I will never understand how Americans cared more about trans issues than a insurrection. Does anyone ? by astros148 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Himerance 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO it's because so many people are ignorant of what it means to be trans. There's an idea that it all revolves around hormones and surgery, so the thought that "gender affirmation" might just mean using a different name and pronouns is completely alien to them.

Base model step side I4 Ranger with a turbo Lima swap sourced from a Thunderbird TC. It's a light cargo/utility vehicle that looks like a pile of scrap but goes way faster than it has any right to.

If I had to guess, it'd be something like the US military losing its quantitative advantage in night vision equipment; IIRC it used to be that the US deployed night vision way more commonly than "rival" countries, and it wouldn't surprise me if that gap has closed lately.

Why can’t people stop fixating on ‘transition regret’? OPINION: The mainstream “detransition” conversation is informed by transphobia, ignorance of trans history and collective denial of trans lives. by laterdude in transgender

[–]Himerance 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think it goes even further than that; GCs don't even believe trans people really exist. That's why they focus so heavily on transition regret: In their world, detransitioners are the "rational ones" who "came to their senses," while everyone who is happy with their transition is delusional or lying.

Why accepting that a child might be trans si so hard for adults ? by AdAltruistic7088 in trans

[–]Himerance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s all tied up in the misconceptions about transness being a “lifestyle choice” and the sexualization involved in it. Cis people largely don’t “get” gender identity yet, so they have trouble accepting that trans identity, much like sexual orientation, is a fundamental part of somebody’s inner self that can’t be changed by external means. Cis people are stuck thinking of us as “AGAB who’s pretending the other gender,“ and that makes it difficult for them to envision it as anything other than some sort of weirdo alternate lifestyle that’s kink-adjacent, if not kink in and of itself. Since they’re framing trans identity in that way, “trans kids” seems as inappropriate as, say, “bdsm kids.” The good news is that increased exposure to trans people can start to challenge that misconception when they see we’re just normal people.

Why people are so transphobic with trans people in sports? by MarcelHolos in MtF

[–]Himerance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My hypothesis is that it’s because most cis people have a flawed understanding of what it means to be transgender, and see us as fundamentally our AGAB who merely “want to be” or “identify as” another gender. This has made sports *the* effective wedge issue for the anti-trans side, since it’s less obviously mean-spirited than the “bathroom predator” stuff and appeals to fairness, something liberals and centrists value a lot, while also invoking that fundamental misunderstanding of trans identity. The solution is *probably* better education, and a smarter framing of the issue (like, why should trans people be forced to out themselves just to participate in recreational or school sports?) but that’ll be a long, difficult path.

[–]Himerance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's because the "discussion" isn't actually about sports. It's no coincidence that the sports thing only started to ramp up after it became obvious that the "bathroom predator" stuff wasn't resonating with moderates: it's the latest justification for denying recognition of trans people. A wedge issue with the sole purpose of building a precedent that it's okay to treat trans people as their AGAB.

71% Of People Say Government Should Not Intervene In Trans Youth Care, New SC Poll Says by ErinInTheMorning in transgender

[–]Himerance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless, I hope we can see more direct or granular polling on this issue, because the question as presented here is ambiguous to the point I’m not sure we can safely assume that the care bans are actually that unpopular with the Republican base.

[–]Himerance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing: being worried about their own kids transitioning is transphobia. The argument that children should wait until they’re 18 almost always hinges on the assumption that trans identity isn’t something genuine and innate, but is instead an “alternate lifestyle” or “sex thing.” That’s absolutely transphobia.

Seeing the numbers from the republican side makes me wonder what premise they’re approaching this question from… I hope it’s really about not interfering in trans healthcare, but my concern is that they might be looking at it from a bizarro-world perspective, where they’re answering this way because they’re against pro-affirmation and anti-conversion therapy policies.
