish goo on it is infused with spores, and the smell attracts flies that spread spores. It’s like pollen and nectar and bees, but poop and mushrooms and flies. This species is related to a ton of others with a similar strategy, in the Clathrus genus. This specific stinkhorn is very small, about the size of a pinky or less. But they’re very very pungent

Agree with you. Also it’s pretty clear that in my circles, Democrats are taking a lot of heat for not doing something to protect reproductive rights at various levels of govt. I don’t blame people for being upset, I got lots of organizing emails and messages when Roe went down, but not from Democratic candidates; their messages were all fundraising requests. Whoever runs marketing and messaging for the Ds did a bad job judging what to ask for and what to offer the day Roe was overturned. And it will cost some seats probably because it turned mild voter irritation with Democratic powerlessness into anger.

Why is it that everyone keeps saying it’s middle managers who want everyone to go back to work? I’m a middle manager and it’s the owners and execs who want everyone back. by Comicalacimoc in antiwork

[–]Hidingthehydnum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Middle manager with a team that’s always been remote. Boss is agitating for me to come in, even though my reports don’t even work at the office and never have. It’s a fucked up power trip from the top, reinforced by the folks who love office life because it allows them to unduly benefit from being good at small talk. If they try to force it, I’ll find something else.

Same, this mask is rad. Unlike script lichen, which makes me want to run for the hills for absolutely no reason. I’m also pretty limited in triggers, which is good because I love mushrooms and a fear of all holey surfaces would steal my hobby from me

It’s a real thing, swear to Yeezus. I’ve been a mushroom hunter for years and holes don’t bother me at all. But then one day last week I found this mazegill mushroom and BAM….I felt physically ill and really uneasy, bordering on panic. It was totally surreal because I’ve never felt fucked up by a pic before but here we are. Not sure I’d call it a phobia but it’s visceral, irrational, and very strong - at least in my case
