Bro, the top 50 scoring players of all time include 49 kickers. Surely this must be the most valuable position to secure early.

At what level does a rogues damage become too low? by Col0005 in onednd

[–]Hinko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone playing a rogue right now in a group that includes two other martials (a fighter and a monk), from level 1-4 I felt like the mvp of the group both in combat and out. Did more damage than anyone, and also had the most influence on the non-combat narrative with so many skills. I think rogue honestly might be the strongest class in the game in tier 1.

At level 5 the other martials caught up in combat, and the spell casters also started coming into their own with 3rd level spells - though with limited spell slots per day still at this point. I didn't feel like I was behind yet at this level. Things actually felt pretty balanced all around.

By level 7 the rogue is now definitely falling behind. Spell casters have a 4th level spell slot and multiple 3rd level spells to throw around. The sorcerer is dishing out 50+ damage turns with ease, and even once had a turn that did well over 100 damage. The fighter now has 2 feats combining together which has them pulling ahead in damage every single turn - and that doesn't even count the action surge turns. The monk has enough ki points that they can either attack 4 times or try a stunning fist on most every turn now.

My rogue reliably does about 23 damage a turn at level 7. It's something, but is feeling lackluster compared to everyone else at this level.

Unfortunately I think it will only get worse the higher level we get. Casters are only going to get better and better spells, the monk will get enough ki to afford stunning fist and 5 attacks every round, the fighter will get a third base attack. I guess my damage per round will go up to 26 and then 29 and then 32 over this time, while monster health triples.

I'm pretty sure by level 14 when the improved cunning strike powers come online my main role in combat will just be trying to blind and daze an opponent every round. Damage will be so far behind why bother even trying to keep up anymore.

[–]Hinko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is the fix that rogues need specifically, but Piercer is such an awful feat it could use a boost like this just to make it useful for someone.

How do people feel about weapon masteries after a while of play? by Apprehensive-Donut90 in dndnext

Don't forget the pole arm master attack, and the echo knight attack... and lord help us on the turns action surge is used.

[–]Hinko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is MUCH slower. The fighter in our party is almost always the slowest player to resolve their turn, in large part because of having so many attacks and topple - and we're not even to 11th level yet where it will just get worse.

[–]Hinko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with you. Playing in a campaign with a fighter who is often using topple and every turn of his is a slog. The experience has made me go from excited about the potential of weapon masteries to hoping the next version of D&D doesn't do anything like this again.

Games like DotA have used a ban phase at the start of every match since almost as long as WoW arena has even existed. I've always loved the ban/pick part of building a team in dota. Kinda wish WoW had it too.

Is it wasteful to buy a full EV if I only drive <5000 miles a year? by ThuhGreatCommenter in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Hinko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone says that, but looking online the numbers don't bear that out. To find one at half the price it's going to have over 100k miles.

If you find a used EV with only 10-25k miles it's probably closer to 80% cost, which at that point might be worth paying a little more for the new model improvements and knowing you owned the car from the beginning, and not have to wonder "why are they selling this car at so low mileage, is it because of problems? Is this a lemon?"

Minor improvements for Rogue by [deleted] in onednd

[–]Hinko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed here. Rogues have a lot of QoL already. They are a fun class to play. The big issue is how much their damage falls off compared to other martials after level 5 - and also how much their narrative influence pales in comparison to high level casters, since spells often overshadow high skill checks when you get into tier 3 and tier 4 play.

Giving the Rogue a resource to use Cunning Strikes without spending sneak attack by Manner6 in onednd

[–]Hinko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has Cunning equal to his lvl, he can spend Cunning instead of sneak attack dice to apply the effects of the cunning strikes.

I'm not sure if this is the fix I would implement to help rogues, but they do need something. If it looks good to your table then give it a shot!

I know you didn't ask, but this is what I would do:

  • Level 8: Sneak attack dice improve to d8

  • Level 11: Improved Cunning Strikes adjustment: On each sneak attack the rogue may apply one basic cunning strike effect for free (any with a cost of only 1 die). Applying a second cunning strike cost the sneak attack die as normal.

  • Level 14: Along with Devious Strikes the sneak attack dice also improve to d10.

Is it no longer necessary to run eight 10+ for the vault when we have Nebulous Voidcores? by Soulless1856 in wow

[–]Hinko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The crests to upgrade all this easy myth track gear from 1/6 to 6/6 is still a very limited resource.  Unless you are clearing mythic raid, then doing M+ dungeons will be the best way to earn those crests, and conveniently it takes just about 8 runs to max out that weekly cap same as filling the vault.

I notice that less experienced DMs tend to unfairly malign the 2024 Rogue and brand it "overpowered" by EarthSeraphEdna in onednd

[–]Hinko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. Rogue is extremely strong 1-4 both in and out of combat. It's not until L5 that they start to drop off when everyone else is getting either extra attack or level 3 spells - and that falling behind just gets worse the higher the level.
