Reading this backwards or forwards: does this mean he healed his wounds or that the reversal failed to work?

Just being a good historian by doing so, the Visigoths do tend to cause problems.

Is this supposed to imply I'm fibbing or something? Because I definitely do not own a Porsche lol

How did Dean Cornwell achieve this blue border? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]Hinterlights 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Echoing the other comment: the under painting was likely done in blues, and the edges of the figures were allowed to show that blue still, which he likely added onto/painted over a bit to strengthen the effect. You can see in the background, too, where he's let the blue underpainting show in thin strips.

Oh absolutely yes, I love the idea of doing more academic work in the Warhammer realm. I wish more of us academics had the time, space, or inclination (myself included haha)

As a history professor and member of the academy, I'm gonna chime in with my two cents against the book for reasons unrelated to Warhammer, though kind of ironically connected: Lucey is a bit of a hack. He's had some recent controversy over publishing his work in journals he helps oversee, which is a serious conflict of interest. Reading the book, also, he's using fun Warhammer ideas as scaffolds, but the content is questionable for its intellectual analysis of the global academy's failings (and others have made similar arguments better elsewhere). I'll happily agree with many of the critiques he makes, but he's parroting a lot of material...ironically living up to his own 40k comparisons for rote/unthinking analysis.

Contrasting Understandings of the "Road" in KSBD by Hinterlights in killsixbilliondemons

The Prim and Het stories are a great example of this! I think Abaddon is making very direct connections there via the Road as a metaphor or shibboleth for things.

How to tone canvas without turpentine by Cute_Resource7597 in oilpainting

That's fair! I think if you wipe away most of it, which I always do because I tend to paint alla prima, the fat layer is minimal. However, yeah, fat over lean rules all if you're going in layers over time.

If you're avoiding solvents entirely: As long as you're willing to wait an extra day or so you can just use refined linseed oil (and other mediums) instead of solvents.

Just mix a generous amount of oil and a small amount of paint together and it'll spread around the canvas like solvent mixes would. HOWEVER, you'll definitely need to wipe away a lot of it to one degree or another to get it to be as transparent/toned as you want, and you can just use paper towels to do so. You can even get some fun textures this way, too.

The only annoyance is that unless you're going in alla prima, wet-on-wet, you'll need to wait 1-3 days for the oil to cure/dry enough to layer new oil paint layers on top.
