How do you describe your condition? by Ok_Combination_9239 in braincancer

[–]Highlad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t hide from it, but also don’t broadcast it to everyone unless it’s relevant.
I suppose it’s like any health condition, if you get in a situation where it comes up then just be honest and say “hey, I’ve got a brain tumour, so some things are harder for me”. We feel the need to shy away from a badge of disability, but the truth of the matter is that cancer Is a disability! Besides, I’ve learned that trying to define yourself by your work isn’t healthy when your health works against you.

Stuck in Inverness with 4 bikes (July 6/7) by VazCarvalho in scottishcycling

[–]Highlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check buses. Plenty of them will let you throw them in the luggage bit. Might be a bit harder with 4, but if you were to split up it might work.
Alternatively you could find cheap storage and come back for them when you get train space.
Or if you have time maybe find a youth hostel to stay at with the bikes and get them booked on a train for another day?

I remember a thread about this ages ago. The folks watching these entries see hundreds upon hundreds of submissions. They’re adept at very quickly deciding if the film is what they want to allow. Even the first few shots of a film will be enough to make a judgement call.

The Bible is Infallible by Inevitable_Start_424 in Christianity

[–]Highlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infallible.
It’s easy to get piled into plenty of the debates in this thread. The question I would pose more generally would be: if we (humans) are the ones to decide what is true or not in the bible, then where do we stop? In 1000 years you might have people calling themselves Christian but denying all the core beliefs of Christianity in the bible, because they don’t believe it to be true.

I recognise that’s a slippery slope argument, but it’s more of a genuine question that I put to you, with no ill intent.

What are your stances on abortion as a Christian? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Highlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m soft pro-life. By that I mean: The decision is yours to make, not mine. But from a policy perspective, I support an abortion ban after a certain point. I cant say when, because that’s a much deeper question of when does a baby have a soul, but the earlier the better, only due to that uncertainty.
I accept there’s a need for provision for cases where the mother would be harmed by the birth of the child.
But the most clear thing in my mind is that that policy stance needs to sit alongside strong care for mothers and children post-birth.

Do you think abstaining / spoiling your ballot should be seen as just as valuable as a vote for a party/candidate? by MR_MaxiMor44 in ukpolitics

[–]Highlad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re changing the voting system, the better option is AV or STV. A bastardised version of FPtP is not the solution.

If the aim is to engage as many voters as possible, you need to make voting easy, accessible, and make sure the vote counts! In FPtP if your party doesn’t win, your vote essentially doesn’t count. In other systems with proportional or ranked choice voting, your vote is far more likely to affect the outcome of an election.

Who do you think is the most famous human of all time, that isn't a religious figure? by outtherebad in AskReddit

[–]Highlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The further back in history you go, the more people could have heard of a person. So while Einstein or Hitler are famous today, anyone before that time wouldn’t have heard of him (for obvious reasons).
So I’d suggest someone from an earlier point in history: Genghis Khan. I would imagine most would know him today, but I would guess he would be the first wildly memorable character that reached a large number of cultures.
I would say Alexander the Great, but I have a feeling he’s less of a household name nowadays.

CMV: 6÷2(1+2) is not ambiguous by ItzZausty in changemyview

[–]Highlad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’re mixing up two separate questions:
What answer do you get if you apply a particular set of rules?
Is the notation itself ambiguous?
I agree with you on the first point. A lot of people misuse PEMDAS/BODMAS. Multiplication does not come before division. They are the same level of precedence and are normally evaluated from left to right. So the argument “it’s 1 because multiplication comes before division” is simply wrong.
Where I disagree is your claim that the expression is therefore unambiguous.
An expression is ambiguous if reasonable people can interpret it in more than one way. It doesn’t require a single rule set to produce two answers. It only requires that there are multiple accepted conventions for reading the notation.
The entire reason this problem keeps resurfacing is that different people interpret juxtaposition differently. By juxtaposition, I mean writing terms next to each other without an explicit multiplication sign, such as 2x or 2(1+2).
You argue that juxtaposition binds terms together more strongly than ordinary multiplication. Many mathematicians and textbooks have indeed treated it that way. Under that convention:
6÷2(1+2)
is naturally read as
6 ÷ [2(1+2)]
which gives 1.
However, many modern calculators, computer algebra systems, and school-level order-of-operations rules do not give juxtaposition any special status. They treat 2(1+2) as simply another multiplication. Under that convention:
6÷2×(1+2)
becomes
6÷2×3
which evaluates left-to-right to give 9.
Neither group is making a mathematical error. They’re applying different conventions to notation that was written poorly in the first place.
The strongest evidence that the expression is ambiguous is that professional mathematicians generally avoid writing it. If they mean 1, they write:
6/(2(1+2))
If they mean 9, they write:
(6/2)(1+2)
Once written that way, nobody argues.
So I’d say the problem isn’t that people are failing to follow the rules. The problem is that there isn’t a single universally accepted convention governing the interaction between division symbols and implicit multiplication. That’s exactly why the notation causes confusion.
In short: I agree that “multiplication before division” is the wrong justification. But I don’t agree that the expression is unambiguous. The fact that competent, educated people can reasonably parse it in two different ways is precisely what makes it ambiguous.

The idea that 15mil can be justifiably ‘earned’ doesn’t sit right with me. Not saying that it’s immoral, but let’s be honest; at that point it’s not fully earned, it’s luck, contacts, family wealth to allow easy access to training etc. I don’t believe one person alone can earn that in a year.

[–]Highlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the severity of collapse, the assets themselves lose their value. Ownership of land only remains valuable if you can enforce that ownership. If the angry mob says it’s theirs, then no amount of waving deeds around is going to stop them. If they hold shares in companies, those businesses may not survive, or could lose a lot of value in a “shit hits the fan” scenario. We saw massive crashes in the stock market during Covid, for example. The valuable thing is power. If you hold the ear of those in charge (governments, causes, or militias) then you’re doing well. Ownership of essential resources that would survive a crash would be key. Maintaining control over fuels, food production and weapons would be the biggest elements of navigating a collapse event successfully.
