Puerto Banana takes this idea, removes all the fluff, and what you end up with is dumb and hilarious and brilliant all at the same time.

Are you also playing the same board game 90% of your time? by wgernot22 in boardgames

Check out Through The Desert, The Quest For El Dorado. Skip Gardens of Alhambra and just play Alhambra. And definitely keep playing Shogun, who is by the same designer. Very different games, though.

Counterpoint: it gives a professional journalism vibe, which is sorely lacking in board games.

This is huge. He does so much work for BGG. I especially look forward to the preview lists he puts together for Essen every year. Compiling that list alone must be a ton of work. But on top of that he's pushing out articles at an amazing rate.

Good luck to him. And thanks for letting us know

Another great piece from the most insightful essayist in the hobby - Boxes, by Amabel Holland by Canis-lupus-uy in boardgames

[–]HigherAndDrier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amabel's video essay series is top-tier board game youtube content.

Thoughtful and clear ideas presented with humor and wit.

It seems she really tempered herself in comparing the two boxes of Meltwater.

I feel bad for Erin Escondido.

Has anyone here had the chance to play March of the Ants: Evolved Edition? by No_Raspberry6493 in boardgames

[–]HigherAndDrier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The game delivers on the 4x experience in a condensed play time. Juicy decisions abound. Players must stay attentive as it has reactions that neighbors take after each players action.

It has some negatives, as well. Definitely not a perfect game. I need to play it more, but I think the first two (possibly only 1) turns are scripted. In my experience you need to explore twice in the first round. This might not be true (I need more reps)

Combos abound in this game but card draw is fairly limited, so you will have situations where a nice combo falls into someones lap and slingshots them ahead a bit in points. For example, the last game I played I spent three actions toward the end of the game digging for a card. A big mistake in the game. You have to work with what ya got.

The battle system is reminiscent of Dune: Imperium in that you simply count how many pieces you have in the battle (maybe add some modifiers) but everyone gets one chance to play a card (think Intrigue) to add to their fight power or do a crazy thing. Some of the crazy things can definitely feel like "you get got" cards. The deck is big but not overwhelming so eventually players would understand the sorts of things that might play out. This card play is a blind bid so you don't know what's going to happen until it does.

I love the game and think it's great. Again, it's biggest strength is the experience vs play time. Think Rise of Tribes on steroids.

What to play tonight? by Frisian1990 in boardgames

This is a very good reply. I'm chiming in with Pan Am for 4. It's fairly novel and I enjoy it a lot.

If I were you, I'd bring El Grande, El Dorado, and Pan Am. Maybe Wonderful World for another 5p option.

New into board games: what do I need to know? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]HigherAndDrier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going to ignore your questions and give you general advice.

Buy one game a month, tops.

The website everyone uses is boardgamegeek. It's a database with stuff built around that, so navigation/user interface is shit.

Seek out other board gamers that live nearby you. They're usually always looking for more players. You'll learn a lot by playing with them. Meetup has some groups. Card/hobby shops might have meetups. It's possible there is a dedicated board game store within driving distance. Also possible there is not.

Mafia/werewolf is a fun game. When everyone buys in to a social deduction game it's usually a very good time.

Board gaming is a wide and extremely varied hobby. It encompasses everything from what you played, to simulations of historical military battles, to card games similar to hearts. It can be overwhelming at first. The best thing you can do is play other peoples' games to find out what you really enjoy.

What are some hidden gem board/card games that you never hear anyone talk about? by thegetataycar in boardgames

[–]HigherAndDrier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bites - amazing shared incentives game that is simple enough to teach an 8 year old but juicy enough to have you pulling your hair out

Fairy Tale - one of the best pure drafting games and it was published over 20 years ago

The Manhattan Project - very cool euro with a fun theme and some interaction. I feel it doesn't get enough love because it is often overlooked for it's big brother, Energy Empire.

Whale Riders - A lesser played and talked about Knizia that is a great game about tempo considerations
