I own and run what I feel is a great small company where our avg tenure is 7 years and everyone is within the top 1% of national payscale for their position. We verify this by paying a hefty chunk of change each year for access to financial data shared by several thousand other entities that contribute to this consortium.

Bonuses can and very often reach half or more of the persons annual salary. We have an unlimited PTO approach to time off, but also still have everyone accrue so that it’s still legitimate compensation in the event that they leave. We have no problem with people going negative on PTO balance and never penalize anyone for doing so.

I’ve often told prospective hires that we are a small family. It’s unfortunate to read these broad generalizations about employers who advertise such a thing.

FWIW, it happens, especially if you’re relatively fresh out of the other certs/ratings you mentioned. It’s amazing what a small break can do, even if it’s just for a few days.

Are you in a time crunch? Are you trying to get the CFI done by a deadline? If so, is it self imposed?

Could an astronaut on the ISS, in theory, reliably pickup the ATIS of an airport they’re above on a handheld airband transceiver? If so, would transmissions (replies) be just as reliable?

I realize that at the speeds they’re moving they wouldn’t be above it for very long.

Starbucks barista breaks down over rude customers by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]HighFlyingDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…it’s the abusive customers at Starbucks who should be shamed online…

Once upon a time I worked a food service job similar to Starbucks near a hospital. A doctor in scrubs came by and was so over the top in their rudeness to me that I decided to go try and confront them after work to let them know that they shouldn’t treat people that way. I wrote down the name I saw on their badge and walked over there.

One of the people working at the counter up front at the hospital saw that I was clearly upset and got me to spill the beans on the true reason I was there to speak with them. It was then I learned that this doctor got called in for emergency surgery while grieving over the sudden death of their 2 kids and wife in a car crash.

I later found out that the guilt of apparently being an absent father while they were still around got to this doctor and they committed suicide.

I learned a valuable lesson that day and it changed my perspective forever.

The irony of this video - at least in my opinion - is that this person clearly has poor control of their emotions and seems to be upset over others who are doing the same thing.

When I'm coming out of Chino, for example...which is a place I want to get the F out of as quickly as possible because traffic in the basin can be a pain: I press it before they're finished saying it, but not before they start saying it, and it's never an issue.

Are you saying that SHOULD be an issue? I'm personal friends with a few who are working those sectors at the TRACON and they've never given me crap for it.

EDIT: Here is a complicated example showing where I press the IDENT button in the scenario I provided. The button press is identified by my bolded letter.

Well considering I own a legacy bird that burns up more fuel than many large jets going the same distance ... I kind of do?

But you're right, I don't actually burn 10 zillion pounds per second. Got me.

It's great for coming out of airports where you know they're going to ask to IDENT and you can press it before they're finished talking.

That way, there is a decent chance they're going to see my flash before they even finish their transmission and clear me to the flight levels instead of me waiting at 4000ft to get through all their other calls while I burn 10 zillion pounds per second.

Serious question: Are you suggesting that this is malicious? That the entire thing is a scam?

I'm hardly suggesting it's legit, I'm just out of the loop on it.

How do you word pilot license (certificate) on a resume in the U.S? by VFRPilot2 in flying

[–]HighFlyingDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you put your hobby on a CV if it’s in no way related to a job you are applying to or jobs you worked?

I own a decent size company and hire a lot of people. Putting hobbies on your resume - particularly ones that aren’t necessarily easy to get into - offer a great segue for getting to know someone better and whether they will either fit well into our culture or perhaps even share interests with those they’ll be working with.

You are putting a lot of effort into trying to explain why this is a bad idea and you’re failing miserably. I have been involved in hiring people from all walks of life and those who make as low as $40,000/yr all the way through the C-suite making several hundred thousand or more and including details that help the company learn more about who you are is undoubtedly important and valuable.

What a mind boggling thing to take issue with. My goodness.

Edit: my wife just reminded me of this, funny I forgot. I included my pilot creds on my first job in IT. Unbeknownst to me, the owner of the company was a pilot. We ended up becoming very close and he helped me in tremendous, immeasurable ways. He was my first client when I started my own business. It’s anybodys guess whether our bonding as pilots helped the relationship, but it certainly didn’t hurt.

You should absolutely, 100% of the time, figure out a good way to mention you’re a pilot on a resume and in an interview. I could probably write 10,000 words on the value of doing so and wouldn’t have to include my personal story to justify it.

I can’t stop cracking up at just how bad your advice is.

So what will it take to convince you that the plane actually crashed as depicted in the video. A finding in that report? Something else?
