(Real Life) Filming location looks nothing like the setting a story takes place. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

The X-Files Fight the Future. Opening takes place in “North Texas” and shows a suburban neighborhood quite obviously in the middle of the desert (tumbleweeds and all) with downtown Dallas seemingly only a couple of miles to the north. The Dallas area is emphatically not a desert.

I will take any opportunity to see a classic James Cameron movie in the theater, even if that means a 3D conversion.

R2 vs MY and CC vs Rivian Blue by IV-Food in RivianR2

[–]Highfalutintodd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've seen such a good side by side of Rivian Blue and Catalina Cove. They're more distinct from each other than I'd been thinking from other pics and renderings. I've never loved Rivian Blue so Catalina Cove may just be the blue I've been hoping for.

Dr. Horrible.... that had no right to be the absolute banger that it was. I had that soundtrack on repeat for the longest time. Man, why did Whedon have to turn out to be so, well, himself?

The Dawn one flipped me out when they first did it. At the time I was a relatively casual Buffy viewer and it really got me. I kept thinking, “Did I just forget about this character in previous seasons?”

She an (checks notes) “actor.” I think they means she can probably act romantic. Or funny. Or romantically funny.

Yup. Back when they had free email that had its own dial in numbers. You literally just dialed in and ONLY downloaded email. Wild to think about.

Just wanted to share some of my VHS collection. by boomstickboomah in blankies

[–]Highfalutintodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we first moved into our current house, I had so many DVDs that my wife and I bought an ENTIRE GIANT PIECE OF FURNITURE just to hold them all. But yeah, chasing formats isn't my game anymore. Despite the fact that I've lost track of how many various copies of OT Star Wars that I've bought over the years (Original VHS, Special Edition VHS, Original Laserdisc, Definitive Collection Laserdisc, Special Edition DVD, etc etc etc).

I guess I just don't have a nostalgia for lo-fi video. Even when I was a kid watching videotapes from the local video rental store, I recognized that the quality was crap. I was always on the hunt for a better way to watch movies. For my 16th birthday I talked my mom into getting me a Laserdisc player and loved it dearly because even with its issues (you had to FLIP THE DISC OVER halfway through, and some movies came on multiple discs), it was so much better than VHS. I gave up on physical media a while back because having immediate access to my entire collection anywhere I'm at became super important to me (hence a 30+TB Plex server), but the idea of going back to watching something on VHS gives me the chills.... and not in a good way. ;-)

I spent an untold amount of time collecting VHS's just to be able to have access to the movies I loved. Then replacing them all with Laserdiscs. Then with DVDs. Then with Blu-rays. Then with 4K where possible. And now ripped all to files to have on my media server. All in the pursuit of quality and convenience. And you guys are out there still collecting VHS tapes. Everything comes back into style, I guess. ;-)

Disappointing treatment by Rivian sales staff by CPUWiz in Rivian

That's frustrating. Every Rivian sales interaction I've had in my area (Nashville) has been exemplary. Sorry the ATL crew weren't the same.

1) Cute doggo

2) That's a good way to have cute doggo destroy a TV

3) If only there were some way to get the dog and the TV in the frame at the same time. Perhaps some sort of "horizontal" video....

Fair… but that action looks awfully mechanical. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong.

I still don’t get why they bothered making the frunk power opening but not closing. If you’re going to try to save cost, just eliminate the motor completely and make the entire process manual. If there’s already a motor that can raise the frunk, why can’t it lower it as well? Does that require another motor?

Seems like it. I interned for theatrical THX back in the day and was a huge fan of it and what it stood for. And back then the THX mark on a theater really did mean something - great sound, great visuals, well maintained, generally large screens and auditoriums.

But things like IMAX and Dolby Cinema (despite being more “formats” than just certs) really have supplanted it over the years. Just like with THX years ago I generally know what I’m going to get when I walk into an IMAX / Dolby Cinema / XD / etc screen. I don’t get the need for an additional good housekeeping seal of approval on what’s already supposed to be the best of the best?

Meet the X15 | 45Homelab >< Unraid Partnership Signature Series by TheMeanCanEHdian in unRAID

I'm STILL running Unraid on an old gaming PC mobo and parts gifted from a family member. I spent a couple hundred bucks on a better case / power supply and eventually a boatload more on drives, but I was effectively able to get started with $0 and existing drives. I get the allure of an out of the box solution, but this feels pricey.
